  1. You couldn’t be more right about Mourinho. He has a short shelf life before people want him to leave. At times they did but it was not a concerted effort. Considering the talent on this team, I expect better.
  2. When I first started listening to jazz and I encountered Phil Schapp (as I was driving to work), he would say that modern listeners needed to train their mind so that they could hear the music apart from the scratches because that might be the only way they’d hear the music. Over the years, I’ve had some success with that approach but not always. I will purchase this set at some point but probably await until I’ve caught up with my listening or it goes on last chance, whichever comes first.
  3. I just watched the video. To describe their patter as idiotic would be an insult to idiots. Now, you know why Yahoo stock cratered and the company was sold for next to nothing.
  4. Disc 3. Not my favorite part of the set.
  5. Doug Ramsey posted this at Rifftides. “Nancy with the Laughing Face,” with Chick Corea, Ron Carter and Billy Cobham.
  6. Are you talking about the comments section? I find that where comments aren’t moderated, the comments tend to be useless and not worth reading. Certain parts of Twitter are worse.
  7. Disc 2. Well known understatement: he wa a gifted artist.
  8. I think there is truth to both of the above. The way Brasil played years ago and I mean years ago was artistic — o jogo bonito — but that’s not the way it’s played any more. It’s more of a European game, which is not always pretty, but effective.
  9. I thought it was an odd match. France has the ball only 36% but outshot Belgium something like 19-9. Belgium can’t be happy with themselves, obviously. Lukaku seemed out of sorts or didn’t anticipate the ball in certain situations.
  10. The half time stats favored Belgium. Of course, the only stat that matters is the score sheet.
  11. To die for!
  12. Belgium had some chances early and France later. Hard to see how this one will go.
  13. Jazz Profiles has posted an article about Bud Powell. As described by Steven Cerra of Jazz Profiles "What follows is an unedited compilation of writings on Bud Powell and his music by Bill Evans, Ted Gioia, Gary Giddins, Bob Blumenthal, Francis Paudras, Peter Pullman, Sebastian Scotney, Paul de Barros, Raymond Horricks, Ira Gitler, and Kenny Mathieson with my comments interspersed throughout the piece." Portrait of Bud Powell as Drawn from the Jazz Literature
  14. Amazon had it but I was able to find an inexpensively priced one on eBay.
  15. Scott, Florida is one state I can’t imagine living in full-time. Summers must be beastly. This week a friend of mine was trying to convince to move there. No way. We were thinking a few years about California but with the fires, the droughts and now the 100 degree plus weather, my wife says no way.
  16. It’s like they’re giving it away: here, listen to Errol Garner for free.
  17. When I lived in Madrid in the late 60s, they used to call the middle of July to the middle of August, “de virgen a virgen.” It was the hottest time of the year. You could only go out in the morning. The afternoons were insufferable.
  18. I don't know about OKC but on the Knicks he did his own thing. I tend to agree with Paul, but players don't pull crap with Lebron so maybe he's salvageable.
  19. I've listened through disc 2 and the John Kirby cuts are a revelation, the best so far (for me anyway).
  20. You need luck sometimes. As a famous baseball executive once said, “luck is the residue of design.”
  21. You have to feel bad for Russia.
  22. Brasil -- I mean Russia -- scores!
