  1. RIP Allen I was going to see him on Sunday in London
  2. I have been buying these as they have been issued. I have only just realised that some early tracks are missing. There are quite a few missing on Box 2. e.g. Broken Busted Blues by Clara Smith There appears to be some discussion about this on the Fremeaux website but of course it is in French and I don't understand the point they are making. I tried google translate but It didn't really help http://www.fremeaux.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=816&Itemid=13 Does anyone know why these tracks are missing.
  3. In my opinion that is very harsh on Someday My Prince Will Come.
  4. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-31061037 OOPS: Just noticed this is already being discussed in the Radio section

    Goodbye Acker

My route into Jazz was initially my father's Humphrey Lyttelton records, quickly followed by Acker and Chris Barber in about 1960. RIP Acker.
  6. Oops, I missed that whole discussion. (Previous post now deleted.) I don't blame you, it has a very unhelpful title.
  7. See this thread
  8. You are looking at the 2 CD set, the complete set is 6 CDs
  9. It's on the fremeaux site now.

  11. Well I could be wrong but I believe they do have the rights to Sun, also to Vee Jay. I don't have definitive information on this but they have been issuing Sun material for many years, you would think someone would have noticed by now. Also some of the Sun and Vee Jay material they are issuing is NOT public domain. e.g. a recent release of Jerry Butler singles of Vee Jay material. I don't have the Rich set but I have a similar Johnny Cash set. The label states that the recordings are licensed from Sun Entertainment Corporation. What they don't have, and got into a lot of trouble for, was Chess.
  12. You are so lucky. The limit here in England is about $22 (including postage). Step over that line and you have to pay VAT, import duty and a "handling charge"
  13. Side issue here... Don't you guys in the States ever have to pay import duty when you get a big package from Japan or Europe?
  14. Shame that the chair creak on "Old Folks" has gone awol.
  15. Lots more coming in January and February including New Conceptions by Sam Rivers and Contrasts by Larry Young http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/search/advanced_1/category_1%2C2%2C3%2C4%2C5%2C7%2C9%2C10%2C23%2C24/formattype_1/keyword_tycj/pagesize_1/sort_datedesc/target_SEARCH/
  16. Today, release day in the UK, amazon.co.uk says 'available in 1-2 months'
  17. I should have "Out To Lunch" in a day or two. Will post my opinion then.
  18. I have just received my copy of Somethin' Else, the only one I ordered. I have to agree with everything erwbol say, it sounds wonderful. I can't imagine why the new take of Autumn Leaves was not issued before. Very similar to the 'old' version but it just misses out on the magical ending that the version we all know has, with Miles alone floating over the rhythm section. Instead Miles plays with Cannon at the end. I suspect they did another take to improve the ending. If you love this album as I do, buy it!
  19. An alternative take of "Autumn Leaves" on "Somethin' Else"!!! Wow Got to hear that. Really wonder why this has not been issued before.
  20. Sounds like this is an earlier release of it based on the reviews. http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Thelonious-Monk-Quartet-Pleyel/dp/B002DIPSKY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1382262136&sr=8-2&keywords=thelonious+monk+paris I would imagine the Blue Note version would be of an improved quality, again based on the reviews.
  21. I am going to ignore the Acker Bilk and Chris Barber records :-) It was actually the English version that only had 5 of the regular 7 tracks but also included one of the tracks from Jazz Giants 56 (why did they do that?). I later bought the missing 2 tracks on an EP. October 1961, I still have it. I was 14.
  22. No idea on the answer to your question. There was a Herbie Handcock session that was lost after they corrected the spelling mistake. Plenty of candidates for the Sexiest Album Cover thread on that hitland website!
  23. This is so sad. Loved his music since the 60s after buying some of the English issues of his Duke LPs on the Vocalian label. Only saw him once, in London in 1984.
  24. I would love to see :-- Blue Mitchell Bring It On Home To Me Sam Rivers New Conception both never issued on CD as far as I am aware. Plus there are others that have no been available for a long time. e.g. The Empty Foxhole
