  1. I spun this one yesterday for Memorial Day: I know I am in a distinct minority in that I happen to like Dave Brubeck's piano playing. I like the way his style evolved over time, yet always remained very personal & identifiable. He made a series of solo piano albums for Telarc towards the end of his career and this was his "What did you do during the way, daddy?" record. The songs he selected had personal meaning for him relating to his WWII experiences. Then on to --
  2. Unfortunately, the man is all but forgotten today, but Stan Getz had a younger brother -- Sidney, aka "Sonny" -- who tried to pursue a career as a jazz trumpet player. He was a pretty good musician, but due to a combination of personal demons and standing in the shadow of his more famous sibling, his career never really took off. There appears to be no recorded legacy of his musicianship, but his playing impressed quite a few people back in the day -- so much so that some one even wrote a song in honor of his musical talent. Perhaps you have heard of "When Sonny Getz Blew".
  3. Nice. I hope you enjoy it. NP:
  4. For me, they were the ultimate "girl group" in style, sound and substance.
  5. I've always really liked this album -- some good original pieces on it, in various moods. Geez, it's been around for 26 years now!
  6. I just recalled this brief, shining moment when two favorites -- Little Richard and MST3K -- crossed paths . . .
  7. Here's an Anita O'Day radio spot for Dr. Pepper:
  8. This would be my one disc recommendation for "classic" Charles Brown but there is also an excellent 5 disc JSP boxed set that should still be around Of his later, comeback period albums, I might recommend this one
  9. I bought this CD mainly for the rare Christmas album tracks and it is worth it for that alone. The other tracks are pretty fun too. If I had owned a jukebox back in the day, I alone would have guaranteed that "Don't You Know Yockomo" would have gone Top 40 because I would have bought up every available copy I could find in order to guarantee that this record would always be on my jukebox. It's the kinda record that needs to be heard on a jukebox. It's sort of like Cab Calloway meets The Dixie Cups. What's not to like?
  10. Discs 1 & 2 of 3. Disc 1 is Oscar Peterson Trio & JATP style music. Disc 2 is all Ellington Orchestra. Was this some sort of touring musical package assembled by Norman Granz? The credits on this release are kind of sketchy. They merely state that this material was recorded in New York, Hollywood and Oakland, CA in June & July 1967. Does that mean then there are (at least) three complete Ellington concerts that have yet to see the light of day? I'm assuming what we hear here is an assembly of what were considered the best selections from the various recorded performances. However, if there is any unreleased Ellington material -- and I can't imagine Norman Granz throwing away any Ellington material whether he planned on using it commercially or not -- left in the vaults, that might be a treasure vein worth exploring. I would buy a complete set of the Ellington band's portions from these (and any other dates they may have recorded) concerts.
  11. No I didn't. Now I'm curious what extras are in the restored version?
