  1. To my knowledge, Freddie doesn't drink or smoke. I am basing this on one of the interviews he gave on the BBC. His eyes were clear so I assume that he was compos mentis during the concert. I've seen the VHS version and not the DVD. Can't wait to see "Recorda Me" and "Appointment to Ghana," both of which were not included on the VHS. Didn't know what to think of Cecil Taylor's performance. Was he randomly pounding? I am not a musician so I cannot know, but it certainly wasn't something I could subject my patient guests to when I played the VHS for them. I've never been a fan of Cecil Taylor but perhaps others on this board are and can support their man as depicted on the video. I thought Jimmy Smith's solo on "Blues Walk" was criminally short. We want to see the great man play!! At the same time, Lou seemed to blow forever on the same song. All of the horns were terrrific on Moanin. I still think Lloyd's performance on "Tone Poem" is the best of all; and I like Pettruchini's contributions as well. Freddie was definitely ON throughout the concert as well. Here's a question: who was notable for their absence? In my opinion, it just isn't the same without a Horace Silver appearance. He had Woody and Joe Henderson there to handle the horn work. I really regret that he wasn't there. Who else should have been there? We could have used some examples of soul jazz and had a Big John Patton led set as well.
  2. I say it's Jim's choice, though I agree with Dan that this could get out of hand. Man, I wish I had a cd burner so I could compile a disc for everyone myself. I'll talk to my brother in law about it. Perhaps he could help me with a burner and teach me the technology down the road. In the meantime, I'll listen to everyone else's favorite obscure music and sit on my hands! Gotta admit though that I have trepidation over Jim's selections. His knowledge of jazz is great and I won't likely be able to recognize a single track. Go easy on us, Jim. Please..... :rsmile:
  3. I just bought this session from ebay and should be receiving it next week. I couldn't resist this session which includes Duke Pearson, Willie Wilson, and Pepper Adams. Perhaps my alltime favorite Duke Pearson session is "Dedication" with the same lineup. In fact, it appears to be the same session only with 5 alternate takes added. What's with that? Anyone know or have this session, and is it worth it just for those extra five takes?
  4. Thanks for the recommendation, Al, but it's only a few bucks more and I assume his order stands early in the backorder qeue. Wouldn't want to start at the back of the line once again. Strange way to deal with a half.com order though.
  5. Although I am known to dally with scatological subjects from time to time, no one can blame me for starting this one. -_- Nuts and milk products are the big methane-producers for my system. Wouldn't get near Kenny's culinary concoction. B)
  6. I suspect my back order is coming from the same place, Matt, even though I ordered through half.com. Not sure what to think about ordering from a seller through half only to discover that he has the cd on backorder himself! Rather strange...
  7. My "score" on half.com has not yet arrived. The seller has informed me that it is on backorder. In another 30 days or whatever, I'll be able to join in on this discussion. -_-
  8. Just want to pipe in my big "thank you" as well Jim. I also urge you to point out when the costs of maintaining this site become burdensome to you. I'm sure we could help out. It's all our neighborhood now and no single person should be left supporting everyone else.
  9. You know, I'm coming around to this viewpoint more and more. My kid is still young enough to get into it a bit, but then I think he just likes having his friends to go out with. It's a silly holiday. Okay Bev, you can have the holiday. We'll trade it for some of your sweet buscuits.
  10. Yeahhh Lions! Watching the Sunday night game right now. I get the feeling that the Pack may steal this one at the end. I think they need the win more. Minnesota's offensive line is terrific. The only line I've seen this year that may be better is Kansas City's. Man it helps to have all that time to throw.
  11. A big NYET to that! No way we're giving up Thanksgiving. That one is a real joy. We'll take back Halloween if you take back Boxing Day; that one is a real snooze!
  12. I have no special upset pick of the week. The matchups are too close to call anything an upset. I'll go with the Pats over Denver on Monday, but I don't think you can call that an "upset." Broncks are only 2 1/2 pt favorites. Right now, New Orleans is taking care of Tampa Bay. Tampa lost twice to them last year. Some kind of jinx going on here.
  13. There's a store here in town, "Waterloo Records" that lets you return any CD for any reason, even if you just don't like the music on it, as long as you have the receipt. For up to a week (or maybe 10 days) after you've bought it. Great store with a great return policy. They also let you listen to any CD in the store before you buy (maybe I should have done that!) That will last until a new owner takes over. There's a store in Ann Arbor that used to do that then the sister sold it to her brother and he cracked down. Can't really blame them, but I barely go there anymore. They raised prices on everything and lowered their buyback prices. It's still a good store, but I just don't make the trip anymore. I think Bol would know what I'm talking about.
  14. Rained pretty much spoiled ours. We went around soaking wet for a while then gave it up. went home to help my wife hand out candy. The weather cleared and we started getting piles of people. Same story of vans dropping off kids and such. We ran out of candy at 7:40 and I just turned off the lights. We had a very large turnout afterall. Can understand Chuck's actions. I'll probably do the same sometime, but my kid is still into it. Many people on our street turn out the lights and I would say only 50% of the houses were lit. Although one can complain that Halloween has become so commercialized as everything else, it's still refreshing to see that people still have the freedom to turn off their lights and opt out if they so desire.
  15. "Prisoner" is probably Herbie's worst BN session. It's still worth keeping in my opinion but the music meanders way too much without enough direction. Good personnel. Still worth keeping.
  16. Happy Birthday, Claude! :rsmile:
  17. Thanks for your nice comments everybody. Got off work today and knew that I had to get a "thank you" card. Didn't have much time before Halloween started so I figured I would combine the need to get my kid some touchups to his costume and the need to get a card. Hit the local Kmart and couldn't find a single "thank you" card. All birthday stuff. Well at least I got my kid his costume. Made it home just in time to take him around the neighborhood in the rain. In the meantime, I've still got to get a card. The professor who donated the money, was a teacher of mine back in 1978-9. We've kept in touch over the years and talk about once every three months. We spoke only last week and he never said a thing about this. The sly dog....
  18. I can see your wife carries the level head in the family. Thank God she put her foot down on that one!
  19. No Rosa Luxembourg costume? Sorry Alex, dumb joke. Happy Halloween to you and your family.
  20. Catesta's portfolio is full of this stuff! paging....
  21. Felt it wasn't appropriate to quote my real name on the letter.
  22. Thanks Dave. I actually felt bad about posting something so personal. I tried to find a way to delete the post but couldn't figure it out. This really is a personal post. Right now, I feel humbled....grateful....full of vanity.
  23. This evening I got back late from work and got this letter from Bowling Green State University, my alma mater. Sincerely, XXXXXX Man, I been walking on air all night long! I've got good friends! Wow!!! :rsmile: Nice thing to come home to.
  24. Let's hear it: who has kids and who dresses up on Halloween? I've got an 11 year old and I've got as much Halloween spirit as he does. I take him around with a bunch of his friends and I have this cool mask of an ugly cyclops. It scares women into dropping their entire candy bowl into my entourage's super-sized bags.
  25. Update: Deepdiscount now has it on backorder. Expected arrival date is November 6th.
