  1. Plus: A companion release to Getz/Gilberto '76, Moments in Time features newly discovered music by the Stan Getz Quartet featuring pianist Joanne Brackeen, bassist Clint Houston, and drummer Billy Hart, recorded live in 1976 at the famed San Francisco jazz club Keystone Korner. Captured during a week of performances with the legendary bossa nova innovator João Gilberto, these instrumental recordings document the only time this uniquely adventurous configuration of the Stan Getz Quartet recorded together. This deluxe CD includes a 28-pg booklet with essays by jazz journalist Ted Panken, Steve Getz, band members Joanne Brackeen and Billy Hart, producers Zev Feldman & Todd Barkan, as well as statements from contemporary saxophonists Joshua Redman and Branford Marsalis. Also featured are rare, previously unpublished photos from the archives of acclaimed music photographer Tom Copi. Gracing the cover is the distinctive artwork of Japanese artist/designer Takao Fujioka. 1. Summer Night 2. O Grande Amor 3. Infant Eyes 4. The Cry of the Wild Goose 5. Peace 6. Con Alma 7. Prelude to a Kiss 8. Morning Star
  2. If you liked the Disney version, you may want to compare it to the videotaped version of the original Broadway cast. It's also available on DVD and is quite excellent in its own way and there is a major plot difference since the movie version had to cut out the role of the onstage narrator who also played another important character in the show. And have you checked out "Sweeney Todd"? The Johnny Depp / Tim Burton version is good, but again, there is an original Broadway cast version which is quite good. Angela Lansbury in particular was outstanding (as always). Those are probably the two most accessible Sondheim shows. Johnny Lytle

johnny Lytle was one of my favorite vibraphonists. If you don't have it, you should definitely check him out on this classic and these are a couple of nice releases from later in his career on Muse. I don't know how easy they might be to find today, though.
  4. Jo Jones with Milt Buckner and Jo Jones with George Benson & Jimmy Slyde https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjCg7o1quAQ Archie Shepp with Duke Ellington https://youtu.be/v_aapLbNpbM And a special message from Duke Ellington https://youtu.be/x70cXsq9VmM?t=58m28s
  5. I remember watching this when it first aired. That Christmas special was Mr. Crosby's last and one of his last projects ever. It aired just a couple of months after his passing. I watched it fully expecting the meeting of Bing Crosby and David Bowie in a Christmas special to be some sort of historic mind-blowing kitschy train wreck. I fully expected it would be something all the kids at school would mock the next day. But the big moment came and it wasn't a train wreck. It was actually kind of touching and has become a Christmas classic (all the more impressive given that the story is they had to come up with lyrics for Mr. Bowie to sing on the spur of the moment after he declined to sing "Little Drummer Boy"). Strange, but also not strange because Bing Crosby was, hands down, the best vocal duet partner in the history of recorded music, able to perform comfortably and naturally with any one while still retaining his own personality and unique style.
  6. I was very surprised to hear this news. I was never a huge fan of his music, but I did see him in the mid 1980's on his Glass Spider Tour. It was a very good show. and he was a great showman in addition to being a distinctive vocalist and an astute musician and businessperson. Sad way to start the new year. May he rest in peace.
  7. I got my copy of the Georgie Fame boxed set in the mail today. I had ordered it from Amazon.uk back on Nov. 19, but they were out of stock for a while. With shipping to the US, the 5 disc set came to only $37.51. Not bad. Cheaper than buying it from US Amazon. The packaging is very nice and the enclosed book looks like an actual short book, not just some hastily written liner notes. I'll have to make time to read it soon. I would have wished they had used a larger typeface. Mr. Fame's core fans are likely not youngsters anymore and small print is not a favor to them/us. I could have done without the packet of photos and the poster if that meant they could have added a few pages to the book using a larger font size.
