  1. Been reading this on and off now for 2 days and find it a good read. Could have used some of the internet based anecdotes about Hank with more gusto I think especially around the latter part of his career. Seen much of that on here especially with relation to the last years/the Blue Note concert etcetc However it is a very very interesting read I must say and one which I intend to finish soon
  2. Got my copy through today (used too!) So I will give it a whirl...had a quick glance and found out 2 new things about Hank already so I am keen!
  3. So how else should I have shouted it downstairs without upsetting the family.................'Come up here you guys and see this guy playing with his balls!'

But there were still some gems..already mentioned and some not which are still worth a listen. I take your point but who else was still keeping the message alive and selling?
  5. I note some of these collections are not polished...tut tut! Outragious Get yer marigolds out and give them shelves a dustin!

    George Butler

Hindsight is a wonderful tool. What else could he/they have done at the time? I for one wish he was not credited with the demise of Blue Note and it's jazz content.....could it have been any different considering what was going on at the time?
  7. Will do!
  8. Also picked up their Strata LP Location which I have not ever seen before. Any of you got this one?
  9. The UK Ministry of Defence refused to comment on whether they were thinking of buying up spares of the 1946 model saying that they still prefer to use the ones from the First World War (ie none)
  10. Female, very much so. Which is why it's so funny that gangsta rapper Ice-T's real name is Tracy. I suppose that's the 'T'. Tracy or Tracey (form of Thracius (masculine) or short for Teresa/Theresa (feminine)) also Traci, Tracie----wiki Female with stats to prove it!!...why do they bother to find out Tracy View names similar to Tracy (male, female, anagrams) Population Statistics for Tracy Tracy is primarily a girls' name, but it is used for boys 19.39 percent of the time. 11. They (Scots and Texans) sound very alike...think of George W Bush and Billy Connolly for instance
  12. This a Coen bothers film---of COURSE the joke's on the viewer. I agree: When Moss is taken out, off-camera, it's a huge cheat. The rest of the film was pretty much crap, excepting perhaps the confrontation between Anton and Moss's wife. I know that some people will scream that that's the way the novel goes, but since I never read the novel (and now never intend to) I can only judge it as a movie, and frankly any movie based on a novel has to stand or fall by how it functions as a movie. And one conclusion I've reached about the Coens long ago is that they are incapable of simply making a "good movie"---they can't help playing silly, self-referential, post-modern games. Fucking around, in other words. But they've got two-thirds of a good movie here, which is really great for them. Now I saw this the other evening on my own Liked it in general Bit violent for my liking but that comes with the territory I guess I did like the way in which one of the main characters was killed off screen..that was different..... The ending was messed up really for me but again that is my problem I suppose...too much conversation
  13. Have both and they are truly really nice records and were a surprising find during a Blue Note drought
  14. Had most of the King records and then the Mosaic on LP then cd. Also had the straight 2 cd set. In my opinion I would go for the Mosaic for best overall sound and reliability and what is on offer. The Kings are very very nice...very very expensive and in my opinion not worth the extra for my ears
  15. It would not take up too much room even if they are pdf files (should not at least) If you download all the piccies at gokudo ...they are not that big are they?...Mind you it is not so much effort to go there directly I guess. On the earlier point I have the 2nd version of the discography which is excellent.I would have love an electronic version though but pdf version....hmmm....cannot add notes etc...hmmm
  16. blame Bill Gates....he never dug John Patton...was always a freddie roach head so I heard On a serious note...my browser opened it ( mind you I am trialing the Beta version 3 .4)
  17. No maybe not ...but when I said this is on Blue Note....the label I am nuts about ....and you might also like this...well she was hooked...did not get her into too much but they do have a grant green lp and Blue Train in their house now
  18. Disagree What is more important for me is that she was the first thing with Blue Note on it that I bought both for my Mum! and me She never got in to my taste in Jackie McLean and Grachan Moncur III at the time
  19. I think the post earlier about Blue Note in 2000+ being not like the Blue Note it was reissuing for us resonates with many people...but she didn't half shift a load of cds
  20. that is true nor like it was earlier or even a little later....never really had a fav period Got my stuff on Horace in the fifties and 70's ...same with Lee Morgan and Donald Byrd and and and
  21. hmmm the question is ...would the grey suits and corporate boys have ruined Blue Note despite what they saw after after N Jones success story. ... I will put it another way It was a long time since I bought a New artist release on Blue Note...like since Jimmy Smith and Stanley Turrentine did stuff in the late 80's....no...tell a lie I did get a Charlie Hunter record and the US3 stuff How does that figure I was given some Orphy Robinson which stays unplayed Nothing they have done recently has been of interest ( new stuff new material)
  22. ........and Dianne Reeves from the 80's, L Rawls, While I am on the subject....reminds me how despite a killer opener track ...just how bad Freddie Roach's All that's good was
  23. No but I can think of a whole lot more horrible releases I have heard with a Blue note sticker on and so can you. She is not the most direct link I can think of to Horace Silver ok but then neither were a few other other nice LPs I got rid of ...strings and voices usually are not the largest part of my Blue Note collection.
  24. There was another live Blackbyrds set later here Donald Byrd and the Blackbyrds Paul's Mall Boston, MA probably Summer 1976 FM broadcast > total time 36:38 1 Walkin' In Rhythm 2 Happy Music 3 Do It Fluid 4 Rock Creek Park The earlier set that dumpy mama referred to was this I think Donald Byrd Seven The Jazz Workshop Boston, MA 4 September 1973 WBCN-FM broadcast total time 72:29 1 Kwame (?) 2 Fancy Free 3 The Good Reverend 4 Flight Time Donald Byrd - trumpet Kevin Toney - piano Keith Kilgo - drums Ray Armando - conga David Williams - bass Bernard Perry - guitar Alan Barnes - saxophones, flute
  25. Mind you this is a great idea for a thread.....its like having family over at XMas all over again and having the same old rows
