  1. A heads-up on recordings from the Numero label: Dusty Groove has discounted their inventory of this label. Lots of new discs at half-off. Numero is normally quite expensive, so this is good news. Wide-ranging music: soul, hillbilly, Brit pop, indie rock, techno ... just about any genre you can think of, as long as it's fairly obscure.
  2. Alice Coltrane: Reflection On Creation And Space (A Five Year View) This double album is an 82-minute compilation of previously issued Alice Coltrane recordings from her Impulse! sessions. What makes it interesting is that most of the tracks are edited versions which seamlessly transition into each other, making it a sort of Alice Coltrane DJ experience. I didn't think I'd like hearing "incomplete" tunes, but that wasn't the case at all. Ed Michel (with Bob Thiele?) did an excellent job putting this together in 1973. All four vinyl sides could actually fit on one compact disc. I'd buy it! I'm a little surprised that a boutique label hasn't tried to put this compilation out. I think it could attract new listeners.
  3. Nope. Lost opportunity. Five tracks only, as opposed to the nine that made up the 1993 U.S. issue.

    Horace Tapscott

The Tapscott Sessions, Vol. 10 Been finding a lot of solace in this recording lately. Healing.
  5. 20 more titles added to the 60th Anniversary series. I hope this one: comes with all the bonus tracks.

    Dexter Gordon

I can't speak for the Gordon (yet), but the 2-disc Griffin set on Muzak/Black Lion is very fine. Great sound.
  7. I bet the vinyl sounds good. I have vinyl rips but no hardcopies. It's about the fourth time these titles have had a compact disc reissue in Japan. But it's the first time I won't miss their limited sales window!
  8. Wow! Thanks for making the initial effort to contact them.

    Dexter Gordon

    Thanks for that information!

    Joe Henderson

That makes sense to me. Perhaps stating "when Joe takes it to the edge" might work a little better. I like Joe on the edge. (Don't want to derail the question, but this record probably has my favorite Haynes playing on it. But I need to re-listen to his Impulse! album again to be sure.)

    Out of The Blue

Here's video from the Mt. Fuji recording. Kenny Garrett gets to take a longer solo than the other horn players. What's up with that?

Available again in this Japanese configuration. But can two discs really cover the "complete" 1967 Montmartre recordings?

    Joe Henderson

Question to the board: • What record, to your ears, contains Henderson's most out playing? Interpret "out" however you like. The general idea is "outside" of standard changes or even standard pitches.
  15. MUZAK (Looking forward to picking up the Ben Webster.)
  16. Deep Jazz Reality is now reissuing titles from the Trio label, under the banner "Jazz Legends in Japan." These two Cecil Taylor titles are coming back into circulation: Solo • 1980¥ • available May 20, 2020 Akisakila • 1980¥ • available May 20, 2020 I've had the music as digital files for ages, but have never owned any sort of hard copy. This can now change! CD Japan has been slow to list Deep Jazz Reality titles, but they do eventually show up on their site.

    Joe Henderson

Agreed. I purchased the compact discs when they first came out and was always a little bugged by Henderson's sound, though his solos were spotless. Back in 2013/14, the Japanese market reissued "Super High Material" versions of these same discs; the improvement in sound is (to me) only minor. I've always had a soft spot for Henderson's cover of "Boo Boo's Birthday."
  18. Good to know! Would be nice to be able to hear the whole show some day.
  19. Here's a handy discography for Adderley.

Do you mean duo (Darling/Soph)? I was at North Texas in 1988, when Ed Soph was still there, and Jamey Aebersold gave one of his clinics. I have to say, the guy, no matter what people think of him, can play. Ed Soph was on the gig, but for the life of me, I can't remember the bassist. I don't think it was Darling. I think they brought in the bassist from the 1 O'Clock, who, at that time, was a 15 year-old wunderkind. I remember walking back to Bruce Hall thinking Damn, Aebersold's for real.

Graas hadn't had his tonsils removed. Not yet at least.
