  1. I agree. I got it just about a month or so ago, and I am absolutely loving this set.
  2. Wasn't Jack DeJohnette supposed to be on drums for this one?
  3. I'm gonna get flamed for this......but I've always found Pete LaRoca to be a boring drummer. Not bad by any means, just not that interesting.
  4. Elvin Jones and Tony Williams are my favorites. I love Max Roach, Art Blakey and Philly Joe Jones as well. As for new guys, I like Brian Blade, Nasheet Waits and Matt Wilson.
  5. Its difficult to explain, but the idea of Batman running around in your own backyard takes away from the feel of the film tremendously. Tim Burton had no problem in this dept. Otherwise, I thought Batman Begins was a pretty decent flick. It wasn't much fun, but I don't think that is what they were going for, especially after the travesty of Joel Schumaker's vision. As far as comic book movies go, its one of the standouts, but that's not really saying much.
  6. Now I realize I'm not one of the most traveled guys around here, but just what is "Gotham City" supposed to look like anyway? ←
  7. Thanks for starting this thread....I was wondering what this new JACK FM radio station that just showed up in Chicago was all about. I'm not much of a fan.
  8. Congrats, ghost. May your contributions always help keep this music alive and strong.
  9. My thoughts are with all our friends in London, as well as those with family there. This is terrible.
  10. Another endorsement for the JRM. Heaven on earth for a jazz fan. Plus, they have most of their OJC's priced between $9.99 - $11.99 right now. And they have em ALL!

I will be out of town on the 14th....otherwise, there would have been no way I'd miss that one.
  12. Fantasy's is my favorite re-issue program of them all. The K2's and the SACD consistantly sound great and come wth great packaging. My favorite K2s are the ones of the Bill Evans trio at the Vanguard. WOW!!!!
  13. Aside from the fine acting, unbelievable visual effects and sound, and the high doses of suspense, what I really liked about this movie is that it didn't give into any chiches. It could have easily had corny one liners. There were characters in the beginning that could have made sporadic appearences throughout to provide comic relief. I could get into more, but I might ruin some of the plotline for those who haven't seen it. But lets just say that it was a very straight-forward film with very little dialogue, lots of great camera work, and almost nothing in the bullshit department. This film could have sunk at any given moment, but it didn't. I really respect that.
  14. Agree completely. This was a great movie.

    Tom Harrell

Try "Upswing" and "Labyrinth". Those are my two favorites. "Live at the Village Vanguard" also kicks ass. All three of these are pretty much "straight ahead".

    Favorite "Comper"?

Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner are my favorites, although I only recently realized how brilliant Hank Jones is as well. His comping on the new Joe Lovano CD really caught my ear, and after going back and re-listening to all the Hank Jones in my collection, its clear that he's one of the best.
  17. The only Pelt disc I have is "Insight" on the Criss Cross label, which is excellent. He sounds really good on the Ralph Peterson Criss Cross sessions as well. He's really a fine trumpet player....one of the best young cats around IMO. I need to get this, as well as Close to my Heart, his previous MaxJazz disc.
  18. Winard Harper Sextet is in town at the Showcase this week. I'm hoping to catch a set or two over the weekend.
  19. I'd remove "Moanin' "and put "Free For All" in its place.
  20. I thought so too. The original Jurassic Park's dinosaurs look better, and thats 12 years ago. But then again, its tough to beat out ILM in the effects dept. I'll probably still see the movie though. I liked Lord of the Rings and am curious to chart Peter Jackson's progress. Also, I'm a fan of Adrien Brody and especially Naomi Watts.
  21. What does a decent Sirius car stereo with a CD player cost?
  22. Thanks! Just pre-ordered Oblique, Judgement and Time for Tyner.
  23. BruceW, wasn't Dawn of the Dead the second one, and Day of the Dead the third? I hope my comments weren't mis interperted as me disliking Night of the Living Dead. It is probably my favorite of the series. I agree that Land of the Dead is the best one since Dawn of the Dead. I haven't seen Shaun of the Dead, but its been on my list to rent for quite some time now. It has now moved to the top of that list, and I will probably pick it up soon.
  24. I got the chance to see it yesterday and I loved it. While I wouldn't put it on the same level as "Night of the Living Dead" or the original "Dawn of the Dead", it is much stronger than "Day of the Dead", and FAR superior to any of these other so called "horror" movies coming out. Seeing this movie was like a breath of fresh air. It is very refreshing to see that some directors still have the balls to put such horrific images on the screen. Fans of the series should really like this one. It has strong doses of Romero's trademark social commentary to go along side LOTS of really gory scenes of zombies feasting on human flesh. Plus some great comedic moments as well. Dennis Hopper is fantastic, and the rest of the supporting cast does a good job as well. Those who are not fans of the series may not appreciate what Romero is doing here, but nonetheless it is without a doubt a worthy entry to the series.
