  1. I have to make a rare dissent with Soul stream regarding Don Wilkerson. I did not get into his Blue Notes at all. Thought the music didn't have enough "meat." Not my cup of tea, Al; but then I think your tastes are very different from mine.
  2. love that avatar, Couw, hehe
  3. Thanks for the info TJazz. I'm gonna get it.
  4. Great idea! Grand "fucking" Rapids is only 4 hours from where I live.
  5. I didn't buy a jazz album until I was around 18 or 19, but the seeds were planted early. My father had a mixed assortment of records and listened to a variety of stuff from Louis Armstrong to Louis Prima to Stan Getz to mainstream pop. He was never passionate about any kind of music, but I loved Getz' Latin bossa nova rhythms. My jazz purchases started for good in my 30s but that was due to circumstances. I was living in a foreign country and music didn't play a large role in my life at the time. When I listen to Stan Getz, it feels as if this music has been a part of my life ever since I reached the age of consciousness. I voted for "before 20" though my mass purchases started in my 30s.
  6. No one has mentioned Tina Brooks, "Street Singer." It's available only on TOJC. I haven't yet listened to it closely enough as it joins the big pile of stuff I've got to hear at some point. One day I'll get through my own collection!
  7. I can't speak for "Baby Grand" cause I don't have it, but "Root Down" is good as you say. I really love "Master" and "Master II." Two of my favorite Jimmy Smith discs.
  8. Charles XII was such a warrior. All he did was fight wars. Not surprised he would have messed up his country. Don't know too much about Charles XI; not as colorful right? Yes, I meant Charles V and Phillip II. Been a while since I read my books. Charles V was also Holy Roman Empire and was the most powerful monarch of his time and one of the most powerful kings ever. Philip II had some vague alliances with Elizabeth I of England: rumors of marriage and such. He basically ruined the Spanish empire (along with his father) through incessant warfare. They financed their wars through New World gold and never built any institutions or anything that would endure. They were too busy fighting their religious wars. These folks are interesting to read about because they had so much power. Did any of them rule "right?" Probably few did, but they are interesting nevertheless.
  9. Yeah, it was Henry II, the "good friend" of Thomas Beckett
  10. Thanks Jim for the compilation. I don't really have anything to add especially since I couldn't identify a single artist, though I was the first to correctly identify the tune on #6 (yuck, yuck!) As far as buying any of the sessions: I might get that Guaraldi. I was impressed with that one; and I'll listen to the others again. Thanks.
  11. Actually, "minor Move" is my least preferred of the three! I would definitely pick up the other two as well.
  12. I haven't heard it but I like Larry Willis' stuff on Steeplechase and elsewhere. I've got, I think about four of his cds and like them all.
  13. Great news fellahs! I've been off the board all day and didn't catch it on time. Not sure if we get his show here in the Toledo area.
  14. Dr. Martin Luther King was one of the greatest Americans. Hard to surpass him. Other favorite kings: Charles XII of Sweden, the one who attacked Russia and was defeated in Poltava. Henry II was one of England's greatest kings. One of the Plantagenets. Or was it Henry III? Can't remember any more. Charles II and Phillip (his son--forgot his number!) ruled Spain at its height. Louis IV, Sun King of France. One of the world's most powerful monarchs ever. King Gezo of Dahomey. Built his "palace" on the skulls and bones of his slaves and defeated enemies. (No, he's not a favorite -_- ) King Henri Christophe of Haiti: first self-pronounced king of Haiti who started his own court of royals and built his palace Sans Souci and an impregnable citadel. He lived in mortal fear of betrayals and killed himself, as the legend goes, by a silver bullet.
  15. Count me as another who isn't interested in beer. I stopped drinking years ago though I had a couple of brews when Organissimo turned up at Ann Arbor. I don't dislike beer at all; in fact, I like it but don't feel it necessary to have any...ever, if that makes any sense. As I get older, however, I sometimes pause at the beer section of the supermarket and wonder if I should shell out $6 and indulge myself on a good imported 6-pack. Can't vote here because I don't believe I have ever had any of this fermented sassafrass! I'm just not a drinker.
  16. Did you feel the urge to take your shirt off? Yeah, and I hope you didn't do the old lampshade routine.
  17. All the best man! One of the funnier cats on this board.
  18. Beautiful review, Jim S. Agree all the way!
  19. Thanks Big Al, I wuz wondering why it was taking so long myself!
  20. I certainly won't argue against this position, Chuck, but I guess I take a more laissez-faire attitude towards what people post. The horrible image contained here, however, continues to linger in my mind. My preference is to support Chuck. We could do without this stuff. View the board as a pleasant place to interact with humourous and intelligent and decent friends.
  21. I'm still trying to get into this session. It doesn't hit me as a great thing to listen to, but at the same time there are hints that I should be giving it a closer listen. Still working at it...
  22. What about the tar-and-feather ritual? Surely we haven't given that up????
  23. Hmm, gruesome stuff. Thanks for giving us the choice first. Of course curiosity always wins out. Can you guys imagine what it must be like for the person with the job of cleaning up the bodies? (shiver)
  24. In Thailand they call it "krating daeng" (literally, red bull!) The truck drivers and taxi drivers drink it to stay up all night. I don't think I've ever had one in my life.
  25. Yes, Jim, now for the answers.... (as if I will be able to recognize more than 10% of the musicians )
