Nice relaxing music. I lived in Spain and this reminds me of music I used to hear there.

We will probably only see concepts proposed that they think will have appeal to a large cross section of buyers. I know this is a pipe dream and probably has been discussed but partnering with Concord and their Fantasy labels could yield a lot of possibilities.

Even when your team is bad — something I have a lot of experience with — watching them is stress relief. -

Wayne Shorter in the New Yorker
Brad replied to Brad's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I don't know if this is a reference to the edits that the New Yorker made to Ethan's article but if it is, they're trying to sell magazines in a difficult environment. Perhaps when Whitney Balliett was writing, you would have seen very long articles but this is a different age. My family has subscribed to the New Yorker since the 1930s and I remember as late as the 90s, the New Yorker excerpting books. I read many a book or most of it in the New Yorker. Unfortunately, those days are long gone and Vanity Fair, their corporate owners, expect things more topical and are more focused on the bottom line, not that the prior owners weren't interested in making a profit. -

I knew you’d get a kick out of this article! -
The only thing I can liken it to is a reserve auction where you don’t know the seller’s figure for selling an item so you keep bidding it up until you hit the number. Here, they seem to want to keep it secret so they get more people to “subscribe” to the release. Perhaps if people knew the number and whether Mosaic had reached it, they’d stop ordering.

I received an email from Scott saying they’re getting closer. However, he wouldn’t divulge the shortfall, which doesn’t make sense to me.

I agree with Jim that their approach doesn’t seem like a business that’s going to be able to survive, while recognizing that if they don’t meet their target figure, they’re not going to make the set. They could also emphasize that a purchase of an older set are dollars that help them make new sets. Perhaps they need someone to help them navigate this new economic reality. That may not be Michael’s and Scott’s strength. I’m not trying to be critical, just making an observation (not based on any facts, mind you).

I wonder what the shortfall is.

Looks like they’re short of the number required to make this set. New Woody Herman Release? Thanks very much to everyone who has preordered this set. While it was a strong response, unfortunately we are short of our goal to produce the set. Therefore we are resending this request to everyone to see if we can put this set in production. We regret any pressure or inconvenience this may cause you in your purchasing decisions, but this is the only way that we can proceed. We are currently determining whether to a release a new Mosaic set THE COMPLETE WOODY HERMAN DECCA, MARS AND MGM SESSIONS (1943-1954), which will include 131 tracks on 7 CDs With the slowing of sales of CDs, we need to be assured that there is enough demand for this set before incurring the costs and commitment to issue this body of work. The Mosaic business model is becoming harder and harder to sustain and therefore we'll need a strong response for preorders before we are able to proceed. If you place an advance order for this set, your credit card will not be charged until we create and press the set and ship it to you (however PayPal is immediately deducted from your funds). We strongly suggest that you not combine this advance order with any existing sets. We expect to make a decision by the end of August and the set would be available at the end of 2018. Thank you for your support and understanding, Michael & Scott

What live music are you going to see tonight?

I just returned from a cruise on Norwegian and they had, surprisingly, a very nice jazz six piece band. On Thursday they did a program entitled A Tribute to Art Blakey, which was very nice. Another surprise was that it was very well attended. Unfortunately, I didn’t get their names. -

I purchased a car a couple of years ago so I don’t need to worry about this issue for a few more.

If you look online, there seems to be a lot of discussion about this issue. If it was happening to me, I’d take it to a computer shop.

Fortunately, it wasn’t extremely cold but it was a drag mentally. I can’t imagine what the people in Houston and Puerto Rico are going through. We have a generator now.

I didn’t know how to respond to Chewy’s prior comment.

His moniker reminds me of a calypso song that my parents said resembled me when we lived in Trinidad in 1960-61.

I haven’t gone through one like the ones they have in Florida but I did live through Sandy. No power for two weeks, which wasn’t a lot of fun I can tell you. Fortunately, not too much damage to our house.
