  1. I have had Reflections for some time now and love it to bits. I also have many of Mal Waldron cds from Prestige (had the lps before too). Loved to listen to them for another view on life.

    its them bloody geeks again
  3. I hate to sound completely ignorant, particularly as a) an English major, and b) one who loves Salinger's writing, but did he pass on? Do you mean did he die? Nope do not think so Andy
  4. dunno I will still have lots of blue notes etc (as long as they do not all rot) and if I am honest when I am there I hope I have learnt to appreciate more of what I have and crave less for what I do not Music wise of course! and yes I am being smarmy but sometimes I miss having the old cds back out and have a delve into nostalgia. Yes sure I have a zillion and one ways to access mp3 etc but sat with a mosaic box or a pile of Sonny Clark cds is my idea of heaven. Spent years building my collection....got 98-99% of what I wanted originally and found new stuff many times over...have I listened to all of it (sssshhh- no I ain't...got years left though) In the future we will probably demand more, instant supplies and there I fear they will have us over the barrell as we crave a copy of a rare Kenny Burrell session and the big boys say - help yourself - download or what ever for $5 and its yours for a year and then its gone.......that is what I fear. As for crappy quality Cds David- I dunno........I had a whole stash of records- some lovely, some even lovelier, some - well they were cheap . Maybe save my old Japanese Blue Notes I do not miss em any more if I am honest. I have the same on cds now save the odd one I never wanted and do not miss it. I do prefer to have a retail cd though as a cdr misses artwork and notes although comes a close second if it ain't on cd yet Quality products in my collection, probably like yours I cherish as I did within my record collection. I treated my Box set of the Other Side of Blue Note from Japan with reverence, same with my Tina Brooks mosaic set but as for the old tatty 70's Blue notes...well I had em but they were not as nice. Its the same with cds in my opinion... I picked up the rare tracks 4 cd japanese blue note thing (along the same line as the box set above but for the 4000 series.......) not as nice? Uhmmm yes and no in different ways Where was I ? Ok ranting maybe The Future mate will mean mega corps getting more of you dough for less foot tappin music thats for sure and it sure has gotta sving man
  5. It is very nice and well worth a reissue ( in of of course my humblest of opinion) Nice selection of different material that I am eternally grateful to have found.
  6. hmmmmmmmmmm
  7. then that would push me to Sonny Rollins but he was born in 1930 wasn't he?
  8. Actually , thinking about it again I would go with Johnny Hodges perhaps...ooooohh now I am being indecisive

  10. I am devastated (and hungry now) Off for more revision
  11. I remember him talking on the radio BBC Radio 3 and he mentioned John Coltrane as his inspiration etc...is that right...do I get the chocolates?
  12. I know we have a youtube thread but saw this and thought it needed special attention Lots of organ stuff here enjoy wallow etc
  13. listened to this again last night and yes I feel it is much more Larry Young than Patton. Did enjoy it though and read references to it in the Sharon Green book . The sound ain't so good on my copy ( 32 jazz) but it still cooks! As a quick test I whipped it out and shoved in the Grant Green His Majesty King Funk from verve with Larry Young and it sounded just like the Iron City combo..... mind you I have been wrong about it for this long (never noticed it before )
  14. Gosh Next thing they might ask for a cuddle (eeewww!) Thin end of the wedge I am afraid Get yer ya yas out...(musically speaking of course!) would be my next request
  15. humbled by praise (with head in virtual 'e' record bin waiting for next challenge!) Actually this is kind of fun.....who is next? I guess I miss the ol days when I used to have records *sniff* and rooting through record collection praying for a new find but this internet stuff sure comes a close second.

  17. I remember the only negative feedback I had was when I was selling LPs via ebay and was shipping to this guy in the states....he sends the money which arrives a few days after the auction (pre pay pal over here) and the day after!!!! posts negative feedback ...WHERE IS MY RECORD etc etc RIP OFF...I responded and advised patience as the record was still in the plane on its way over the pond....he was very humble and apologised and had forgotten I was (like his money was) in the UK! Doh! I always thought (after I got it very wrong at the beginning that Near mint was just that...Mint was visually unplayed/touched...not a blemish, new etc Near mint was just that...not quite..with explanation...no NM- it was then VG... I stopped selling records as it was a little complicated A
  18. It was his Blue Note stuff for me if I remember. Actually never made a big secret of the fact that until about 4-5 years ago that was all the Miles I really listened to. Although now I do have the Prestige sides and Columbia ealrier stuff and some other stuff..........never really done much for me. Certainly never made my foot tap the same way that other stuff from that era did or any other era he played in
  19. Yup both the same, I got the one on the top and the red one (vol 2) . They were my fav books for years.....also got the japanese ones too when I could
  20. Speaking of that Savoy/Denon Jordan, what a great trio drummer Blakey was! Too bad that aren't that many opprtunities to hear him in that context -- Jordan, Monk, Herbie Nichols, Horace Silver, who am I forgetting?
  21. that will teach me to read all the posts without running off downstairs to find the cd.....or thinking We will get you back for that one........grrrrrr
  22. Yet more info from this site about vee jay which confirms the 55/56 date http://hubcap.clemson.edu/~campber/veejay.html 1955 Early in 1955 Ewart Abner became the company’s general manager, formalizing a silent role he had assumed since Vee-Jay’s formation in mid-1953. Around June 1955, Vee-Jay followed Chess and other companies north to the record row on Michigan Avenue, just south of Chicago’s downtown—where mainstream companies and distributors had been gathering since after World War II. Vee-Jay established itself at 2129 S. Michigan. With the move, the company also began handling its own distribution for Chicago and surrounding areas. Vee-Jay recorded a full array of talent during the year—jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, doowop, and gospel. An important addition to the company’s jazz line was Wardell Gray, who unfortunately died at age 34, within months of his first recording session with the label. Other jazz acts—perhaps broadly defined—making their debut on Vee-Jay were Baby Face Willette, Jay McShann, and Big Jay McNeely. Three outstanding additions to the gospel lineup were the Highway QC’s, the Famous Boyer Brothers, and the Staple Singers, the latter who would prove the label’s biggest gospel hitmakers. Two significant vocal groups also signed with the company in 1955, the Dells and the Kool Gents........... Soul-jazz and hard bop pianist/organist Baby Face Willette was born Roosevelt James Willette on September 11, 1933, in Little Rock, Arkansas (though some sources say he was born in New Orleans and raised in Little Rock). His first formative experiences in music were in gospel, where he accompanied gospel singers. His first session was done for Recorded in Hollywood, in 1952; not long afterward, he settled in Chicago. The session he cut for Vee-Jay was his second. His singing and organ playing were supported by a band featuring Red Holloway (tenor), Jon Thomas (piano), Lefty Bates (guitar), Rhodell Fox (bass), and Moses Weedseed (drums). 55-332 Baby Face Willett [sic] Why Vee-Jay 176 Sept 29, 1955 c.
