Copy-blocked CD tops U.S. charts
connoisseur series500 replied to Swinging Swede's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Has anyone considered the angle that if new reissues are copy protected then that will increase the value of what we already own? -
Pretty good health, but I don't think I lead a healthy lifestyle. I'm not overweight, but I don't eat good food; I subsist on 6 hours of sleep each night and have a sedentary white-collar job. My cholesterol level is high, but it's good cholesterol (HDL) so far. Haven't been to the doctor in awhile. Suffer from chronic kidney stones. Am irritable from being tired. Other than that, everything is okay...

I was in Dearborn Music the other day and ran into this reissue. I thought to myself, "WTF???" and jumped on it for $11.97. I played it a couple of times and loved it. Curtis Fuller has some terrific solo space here, as does Mogie. Just came across this thread. Don't know if it would have affected my decision to buy the cd; but I'm glad I did! -

I trade my old versions in for $5 credit and pay $10 for the new RVG. They only cost me $5 net, but then I did have to buy the same thing twice... On balance, I do pay to have the remasterings. Obviously, it must be worthwhile for me. I hope BN remasters everything that needs it. Jackie's "Demon Dance" next please....

Surely, this will drive up the value of the older, non-protected discs... -
"proflicacy?" Other than that, I think you're assessment of Lawrence is right on. He had the propensity to get on his high horse, but he was unbeatable as a stylist. No one was better; not in the 20th century anyway. (I'll have to dig through my boxes to find some good examples, and really bore you guys... ) Think you're correct about my timeline in placing Virginia Woolf before Joyce. I'm not sure whom may have influenced whom, but they were contemporaries. No doubt, however, that Proust came first and influenced everybody. Novel writing is still about stories. Take away that element, and it won't survive. Good writers have to be able to tell stories as well. Faulkner could tell a good yarn. Of course, a good story doesn't make a good novel; but a good novel needs to have a good story as well.

Very true, Chris. I think the coaching staff plays a huge role here. Bill Belichick will have to keep his team focused game by game. He's proven to be kind of good at that.

I came across a lot of funny names while living in Thailand for 11 years. Here's a sampling (none of this is made up:) Thurdsak (pronounced, Terd-sak) Pienpis (actually pronounced "Pee-en-pit," but most foreigners would call her, "pee-n-piss") Potamas (actually pronounced "Pote-a-ma," but my American friend who was her teacher called her "Pott-a-mus." And yes, she was a rare Thai who was overweight... Thurdpis (You guys can figure out the pronunciation here... Fuck (the word for pumpkin in Thai; and yes it is roughly pronounced the way it is in English; sort of between "fuck" and "fack" Sermsak (just missing that critical "P!" Pornsak ("porn" is a common prefix and suffix in Thai names.) My wife's full name is Sasiyaporn. There were a host of others, but I've forgotten after all these years. I left Thailand 9 years ago...

I actually know a Russian in Toledo whose first name is Semen. I don't think it is uncommon at all in Russian.

Obviously, I agree with you, Chris! On paper, the Pats are even stronger than they were last year; and the defense is even better. Watch out league! Still, will the hunger be there? You can have all the players in the world, but if they're happy with their two titles in three years, then they won't win it all. They've got to show me the goods; just as they must for the rest of the league.

Which Faulkner got, in part, from Joyce! And I'd take DUBLINERS over anything that D.H. wrote. So there. Check out DH Lawrence again, David. No one in the first half of the century came near to him. Just look at his essays for a start. "Dubliners" is actually very good; but I don't care for "Ulysses," nor "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man." One could claim that Joyce took his stream of consciousness style from Proust and Virginia Woolf. Writers always borrow from each other. Faulkner could actually tell a good story. Joyce did not achieve that with "Ulysses," I believe.

I wouldn't worry about it, Noj. I doubt that anyone would hold it against you or anyone else for your sports' loyalties. Whaddya think this is, politics????? -

You mean 1984, right? In 1986, the Patriots DID make it to the Super Bowl only to be dispatched 46-10 by an awesome Chicago Bears team. Aw fudge.... I think it was 1976 actually... I don't remember the damned year! -

May I remind you guys of the 1986 playoffs when the Patriots were called for a highly questionable "roughing the passer" penalty while winning the game. The Raiders went on to win the game, and the Super Bowl. You don't hear us Pats fans whining about that kind of garbage. You see, if the Pats were good enough, they would have found a way to win anyway. Same for the Oakland Raiders of 2002. Now stop your whining.... -_-
