  1. Great article here, thanks for sharing! Very well written.
  2. Thanks for asking everybody! I live in San Diego and the fire got within 3-5 miles of my place. I live by a canyon so it was pretty scary, especially with 70's era construction, and all that entails (hmmm... as Blue Note Music goes, construction goes????). I've got over 2000 CD's and was looking at a big loss if anything happens to my house (yes, I have insurance, but that only goes so far). Thankfully, the wind in my area was pretty much non-existent, and I do live closer to the coast, which stays cooler. The one break we got down here is that the winds did die down. The air's pretty disgusting, but hopefully we will get back to semi-normal by the end of the week. As for the hunter who started this mess... But in the end, I'm glad to be alive. I don't live with my fiancee yet, so I knew I had a place to go, and friends to help out, and in the end that's more important than anything. Thanks for starting this thread!
  3. I agree with everybody else... run, don't walk, who knows how long this set will be in print or indeed if it is still in print. Great, great music.. bought my copy as soon as it was available, after the disappointment of the Mosaic set being out of print, and would never look back...
  4. Glad to see a thread on Sweet Poppa Lou... I've got all the early stuff except Midnight Sun, and most of the later BN stuff too. The Natural Soul is such a great album IMO.. ... the best thing, I think, is that Lou is still very much alive and kickin' at the age of 77; how many of his contemporaries are still alive, let alone playing?
  5. Andrew Hill - Andrew! Larry Young - Contrasts Bobby Hutcherson - Knucklebean (Not sure if that's really in a Conn Vibe, but let's roll with it for now) Erroll Garner - Some 10" LP's to make a Conn Lou Donaldson - Midnight Sun (OK, that just came out on Mosaic..hey in that case the master is fresh, right?) Sam Rivers - Contours
  6. In order of allegiance: 1. NFL - Redskins 2,3. College Basketball and Football - Maryland Terrapins 3. NHL - Capitals 4. MLB - Padres 5. NBA - Lakers (at least when they are giving a good effort. 1 trumps all other rooting combined.
  7. The program order of Let 'Em Roll is truly wonderful. My favorite cut is The Turnaround, but they're all good, and it's just so enjoyable. Did Big John ever cut a bad record? I don't think so - and I've got all the Blue Notes, Minor Swing, This One's for JA, and all of the sideman appearances I know about - Lou Donaldson, Grant Green, George Braith (Laughing Soul), Grassella Oliphant (The Grass Is Greener), Johnny Griffin (someone mentioned this one earlier - it's also interesting hearing Hank Jones on organ on that one), and Red Holloway (the Legends of Acid Jazz)... The only one I'm missing that's available on CD as a leader is Blue Planet Man. Any sideman appearances that I missed? I'm goin' slidin' through da greaze now!
  8. Hatred is probably too much, but I sure get to work up an intense dislike for 3 hours for whoever plays my beloved hometown Redskins on Sunday! I also probably have too much gleeful fun when the football team in the city I live in - the Chargers - loses, haven't liked them since they got rid of Bobby Ross.
  9. I've never heard the 80's - 90's stuff from McGriff, but the Greatest hits that was put out by Blue Note a few years ago is a really fun CD! I also have The Worm and enjoy it... couldn't really get into Electric Funk... maybe that would be different today.
  10. I've got many many jazz organ CD's (maybe 100-150 with the organist as leader and god knows how many with organists as sidemen), and it is likely if I had to pick my desert island organ disc, it would be Let 'Em Roll... love that guitar/organ/vibes combination! (Another favorite would be Street of Dreams with Larry Young)... Let 'Em Roll just gets better and better as you run through the disc.. ...and it's my very favorite for sure Blue Note cover art. The art also got co-opted for the Blue Movies cover. Speaking of greeze, how 'bout some Johnny Lytle with his organist Milt Harris and "The Village Caller"?
  11. From the Jazz in Paris series, I like the Pentacostal Feeling CD from Lou Bennett, along with Bennett playing organ on Rene Thomas' Meet Mr. Thomas. Got my copies from dustygroove.
  12. Not exactly, but you might try Lawrence of Newark - his next album - to see the direction he went in. Personally, though, I far prefer Mother Ship.
  13. Have there been any comparisons on the sound quality between the TOJC and the new Conn for the base Sonic Boom album?
  14. Better than my 'Skins did - got a whuppin' at the hands of the Bucs.. back to .500, which is where I think they'll be at the end. Jim S - nice game for the 'Boys! Watched the end of that game after the outcome of mine was no longer in doubt. Actually, I have NFL Sunday Ticket in the house, it's fun getting to see all the games but if taken to full extreme probably could be construed as wasteful couch-potatodom.
  15. Had it years ago, sold it back, got it back about a year ago, then picked up the RVG... the album has impressed me more as time has gone on. I also really like El Gaucho.
  16. Jimmy Smith - Live at Small's Paradise... it seemed bloated to me, may have liked it better if they had issued it as individual RVG's like the original albums. The only 1500 series that I bought and sold back. IMO, they should have reissued the Baby Grand live LP's instead.
  17. It's great to see this one out for people who don't have the Mosaic. I do, and this was my favorite of the post- Unity sessions. It's a bit out - but not like Of Love and Peace - which to me is far too often a cacophony. Let's try to get Contrasts out next!
  18. SS - I doubt that That Certain Feelin would be released as a Conn, both with the Select coming out and IMO the music is too straight-ahead by the standards of most Conns... I'm really glad to have the album, though, finally... due to the Select. Let 'Em Roll would be a great RVG IMO. And, to paraphrase a couple of our members... HELL YEAH BIG JOHN PATTON IS INDEED THA SHIT!
  19. B3er, thanks for taking the time to discuss all this stuff with us! One organist that I really like that I have not seen mentioned in this discussion is Barbara Dennerlein from Germany - made some really fine records in the 90's. German lady, still around (actually, she's 38, same as me). Patton and Young are my faves, with Patterson and Shirley Scott a little behind, then Groove Holmes, Freddie Roach, and Jimmy Smith. Also like McDuff - especially on Moon Rappin', Baby Face Willette, and Mel Rhyne. Anyone else I should check out?
  20. Nice list overall... BTW, I got the JRVG of Goin' West and it's a real nice album, I think the sound quality is good as well. That will be a treat for y'all who don't want to spend over $20 for the session. Picked up Prayer Meeting in the same purchase from dustygroove, but have not listened to it yet.
  21. Yeah that distortion is nasty! Glad I kept my TOJC of The Way I Feel. But this set is still worth it to me for That Certain Feeling alone - essentially I paid $44 for that album. Which is nowhere near my top price to buy a CD.
  22. This record rules! Before I knew about Dusty Groove et al, I actually paid $68 for a TOJC of this title... and felt it was worth every penny! It never lets up and closes on a hot note with "Amanda". I am very glad this is no longer so hard to find; actually my $68 copy is with my fiancee and I kept the Rare Groove of it after being unable to tell any qualitative sonic difference. Great pick!
