  1. I don't care for the following: NBA: Celtics and Lakers NFL: Dolphins, Bills, and Jets (all in New England's division!!) Baseball: don't watch it anymore Boxing: all promotors, but I don't watch it anymore. NHL: don't watch it anymore College sports: Notre Dame
  2. Cute avatar, AB!
  3. I don't have this one so I'm interested in what people have to say about it.
  4. Thanks for this post, Rooster. Actually, I was aware that Hill was born in Chicago, but I thought his parents came from Haiti. Is that true or not? No mention of that in the article.
  5. Hill retains an attraction even for people like myself who tend to prefer straightahead hard bop. I enjoy some avantgarde stuff so long as it's GOOD!! Andrew Hill sessions tend to be GOOD!!. My first exposure to Hill was hearing the song, "Trippin" from SHADES on a radio program. I was blown away. Next came POD, as it was accessible, and later on Grass roots, and LIft Every Voice and the costly triad, "Black Fire," "Judgement," and "Smokestack." I also like Hill's work as sideman. Love those long Hill solos on Walt Dickerson, "To My Queen." I identify with his Caribbean background as well, but that really doesn't have anything to do with his music.
  6. It's too gory to watch!
  7. Thanks for that interesting interview of that inimitable and sensitive genius known as Charles Lloyd! Check out the "Live" section for info on Lloyd coming to Ann Arbor. I'm there!!
  8. That may be the reason why Patton didn't catch my attention as much as Melvin Rhyne or Don Patterson. The only Patton that went to my soul right away and made me groove was Got a good thing goin'. I'll check him out more closely after your comments. What is the one desert island John Patton disk, in your opinion? I would say that it is "Got a Good Thing Goin," but Patton, like many other musicians of his time period went through several phases, so it is impossible to just pick one. "That Certain Feeling" and "Memphis to NY Spirit" are desert island picks for his "1968 phase."
  9. I checked Jazzmatazz but didn't see Turrentine, "That's Where It's At." Do you know when that is scheduled out? Thanks
  10. Tell me about it, Jim. I have to go scrambling for those Meijer's "cheaters" (x1.25) whenever I try to read anything on those cds.
  11. Thanks Simon for the details. It's interesting because Cambodge (French spelling!!) at the time belonged to France as part of French Indochina. So was he stealing for himself then? Must have been as he could hardly need to steal on the behalf of French museums given the fact that the French ran the place, right? Unclear. Of course, perhaps even if France was running Cambodge as a colony then I suppose such actions were still not allowed. In fact, one could argue that the Cambodian customs would have been more rigid and strict with France running the show. Kind of ironic.
  12. I'm delighted with all the positive reinforcement here. Didn't know what to expect. I feared people would think this cd was too well-known or something. Looking forward to all the reviews.
  13. My feeling, Adam, is that once the precedent is established the world's museums would indeed be emptied. Going back to the example of the Thai cultural department for a moment: this department like it's cousins in other Third World countries is understaffed, underfunded and full of corruption. They would indeed ask for every single thing back if they could and I'm sure quite a few of the items would be back on the black market soon after. That's the reality of the Third World. Let's face it: the ability of the source countries to care for their objects is very subjective. That would mean a legal and moral mess, in my opinion. There simply has to be some kind of cutoff date as UNESCO has established. In the meantime, caveat emptor for any world museum seeking to purchase antiquities today! I believe the Musee Guimet in Paris was basically stocked through the aid of Andre Malraux, the ex-cultural minister, who as the story goes, was once caught smuggling antiquities out of Cambodia as a young man.
  14. Hmm Dan, Some monkey insude of me moves to my wallet whenever I look at Dusty Groove.
  15. Uh, uh, Chuck. Must be something wrong with my ears; or I'm just an incorrigible music moron. I don't like any of those three! Yikes!!
  16. Dude. "Stay As Sweet As You Are" from OOTB may be one of the greatest Blue Note performances ever!!!! I love Sonny Red's "Out of the Blue." But then again, I love disagreeing on this stuff too. I also like Sonny Red, "Out of the Blue." Took me a few listenings first. I was about to trade it away and gave it one last shot, then it all clicked. I now like it very much. SS: you and I like all the same stuff. You better not live within a 1,000 mile radius of my shopping places!
  17. Different strokes... I bought "Think" as much for my interest in Lee Morgan as any other reason, and was relatively disappointed by it. It's fairly good at times, but Lee sounds like he's half-asleep on the date (at leat as I recall - but I haven't listened to it in 10-12 months - which is about when I first got it). But I got the TOCJ of "Turning Point" about a month ago (my first time ever hearing it) --- and Lee's playing, and 'overall' too - I think I much prefer "Turning Point" over "Think". But I'll have to dig "Think" back out and see if I missed something. "Think!" is great stuff, Rooster! Had to play it a bunch of times before it grew on me, but now I love it. For my part, I couldn't stand "All Seeing Eye." That's why Rooster and I make great trading partners.
  18. I'm sorry to hear that you don't like this one, CS. It has given me a great deal of listening pleasure. Wait awhile, and perhaps give it another shot later. It is more than just a blowing date, and, also, Jackie and Tina worked so well together. Redd isn't all that spectacular as a soloist; it's his compositions and arrangements that are the thing. I guess you could say he plays "bandleader's piano", or "composer's piano", or whatever the phrase is. Thanks for the comments Shrdlu. Unfortunately, I no longer have the disc. Gave it/sold it/traded it: can't remember now. It is definitely in the realms of the possible that I haven't given many sessions enough of a chance. This could be one of them, who knows?
  19. I better get off my duff and state the AOW for the week of October 19. The selection is: Grant Green - Street of Dreams (click here to buy) It is the choice for several reasons: 1) I like it very much. 2) It is accessible. Many AOWs are somewhat obscure; others are very accessible. I choose something that everyone probably has and if they don't then...Whaddya waiting for???!!! This album is a MUST!!
  20. Was watching the NFL pregame show this morning and there was Warren Sapp discussing the NFL's response to his "spat" with Washington linebacker Arrington regarding his pre-game habit of waltzing throught he opposing team on the field as they undergo their stretching. He complained that Arrington had "snitched" and now the "slavemaster" had banned such activities during the pre-game warmups. Maybe "slavemaster" is just hood slang or whatever, but I find it offensive. Man, if a white guy had said something similar... What's funny is that in the very next sentence, he says that "we are paid a king's ransom to play a little boy's game." Then how can he be serving under "slavemasters?" "slavemaster?" stupid comments which can be construed as racist. Do I think he meant it in a racist manner as Rush Limbaugh had been accused? No, I don't. Again, it is perhaps just some kind of stupid slang. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as I did with Rush, but his comments were equally as stupid. Of course, Rush is forced to resign from ESPN after a big furor, while Sapp's comments are basically ignored. Slavemaster, Warren? I work for a slavemaster for peanuts; you DON'T!! What a moron!!
  21. My upset pick of the week: Jets over Buffalo. Right now Buffalo is up 3-0.
  22. Steelers-Broncos game just started. Chad Scott gets an interception early. Broncs better not think they can just pass all day long. Steelers will be prepared with all the negative press about their secondary. I'd run on them. This promises to be a good game. New England just beat the Giants. Offense stunk up the place but the Giants were worse. Collins threw four interceptions. Roman Pfifer had 19 tackles for NE! Defence looks great but Brady is having some problems. KC and GB are slugging it out right now. All tied up. Brownies looked like the better team against the Raiders in their win. Another win for Parcells.
