  1. Deuce Mcallister fumbles on a 4th and 1 in overtime for the Saints; Carolina takes over and scores a field goal to win the game. I lose my upset pick of the week. I'm now 3-2 for the year. Pats win a tough one. Yeahhhhh! Steelers looking really bad. Cowher's job on the line? Lots of other cool upsets: Bungles beat Seattle and Giants all over Minnesota. Looking forward to the evening game on ESPN.
  2. I thought it was placed there with politics as a means of segregating all the arguments to one corner of the room, hehe.
  3. Upset? Thsi would be an upset? I think this is a tight matchup here. Either team could win. Pittsburgh is only a 1 1/2 pt favorite so it wouldn't be much of an upset if the Rams take it. Still, I realize that there isn't necessarily a "big" upset every week. Sometimes we just have "little" ones.
  4. I understand what Jim Sangrey's talking about. I wouldn't quite use the same words, but that's Jim. Hey Man, there's got to be artisitc integrity. What was that "unpardonable sin" that Nathaniel Hawthorne was talking about in his short story? Well.... I forgot!! But I think it was something about being honest and true to yourself. Your whole life can't be a lie. Jim aint far off in his comments, folks.
  5. I am a member of AAJ but rarely post there. I think Mike Ricci is a swell guy and welcomes everyone. There's just too many people over there: too big a crowd. Here we're all a kind of family, and we do fight from time to time, but I think we've all got much respect for each other. In short, there's a far greater depth to the relationship between members here than at AAJ. With that said, how can you compare?
  6. Okay now what will be the upset special of the week? I have no special "feelings" on anything this week, but you KNOW there will be at least one upset. I'm almost tempted to pick Buffalo over Kansas City. I also think that Carolina might be shocked at New Orleans. One of these two games, friends will be an upset. I cannot really pinpoint it so I also cannot take credit should it happen. I guess I'll go out on a limb and take New Orleans over Carolina as my upset pick of the week. My own team, the Patriots have a dangerous meeting with Cleveland. The Brownies play up or down to the level of their competition. Their offensive line is all shuffled which can't help them very much; but they can be a very explosive team. Still think New England will win, but I am concerned that this might be a "trap" game. I believe the Steelers will beat St. Louis. SS, I'm expecting to hear your upset pick of the week as well. B)
  7. Sorry dude, got to first pay your dues on Vee-Jay or Savoy.
  8. Actually Dan, I'm not sure the poll proves anything. For example, I gritted my teeth and voted for Classic BN, but as I mentioned in an earlier post, I equally love the progressive stuff and really hated being forced to "categorize" my tastes. I also like soul jazz and bossa nova. I like Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown. I like John Coltrane's explorations and the genius of Miles Davis. I mean how do you categorize this stuff? Like many others here, I like all jazz styles though I do favor hard bop. I guess it is tough being forced to choose a particular favorite style in a poll like this because it then forces you to exclude other stuff you really like. I would also have broken down many of the styles, but I know this wouldn't be easy to do. I don't think this poll proves anything, but I do respect your intentions, Dan.
  9. One cd left. BabyFace Willette, "Mo Roc" (Japanese) mini-lp case--price now offered on half.com. Will take trade offers only. Thanks
  10. Definitely the soul-jazz Lou. I don't particularly care for the Bop Lou, though he showed what a master of the alto he really is on those bop sessions. I just think that he really discovered his voice on those soul jazz recordings and he made his historical mark in that setting.
  11. I personally prefer Jackie Mclean to either, though I am not downgrading these two great alto players. It's just that Jackie Mac had that unique sound and I like his more original ways.
  12. Yahhhh! I was hoping Jacknife would choose this one. I take credit for introducing Jacknife to this wonderful session.
  13. It will, Jacknife. I know your tastes pretty well and this cd will grow on you as you keep listening.
  14. Don't laugh but Amway type sales will probably take off now that the new telemarketing laws will destroy a lot of legitimate businesses which had to employ some form of telemarketing. I am going to lose my job as well as a sales agent for a large insurance company, and will have to leave around 400 clients "stranded." One retired gentleman said to me this past week, "What will I do when you leave? You've always watched over my retirement account, and I don't understand that stuff?" I've been in it for almost 8 years; imagine those who just started! The only ones who will survive are those in the business for 25+ years. I predict that other businesses will get hurt as well. Unless you've got a storefront or some kind of business which favors some kind of passive advertising, then it's curtains baby! But getting back to my point...with telemarketing banned and spam to follow, and with door-to-door sales frowned upon, the only other way to market is through the kind of "networking" that Amway endorses. I've never been involved with Amway though I was invited to attend meetings. I suppose many legitimate businesses will now follow the Amway style of prospecting, i.e. networking through friends, neighbors, acquaintances, etc. Yuck! I never prospected amonst friends or family or neighbors. I was always under the impression that if you try to sell to friends then eventually you won't have any. For God's sake, I had to keep my professional life separate from my private life. My life was NOT my job; and I'll be damned if I ever make it so.
  15. Ulp!! You're right Moose. Guess I thought that this was the kind of subject matter that would bring him back.
  16. Hey Kevin, Great to see you back brother!
  17. I got 4 correct. Not bad considering I stopped drinking beer around 20 years ago. Of course, I got Heineken correct. No way I'm missing that one brother! BTW, I'm sure you got the Pabst Blue Ribbon correct, Moose.
  18. up with additions and quoted prices.
  19. This should have been an easy pick for me, because my tastes pretty much favor hard bop from mid-50s to late-60s, the classic BN period. The only problem is that I love a lot of the later Progressive stuff as well. To me, Blue Note was "progressive!" Hate to have to choose between the two selections as one is the gemini face of the other. Grrr, Dan!
  20. Actually, I am aware of that, but I'm tired of paying Dustly $26 for those mini-lps.
  21. I think I get some of this on the song, "Street of Dreams" at the height of Grant Green's solo; but I don't find it overly jarring. Other than that, I don't really notice these sound issues as much. Certainly there is nothing that ruins the session in my opinion. Perhaps it could use a remastering.
