The Birth of Bebop Scott Deveaux
Brad replied to fent99's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
The Proper Box is a very good intro to bop. I would also get ahold of Dizzy's Savoy box and if you want to go all out the Bird Dial Savoy box. 8 Cds but a must for a good collection. -
The recollection by his former student was very moving. Thanks for posting that.

What about the Quebec? That was reissued not long ago. Didn't pick it up since I had the Mosaic. I unloaded the Brooks LP Mosaic since I had all the CDs and they were more accessible.

I live in the NY area and have listened to Schaap a lot. Early on in my jazz life, I learned a lot from him but as I got more experienced, his talking does tend to get on the nerves, so much so that if I'm listening in the car, my wife will even wish that he moved on to the music. He's knowledgeable but a few savvy people have told me that you have to take what he says with a grain of salt.

This is terrible news. RIP and thanks. Two of my favorites at different stages in his career are A Long Tall Drink of the Blues and One Step Beyond. Very sad.

It's Jussieu Music. It was a great place with a friendly young man taking care of the jazz store. He is gone and so is the old friendly atmosphere. The people in charge of the jazz store are into their music and computer and don't seem to pay much attention to the customers. The selection nowadays is less impressive than it used to be! Bought a lot from the store. Not anymore Sorry for the misspelling Brownie. Too bad about the place. I also remember a place nearby up a slight hill but I went there on a Monday and it was closed. Any good?

You're wrong there. Mint doesn't mean never opened. It does mean like it came out of the factory but never opened (the cellophane still on the cds)? No way. Ha ha ha ! You're the one who sold it to me aren't you ?! No, just jivin' you man ! It's cool. Didn't mean to come too uppity on that on

If you look at the older links, there's a reference to a Jusseau Music. That's a place I like. Great selection and lots of used stuff. Easily accessible from the Metro.
-
Lon, All the best also. My best wishes. As to the Conns, I'll probably go for the Blackburn, Blakey and Evans as I've never heard them. Have the McLean and the other 2 don't really do it for me.

I think mid April.

The only proper name reference that I've seen is Charles Parker, Jr., which I suppose is not dispositive.

Kenny Dorham's Blue Lament. 1961 unissued BN session.

Wasn't that sort of the idea of the Lost Sessions, which, frankly, weren't all that great. -
Yes, like someone else said, my collection is better than I thought. I don't have anything by Sun Ra, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, Keith Jarrett but then they don't do anything for me so in that respect I don't have any holes. Would I like more of certain artists? Yes, definitely. But when you have about 1,500 Cds and almost 50 Mosaics how much and how much time do you have time to listen to everything?

Based on the above comments, this sounds like a mixed bag. While I would love more KD, if he's not at his best, maybe it's best to keep it hidden away. -
I had the box but sold it (did make burns however). I have listened to part of it but 18 CDs is a lot. If this new box is non jazz, I will pass.
-
One sick day? I took two last week because of the flu
-
When you need the cash, hard to beat that kind of money. I saw what those Vee Jays brought. Pretty tempting, if you can burn them. Been thinking about selling my Basie Roulette Live for the cash.
-
The question is why keep new cds? I'm selling off ones that I have and just burning them. Make a copy of the liner notes and you're all set. What's the difference for optics. About the only place I might not do that is Mosaics. Those are special but other than that a lot of time it's music on the go.

Anything from the 1960 Edition of the JMs, the greatest Blakey group.

Ordered four of these, skipping the trad jazz one and have the Perkins Cohn Kamuca cd. Was going to pass on the Lloyd but liked the sound bites.
-
Sound may not be pristine but hey it's Bud, what else do you need to know!
-
As I have all these, my wallet says thank you.

Not wishing to upscale on the ones I had, I'm getting the one I don't: Hawk and well, maybe the Burrell Coltrane.
