I was talking to my insurance agent the other day, and a third person in the conversation mentioned the fact that Ohio apparently sits in the middle of a fault. I told him that he was on drugs, but he insisted that this was the case. The insurance man (who is also a friend) backed him up on this and pointed out a minor quake that hit the area a few years ago (I was in Thailand at the time.) I then inquired whether my homeowner's insurance covers for this eventuality and he replie that it did not but I could add it. How much? Something in the range of $62/yr. I thought about it for a few seconds and imagined my house collapsing into a pile of rubble without any insurance to cover the loss. I said, "Add it on!" I virtually spend $62 every two weeks on cds. Surely, I can afford this rider. But am I just a sucker for a sale? What do you guys think of earthquake insurance for those of us who don't live in California?

And Wynton Marsalis on the penny. -
No tatoos nor jewelry. But then remember I couldn't even score a single point on the Metrosexual quiz.

Count me in as another one who doesn't know what to do. I've got all the indviduals cds, except "That Certain Feeling" is a burned copy. How can I justify spending so much money for duplicated stuff? I'll have to pass. The music is terrific: all of it. Still there's the fear that my current Big John holdings could fossilize over the next 300 years. What will I do then without some backup???

AOTW 9/28-10/4: GOT A GOOD THING GOIN'
connoisseur series500 replied to Big Al's topic in Album Of The Week
What is there to say about this album besides the fact that it simply KICKS!? To me jazz organ and guitar doesn't get better. Big Al makes the fine point that the session was not hurt by any ballads. This is entirely true. I love this cd so much that I bought two just in case one copy fossilizes on me over the next 300 years! I generally agree about the drummer. He sure helps the session. Funny thing about jazz organ trios: some people just can't stand them. I put this on the stereo and blasted it out. My wife said she couldn't stand it. I said, "Huh?" What sounded as music of the spheres to me sounded like some psychotic church music to her. Well what do you expect; she's from Barcelona...no I mean Thailand. Still can't figure that one out. There is a lot of organ playing in Thai clubs and such, but they aren't Big JOhn Patton!! Must be an acquired taste. To me, if you have any living tissue then this music will appeal. It has all the passion and emotion of life itself. Now, if you're just one of the walking dead...then maybe not. This makes my top ten list for favorite jazz organ sessions; no doubt about it. It is also curious to see how Patton was able to show an identity on the organ that appeared separate to Jimmy Smith's influence. Strikes me as rare for the time; so great was that overwhelming force known as Jimmy Smith. Big John was/is truly one of the organ greats. -

Thanks B-3er for nominating me for 10/19-10/25. Since we are moving along here very nicely, allow me to nominate the fellah for week 11/2-11/8 (my birthday!! ) ahead of time: Mr. Jacknife! Will let him know by pm. This will be fun. I do have something in mind for AOW, but will take suggestions and bribes! -_- -
The 8 years is just window dressing. Few contracts work out till the end like that. Will have to wait for the time that Minnesota encounters cap problems then they'll have to release him. The signing bonus will then get prorated out over the total number of years he was with the club.

Someone please pick me for the a.o.w.

How about me? Don't know what I would select yet, butl I'd come up with something hopefully available to most people. -
Randy Moss is so good it's scary. When does he go up for contract renewal?

Thanks Claude. I have seen that Blakey around somewhere. I'll pick it up when I run into it.

"One Night With Blue Note" VHS/DVD
connoisseur series500 replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
Not sure there are four of them, Bertrand. I believe there are only two volumes unlike the cds. Others more knowledgeable would have to confirm this. I am also looking for volume 1 on the VHS format. Half.com offers one at an outrageous price. I only paid around $7 for volume 2!! It was an ex-library copy I found in a record store. I don't have DVD equipment; otherwise, I would wait for that to come out. If anyone has a volume 1 available, please tell Bertrand and I. Thanks. -
I've only got the Donald Byrd session and the music is terrific. The recording, however, is not the greatest. Can anybody comment on the general recording quality of the others in the series? Thanks.

AOTW for 9/28-10/4 - What is it?
connoisseur series500 replied to Big Al's topic in Album Of The Week
I hope to be able to contribute to the comments on AOW. I've actually got this cd. Most of the time, I cannot participate because of obscure titles, or at least because I don't have them. I do have around 600 cds, but the picks haven't been in my collection. I love Big John! And you're talking some serious greaze with this AOW. -

America has had remarkable consistency of design and format in their paper money by international standards. Now advanced technology in the hands of potential counterfeiters will force the Treasury to reissue new bills every 7 to 10 years. This will be a numismatist's dream! I have collected old paper money in the past (sold off my collections,) and it wouldn't hurt to tuck away one of the "old" $20 bills for 20-30 years. You (or your progeny) will probably be able to sell it for a nice profit. Now whether the sum you sell it for would beat out inflation is another question. All investments have to beat out inflation of course in order for us to profit from them. I specialized in Asian paper currency. That region was highly unstable throughout the 60s and 70s as a result of the Vietnam war and the loss of colonial status. As a result, new editions of paper currency were issued and reissued constantly. It made it interesting for the collector. With American bills, there really wasn't anything to collect over the last few decades unless you specialized in collecting different signatures. Seems like this will change as we update our bills. I don't plan to return to paper money collecting, but I'll probably hang on to a new $20 whenever they come out and put it in plastic and hand it to my kid. I'll tell him to put it under his mattress for 30 years or something. -
Tennesse beat the Steelers once more in a heavyweight matchup. Buffalo was brought back to earth in Philadelphia.

I just picked up three of them at Dusty Groove: Duke Pearson, "Profile," "Tender Feelin's" and Grant Green, "Goin West." Personally, I'm happy they reissued them ahead of time. Saves me a little shipping.

Someone should jump on that Jimmy Smith, "Master II." Both "Master" and "MasterII" are great sessions. -

You scored a 2!? The comment from those of us like myself who couldn't even garner a single point is that you, Moose, are totally narcissistic and in love with the shallow physical side. You vain, Moose, you! -

Hey guys, Are you familiar with the Teddy Edwards tune, "Lee-Ann" on Groove Holmes, "Get up & Get it," which was also reissued on Groove's "Blue Groove?" If so, what's the chance that you guys may be able to play that at the Bird of Paradise? There's a nice latin beat for Randy and great grooves for you and lots of space for Joe. Pat Martino is the guitarist on that session. Man, I can't get that beautiful groove out of my head. Really pretty song. -
Music Fan or Collector?
connoisseur series500 replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It's a good question, A-Brass; and I must thank you for drawing me away from that "what do you read in the can" thread. We all know to blame jacknife for all his copious contributions on that learned subject. Free For All displayed remarkable scatalogical scholarship as well. Impressive! I'm a jazz fan. Yet I get into buying phases that are unstoppable. In fact, I don't think I've slowed down that much at all though I keep trying to. I feel that I love the music but at the same time there are many cds which I have heard only once as I don't have the time to get to them right away. One indication that I am not a pure collector is the fact that I turn over stuff if it doesn't hit me after a few listens. I do try to cull my collection from time to time. In fact, I do this too often as evinced from my thread about regretting getting rid of certain titles. I really feel that I am close to the end of my collecting. Just a few more things to get. And actually, I have slowed down quite a bit (except I ordered all six new conns.) -
