  1. None on mine either and I got one in the Mulligan/Hodges as well...
  2. Just gave my copy a spin - IMO, very good, at least on the SACD player.
  3. Planning on Thelonius Monk, Wes Montgomery, and Vince Guaraldi for sure... maybe the Gil Evans too.
  4. Bring on Goin' West!!!!! What's Hiroshi's email again?
  5. There really are a lot of nice people on the Hoffman board and it's pretty civil too - the moderators keep a tight rein on hostilities... ... Steve Hoffman's a good guy, nice to know a (very good) mastering engineer will patiently answer everyone's questions...
  6. 'tis funny how Greg just trumpets every SACD as being fantastic... just like any format, there are good and bad ones... this falls to the later... sad to say. Anyone have an idea when another round of Blue Note SACD's come out? Hopefully the next ones - if any do - will be an improvement!
  7. I'm enjoying the civility here too, don't miss the venom of some of the BNBB posts, it was getting tiring...
  8. I am enjoying the Billy Mitchell one as well... nice early Bobby Hutcherson on it! If Sundazed is remastering, they are very very good!
  9. Kenny G - for any praise at all. He is not jazz, and he fools people into thinking he is.
  10. Just got my copy Saturday as an SACD. It isn't classic Blue Note jazz, OK, but compared to the other new releases it's competing against I'd rather hear it than just about any other pop record on the radio. I feel that Norah and Diana are net assets to jazz, recording on jazz labels may be the gateway into classic Blue Note and Verve sessions and the proceeds probably help pay for some of the reissues. OK - I admit a certain bias - they're both hot! Even without them, better having them sell than Kenny G!
  11. Playing a couple of cuts as I write, concur with everyone else that there is a boost in treble and a bit on the bright side... not horrible, but definitely not the best SACD out there.
  12. Very very well said DrJ! If people have the money to get multichannel systems, it's really a lot of fun. Dark Side of the Moon on stereo is good. In 5.1 it's grrrrreat! SACD sounds deeper to me, DVD-A wider. Since one started more for audio and the other for video, not a surprise. I also agree regular CD won't go away anytime soon... prices on both hi-rez formats need to drop for market penetration.
  13. not Freddie Roach's All That's Good... not Solomon Ilori's African High Life... how about Dippin' by Hank Mobley?
  14. For clarity's sake, I believe all SACD players will play CD as well. If you have interest in formats other than jazz, you may want to buy a combo SACD/DVD-A player, I know Kevin is happy with his Pionner DV-45A and I'm happy with my Yamaha (though at $1000, not for every budget)...
  15. Art Blakey - Orgy in Rhythm - just not into records that are so heavily percussion-oriented, clearly a matter of personal taste only. Jimmy Smith - Groovin' at Smalls Paradise - somehow I think the reissue of this would have been better without the bonus tracks, as it is I found it too long and monotoned. The Baby Grand albums are much better IMO. Those two I had and sold. I'm not thrilled with "Some Other Stuff" but it's on the Moncur box anyway. Too far out for me.. which makes me glad I never acquired the Cecil Taylor ones, which would be way too far out.
  16. Great series... my favorites would be Midnight Creeper (Donaldson), Got a Good Thing Goin' (Patton), Two Headed Freap (Ronnie Foster), and Moon Rappin' (McDuff)... the whole series is great if you like organ jazz... and I LOVE it!
  17. Hopefully you are right... would really enjoy an RVG'd Inner Urge. Along with Blues Walk by Lou Donaldson... is that still up there?
  18. Longest ever was probably a month... this year I think I went one week without buying any
  19. Into Somethin' from here... must say, however, that my all-time favorite Blue Note cover would be Let 'Em Roll by Big John Patton.
  20. Oh Yeah! Ready for the Pearson! Wonderful news, may get the Amy too for some early Bobby Hutcherson!
  21. Interesting thread, and I definitely appreciate the civility here compared to any similar topics on the BNBB... I'm caucasian too, neighborhood is pretty much all white or Asian. My girlfriend is Mexican, from Mexico City. The guy who gave me the big kick-start for jazz is Jamaican too, half black and half Indian. Interesting guy... ...my stepmom is interesting, she is a big advocate for the little guy and seems to be biased in favor of African-Americans. I have enjoyed the black people that she has had over to the house, but not because of the color of the skin - because of their dignity and grace, and I would have liked them if they were green or purple too. Not sure if this is adding any value or mere rambling, hopefully more of the former...

    HA!

I enjoyed it Jim - thanks!
  23. Had to go with Grant Green Street of Dreams, as I once wrote a counter-review that was never published...
  24. Thanks all! I ordered the Byrd/Adams today, based on commentary here and the fact that this gives me two Byrd/Adams albums I didn't have, plus I heard the JRVG of Off To The Races I have is horrible! Donaldson I will hold off on for now, would like to see Blues Walk RVG'd but I'm not going to spend $96 for that and Midnight Sun,essentially... B)