  8. An Amazon Marketplace seller currently has discs 1 - 4 of Mosaic's The Columbia Jazz Piano Moods Sessions in Like New condition for only $26.99. Not a bad price if you're interested in a partial set. https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0013VBNTW/ref=wl_it_of_o_pC_nS_lnk?ie=UTF8&colid=21MLL4Z1HVFCD&coliid=I21220KURF7XK5 An Amazon Marketplace seller currently has discs 1 - 4 of Mosaic's The Columbia Jazz Piano Moods Sessions in Like New condition for only $26.99. 9. The gone and hopefully forgotten Andrew "Dice" Clay
  10. Listening to Vol. 9 of the Charlie Parker Records boxed set. This has the albums El Tigre by Barney Kessel (clearly a needle-drop from a rather scratchy album) and the Var. Artists album, Best Plucking In Town, on which the track "Blues For A Stripper" by Mundell Lowe has an inexplicable major drop in audio volume for several seconds in the middle of it.
  11. If you enjoy holiday music, this one is a real winner:
  12. So far I have listened to two discs from the set. While I don't think the contents of these discs were ripped from vinyl, it appears the audio quality varies greatly depending on the original recordings. I listened to Vol. 10 first, which has Red Norvo's Pretty Is The Only Way To Fly (seemed to have a little occasional distortion which, for a ll I know, may be on the original recording) and Teddy Wilson's On Tour With Teddy Wilson And His Trio (simply horrible audio; I had to quit listening after three tracks it was so bad, but if it was truly a "live" recording, perhaps it was done on some primitive tape device. It never should have been released.). Then I listened to Vol. 4 which has two Art Pepper albums -- both of those sounded perfectly acceptable. Today I went to Half-Price Books to take advantage of their current 20% off sale. I managed to find the Bing Crosby 7 CD Mosaic set in excellent condition for a pretty decent price. The only thing is it has a HPB price sticker on it and I'm a little worried about trying to peel that off without damaging the cover photo of the Mosaic box. Has any one else had to do that and if so, did you manage it successfully? (PS for folks in the SF bay area -- the Berkeley HPB where I got this also had the Anthony Braxton Mosaic set if any one is interested.)
  13. That's interesting -- the above cover reuses the back cover photo from this album:
  14. I forget if this one has been posted already
  15. On his album, Sweet Revenge, John Prine sings "Christmas In Prison". The Original Cast Album of Best Little Whorehouse In Texas includes "Hard Candy Christmas". "Winter Wonderland" is performed by Chet Baker & the Lighthouse All Stars on the album Witch Doctor.
  16. "it Must Be Christmas" written by Gerry Mulligan and Judy Holliday and performed by them on the album Holliday With Mulligan G
  17. This set includes Citizen Kane? That was originally an RKO production, was it not? Warners may own the rights to it now, but it seems a little bit like rewriting history to include it in a "best of" Warner Brothers set.
  18. Didn't Joe Zawinul become a US citizen at some point (perhaps maintaining dual citizenship)? I'm guessing by the time of Weather Report he must have become a US citizen. So would his (or any other "foreign" musician's) musical contributions made after gaining citizenship qualify for this category?'
  19. Versions of Astor Piazzolla's "Adios Nonino" have been recorded by Gary Burton and Phil Woods, that I know of. There are likely other versions.
  20. I would take exception to the line, what Hugh Masakela would later steal for "Grazin' In The Grass". I see no evidence that he "stole" anything. The song is always credited to Philmon Hou. I don't know who that is/was. In the liner notes to his The Best of CD, Mr. Masekela says that the song was a last minute addition to the Promise of A Future album because "Russ Regan, who was then head of Universal Records, felt the album was not long enough."
  21. This arrived in the mail today. I ordered it from Amazon last week when they had it fairly cheap. I expected it to be a chunky kind of boxed set, so this is already better than I expected. The only albums contained in here that I know I already had are Bird Symbols and A Cozy Conception of Carmen. Will have to check out this music after Christmas.
