  1. Man, that's awful news. I, as many others, bought cds from him and although we did not talk much, I did enjoy our limited correspondence. I'm quite shocked to say the least. Very sad.
  2. I've got the CD issue of Lonely City so I'll do that one. It's almost done.
  3. Oh, yeah, you're right. B-)
  4. Well, I'll be 79 then so I better get ready.

It's all great man, but yeah, disc 2 is a great place. The Dinah Washington material on disc 5, 6 is pretty fabulous though. Do you have his BN and Pacific material. You should get that too.
  6. Happy Birthday Moose I celebrate by, what else, drinki a moosehead. Moooooooose!
  7. Too bad there's not a jazz equivalent.
  8. I'm sure it's omission but what about the Jazztet and the Granz sessions. Also not issued here but in Japan are the Bill Evans Village Vanguard sessions. Both fine. For a shorter version, California Here We Come should get special mention.
  9. Here's a little history of the Varitone. There doesn't appear to be too much on the web about them.
  10. I'm not sure I fully understand all this. Won't the computer, the iPod recognize that the tunes or the computer equivalent is not there and proceed to delete? Also a rather dumb question but under file of the C: drive is iTunes stored?
  11. Party Time, yes! I've been on an Arnett kick lately so definitely on More Party Time and Moving Right Along.
  12. Ok, I admit it. I'm really both Jim Sangrey and Chuck Nessa Have you thought of therapy? That's what this board is for!
  13. I'm not as expressive as Mr. Sangrey but obviously I disagree. From my point of view, the although the sound is changed, it's not for the better. Regarding what was going socially and politically, interesting theory, just a theory however. I don't see a bunch of other musicians who had as much to say as him feel they couldn't say it through their tenor or alto. I can dig the argument about wanting to say it louder since the idea was to go electric at the time. Witness the rhubarb when Dylan went electric. Perhaps that's the nub. Electric was fine but somehow the varitone didn't do the same for the sax as for the guitar. I hope you're not grouping me into that class of people who don't like organ since I'm a big fan of it. Also to bring up the "r" word for people who don't like organ (and there are many) is quite divisive to say the least. But I do see your point somewhat about the historical/social milieu since I grew up in the 60s. Although I may agree with what you have to say about liking/not liking the varitone, just because I understand the historical/social background doesn't make me like this gimmick any more. And it was a gimmick. I don't see that much of a benefit to it. And something having a benefit doesn't sell records. After a while he gave it up and returned to the alto/tenor where he made and had some big records. When people remember Sonny, it won't be for the varitone, thank goodness.
  14. Couldn't we compromise and have it in the middle?
  15. Ok, I admit it. I'm really both Jim Sangrey and Chuck Nessa
  16. Daniel, I was just observing about people who join but then never post, not even once. You're in the clear
  17. This strikes me as odd but we have 206 members who have never posted, not even once. Yes, that's correct, they joined but have never posted. I can understand that over time, you may get involved with other things and not have enough time to visit the Board but not posting once? It's unusual, to say the least.
  18. I asked my wife for the Morgenstern, new Shelock Holmes collection and Le Carre's Tinker, Taylor DVD (I've always loved LeCarre and wanted this one for years). Actually no CDs this year. I've gotten enough, thank you (for now anyway). World peace would be nice. How many more must die and not see another Christmas?
  19. Actually, it's a very good question which I don't have an answer for. It would be great if they were more available here. The only way I found out about the new Harold Mabern cd, for example, was that Harold mentioned it when I was talking to him after a recent gig here in Jersey. Frankly, the only way to keep up with what Venus is doing is to do a search on sites like HMV.
  20. Ah, with that post, now I understand why you need an external hard drive. If syncing is going on, it will mess up what you have on the ipod. Thanks John.
  21. Saw that too. I liked his comment about South of the Border: Nothing complicated but I like it. You don't necessarily have to do anything new or novel for it to be good and a classic.
  22. That makes sense. Any recs on an an external?
  23. Do you mean that the constant burning will or could eventually wear out the burner? As far as memory goes, once you've transferred it to the ipod, why not get rid it of it from itunes since we already have the cds.
  24. I live in the New York area so the two stations we have are WKCR (www.wkcr.org) and WBGO (www.wbgo.org). I'm grateful to have them both but WKCR is more professional. They also have the birthday broadcasts. You'll get a wider variety, including new groups and songs from WBGO but they play more straight ahead which is their motto. Through iTunes there are also some stations I like WKJZ and North Carolina State University jazz station.
  25. John, Thank you for the great post. Now I undestand why you might need an external hard drive. My computer is newer (early 2004) so I should be ok with the USB port. Awhile ago I had stored a bunch of cds on my computer at work through real player but they had to reinstall the hard drive at one point so I lost everything. Since it turned out that this was against company policy, it was no big deal but now I can bring the ipod to work with a lot more capacity to say the least. Can't wait for the morning.
