  1. Has anyone heard "The Source"? Its a new release on ECM, and I believe Trygve Seim is in the group.
  2. What Bol said about the rhythm sections.
  3. And he's bringing Mark Turner and Jeff Ballard! I can't wait for that one. Sorry Joe!
  4. Bitches Brew was my first too, about 8 or 9 years ago. Not an ideal introduction to his music, but a PERFECT introduction to jazz for an open minded pot smoking Deadhead college student like I was.

    Jack DeJohnette

One of the finest drummers I've ever heard, and a nice guy too.
  6. Anyone check this out yet? Saw it this past weekend and loved it! One of the few horror movies in recent memory to actually generate and sustain real tension for an extended amount of time. One of my biggest gripes about horror films of recent years (other than the fact that so few are rated R) is that they seem to rely too heavily on the "made you jump" types of scares so typical in the 80's slasher movies. While "The Decent" does use these at times, it never relies on them....it actually creates a real feeling of dread established by the story and claustrophobic atmosphere. DEFINITELY not a movie for kids. Lots of gore (but never used just for the sake of using it) and some very disturbing images. Fans of the horror genere need to check this one out. edit: correction for stupid spelling error
  7. I think she's good looking, and was good in the suprisingly entertaining "Mean Girls", but other than that, she doesn't really occupy my thoughts.
  8. A new Vonski album....always good news!
  9. This board never ceases to amaze me. Thanks Joe and Chuck!
  10. 1. There was an episode of the old school Hanna-Barbara "Tom & Jerry" cartoons where Jerry lives inside a grand piano. There is then a concert in which Tom is the pianst, and begins to play while Jerry is inside the piano sleeping. Jerry begins having a really hard time with the music and the episode proceeds to Tom & Jerry having a war with each other all while Tom is playing some piano concerto. Does anybody remember this episode and know what piece that was that Tom was playing? And if you do, can you recommend a good recording of it? 2. What is a good recording of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue"? Thanks!
  11. He's been at the Jazz Showcase at least twice in that time, and I went once. He'll probably be back there pretty soon. It's the main place he plays when in Chicago. Eric I guess that makes sense. I didn't go to the Showcase until around 2001. I'll keep my fingers crossed!
  12. I didn't really care for it. Strange thing, is that I can't really find much fault with the film (I didn't read the PKD story), but something just didn't click.
  13. I'm very jealous. Along with Paul Motian, Andrew is the artist I want to see perform before I die. As far as I know, as long as I've been into jazz (about 8 years or so) he hasn't performed in Chicago, which surprises me, becuase he's originally from here.
  14. Getthing to this thread somewhat late. I'm very sorry to hear this news, Free for All.
  15. Roscoe is a true giant of this music. We are blessed to have him on this planet with us today.
  16. Pax and Andrew! are both absolutely worth getting immediately. Some of the best music ever IMO.
  17. Thom Yorke of Radiohead fame has an excellent new solo album out called "The Eraser". The sound of the music is from the Kid A / Amnesiac school, but this one is much easer listening IMO.
  18. Got this e-mail from Margaret Davis. Can't wait!! Dear all, I just got off the phone with the great Fred Anderson, and there's wonderful news: Concerts will begin this Friday, July 28th, 2OO6 at the Velvet Lounge at its new location, 67 East Cermak Road betw. Michigan & Wabash in the City of Chicago's historic Motor Row District, just around the corner and within sight of the old Velvet Lounge location! The phone number at the new space is the same as before: 312-791-9O5O. It's not the grand opening yet (that will be in a few more weeks), but Fred wants to start having music in the new space as sort of test runs so he can discover and perfect any remaining flaws and see if there's anything still needed there that might have been overlooked. Fred was in the new space when I spoke with him, and he sounds very happy. Everyone please come out and celebrate and support Fred Anderson, a true hero for all time, in the culmination of this long, drawn-out, very difficult transition that was forced on him.
  19. That's good to know! Buying from Rouge Art is expensive, although I have to say this Roscoe CD was worth the 24 Euros. You should get this one. Done!! Man, this board must be the best thing to happen to the jazz music industry in quite some time. Enjoy the disc!
