  1. I heard a cut (Paper Tiger) from this disc on KCSM the other day, and decided to give it a spin. Now, I know beans about this Beck guy; I'm sure 90% of you guys here know more about him than I do. I just don't listen to new pop/rock anymore to any great degree. So whether or not this was a good idea is for someone else to decide; all I can comment on is the execution. Frankly, I can't recommend this disc. Maybe it's because I hang out here, but I can't help but compare other organ CDs to our own beloved Organissimo's effort, and this one comes up short. Lonnie Smith's organ work is cool, but seems awfully simple to me (speaking as a decided NONexpert, of course). Fathead Newman's sax is fine, but it's not enough to carry the disc. Weakest of all to me is the drum work (Lafrae Sci, it says here...). I mean, these drums would go over alright on the latest pop disc, but for jazz? Maybe it's just me, but I've heard drum machines with more soul... I'm probably making this out to be worse than it is, but still...
  2. No way! I think it should be known by one and all that these here "pig-dog" things Jim is talking about can get jobs and my wife can't. Maybe it'll light a fire under her ass if I tell her that even "pig-dogs" are finding gainful employment. More than likely it'll just get me banished to the couch, but what the hell. By the way, I've searched and searched but have had no luck; anyone found a picture of a pig-dog yet?
  3. You know, after today's "listen #2", I must admit that the artist who really stands out for me on this disc isn't Brotzmann, but Peter Kowald. I hereby officially retract any and all disparaging remarks I've made in the past concerning bass solos...
  4. Saint Vitus, those were all just too darned easy!
  5. Hmmm. I think I'll take your advice, John, and try something later. I grabbed For Adolphe Sax only because it was a title I'd heard of before. In all honesty, I didn't realize until I got home that it was from the sixties. (Jeez, this came out at the same time as the "revolutionary" Sgt. Pepper? Hah!) Actually, it was enjoyable to a degree. Of course, if I hadn't been listening to Jim Sangrey's discs this year beforehand, it probably would have caused a massive coronary...
  6. Help! I just listened to For Adolphe Sax and I think my ears fell off! Hello? Hello? Assuming the bleeding stops and I recover, can anyone out there fill me in on where this record would fit into Brotzmann's work (best? worst? average?) and where you would suggest looking next? Please type loudly...
  7. Uh oh...maybe we should move this over to the "who shot JFK" thread...we've all been neglecting the Opie Factor!
  8. No. Sorry. I'm certain it's Robert Goulet. This is Andy Williams (center): Oh yeah? So why is he standing there with JFK and Marilyn Manson (in his younger days, admittedly...) if you're so smart!
  9. Basra and True Blue will probably only go for a couple of bucks. Better sell them to me, instead...
  10. Isn't that Andy Williams?
  11. Damn! I am extremely impressed!
  12. Thanks for the link, Joe. Not as much fun as his writings on Kenny G., but still interesting!
  13. Damn! Seems like someone was looking for Money Jungle at one time, but I can't seem to remember who....
  14. Wow; I just read these a couple of years ago and didn't even notice "Homer Simpson"! Time for another read...
  15. Jim, running is the only athletic activity I miss. I'd sure like to get back into it, but I'm afraid my knees would go on strike if I didn't lose about 60 to 70 pounds before I start. There's something about the solitude and the calm. And that "runners high" they talk about is real!
  16. Just make sure it's only a break and you come back, okay?
  17. Since when is it big news when some kid beats a sausage? I think the press is making too much over this...
  18. In Junior High I was into football; my only varsity sport was tennis, which I must admit I miss. These days, unless you count noncompetitive cycling and walking, I'm pretty much sportsless...
  19. Cool! I'm gonna have to give that a shot. Shoot, I make my own bread; why not? As for the bacon suggestion made above, I'm not religious or anything, but isn't that just asking for trouble??
  20. It's no secret even to a nonsports fan like me that the NBA winks at pot smoking; they have for years, and frankly I don't disagree with the policy at all. Could it be that some of these players are so stupid that they think this protects them from prosecution by the law?
  21. I tried something a couple of weeks ago that I think just may be the world's greatest food. The problem is, I'm willing to bet that I'm the only person here who had never tried this before. Go ahead and laugh, but at age 45, I finally broke down and tried bagels and cream cheese. Hey, how was I to know? I grew up in rural Georgia; if you didn't fry it, we didn't know it was edible! Now I can't let a day go by without my fix....someone please tell me this isn't as fattening as I think it is!
  22. Well that certainly fits!
  23. I knew it! It was TomatBlueNote, out for revenge!!!
  24. Oops! I didn't intend my post as a reaction to yours, shrugs; sorry 'bout that.
