Jill Lepore has a new book coming out on Tuesday, These Truths, a 900 page plus history of the US, that has received some very nice reviews. Here’s a profile that appeared in today’s New York Times. Jill Lepore on Writing the Story of America (in 1,000 Pages or Less)

I’m not a big fan of that period.

Cool looking. Love the color. When we lived in Brasil in the early 60s, there was a VW plant there that made nothing but Beetles and that’s all you saw on the road.

The Volkswagen Beetle is set to be discontinued again; production will be discontinued in July. Beetle Will Be Discontinued Again The first car I ever owned was a Beetle, light blue, a very dependable car. I had it through law school and kept it when I started working. One day, when I got off the train, I went to get in my car and lo and behold it had been stolen. A real pity. Apparently, today's Beetles drive more like Golfs than the old Beetles, which had the air cooled engines. I'd look for an old one but this creaky body has gotten used to modern conveniences.

Terrific article. Una Más is my favorite and I have quite a few of his albums. The Blues in Bebop compilation issued by Savoy is also pretty darn good.

Bird Lives is a good one as is Charlie Rouse’s Social Call.

I’m thinking about taking the Louis Armstrong one. -

One More Way To Tell That You're Ok With Pop Passing You By
Brad replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I never heard of them until this thread so I’m ok with Pop passing me by. You know you’re dating yourself when your first reaction when seeing the title of this thread is that it has to do with Louis Armstrong. -

I agree. PayPal is easier and with Friends and Family you don’t incur any fees.

I’m asking myself the same question about the Jamal set. I have a few, not many of his CDs, and I feel that’s enough. I just don’t need 9 more CDs. Moreover, as I noted earlier, you can’t buy everything. -

"Jazz Side Story: Jazz And Leonard Bernstein"
Brad replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
I just listened to it and enjoyed it tremendously since I knew little about his life. Obviously, the parts that interested me the most was his impact on his overseas audience. The shortwave radio was our best friend. Hearing the A Train and his intro literally took me back and literally gave me the shivers. What I found dismaying was the criticism he received for the music he played. No one can understand what it was like to live overseas in the 50s and the 60s where you were always starved for news from the United States and living in a dictatorship and I was American! I can’t imagine what his show and the VOA meant for people living in the Iron Curtain. My compliments on the work you did to put this show together, and many thanks. I also want to add that I can never listen to Take the A Train without thinking of the VOA and Willis Conover. -
MLB 2018: let the games begin!
Brad replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. There are many teams who were lucky to sneak into the playoffs but went onto win the WS. The 87 Twins and 2006 Cardinals come to mind. -
Mosaic Records is releasing a Savory collection set
Brad replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Of the three Waller releases that I ordered as a result of this thread, the RCA is my least favorite. I don’t think the music is as good as the others, plus no liner notes or discographical information other than the bare minimum. One entry said it was recorded prior to 1972. No kidding! Oddly enough, both this set and the If You Got to Ask, You Ain’t Got It box were issued by Sony (although the latter was issued by Sony Legacy). -

The Yankees are playing poorly right now. I hate to use the word cratering but they haven’t played well in a long time. The Mets play the Red Sox this weekend. I will be happy with winning one of the three. -

I don’t think it was there earlier but glad to see a few copies are still around.
