  1. Wish I were. Are you going to take photos?

Here's one more question. The battery seems to run out pretty fast. Is this normal. How many hours can one expect before it needs recharging?

    Grant and Wes

See, Garth, no brick a brats were hurled at you. When you say you have this guilty pleasure, this board is actually a lot more balanced than it was the old Blue Note board. Many (present company excluded) were not that kindly toward the OJC recordings and I remember on a Grant thread not one person sticking up for Wes. Yes, this is a different place now.

    Grant and Wes

I'm just not seeing this or feeling this about Wes. Maybe I'm missing something. I'm not a guitarist so I'm looking at this at more of a guttural level but Grant just moves me. I like Wes but not in the same way. It's like nice but I tend to reach more for Grant. I agree with b3-er but in reverse. I also think that Grant was playing this more like Bird on the guitar. I'm paraphrasing but I had read somewhere that Grant was trying to play the guitar like a horn, that he'd been influenced by Bird in that way. So he was approaching playing the guitar from a different direction.
  5. This is a crappy thread.
  6. Ditto on what Lon said. Didn't realize Allegro had dropped them.
  7. Sorry, didn't mean to insult you. Even with some things that I don't like, I try to keep an open mind about going back to them and trying to listen to them again to see if I was wrong. Sometimes I am and sometimes not. There's been a few things that when I listened to them again I said "hey, that's not bad." That's all I meant. No offense intended.
  8. take5, if you get everything everybody has been suggesting, you're going to be a rich man, but very poor financially .

    Grant and Wes

This was clearly not my intent although it may seem that way but why one seems to get more recognition than the other. I think Lon hit the nail on the head with Grant having a lot of soul. I just don't get that feeling from Wes. It Ain't Necessarily So stands out one of the most soulful and superb guitar performances I've ever heard.

    Grant and Wes

I was talking to a friend of my son's this past weekend. It seems he'd given up his business to study guitar and voice full time and he's now cutting a record. He mentioned to me that he was trying to do some jazz things on his disc and so we started talking about jazz. He mentioned that he'd listened to Wes quite a bit but when I asked him about Grant, I got a big questioning look. He'd said he'd heard of him but didn't know much about him and certainly never heard any of his music. This doesn't seem to be an atypical reaction. A lot of people seem to know Wes but not Grant or if they know them both, they certainly know Wes better. I'm not sure I understand why. The only reason that comes to me is that Grant's heyday was somewhat shorter than Wes' as Wes was operating from the mid to late 50s until 1968 whereas Grant made his mark from 1960 to 1965 (I don't see a lot of discussion about his later work). At any rate, I don't feel this oversight is warranted and while I enjoy both Wes and Grant, I prefer Grant.
  11. I can't think of anything to avoid in this group. I haven't done a comparison the two Parker Verve sets but if you want the alternative takes, then get the 10 cd set. The closest you're going to get to a Green set is their 4 cd retrospective which is a pretty good set IMHO. I've been listening to the Miles Prestige set and happen to like it. No problem with the sound. The only problem I have with this set (and I don't know if anybody else has this problem) is that it's damn hard to get the cases out of the box. It's a very tight fit. What are you getting of Dex's? If you can get the BN. It's oop but shows up on ebay a lot. I recommend the SteepleChase box. Then again I also recommend the other 2 that came out last year: the Select and Prestige. There is also the one Savoy put out which is really just a reissue of Jazz West Coast, three different cds. For early Dex, you should pick this up.

Couldn't run the clip at work but liked what I heard.
  13. That's very unfortunate. You are missing out on a genre of very fascinating music. how do I "miss out" on something I don't like? How about keeping an open mind?
  14. That's a little to expensive for these tastes.
  15. I don't see a price for this but I've got the feeling it's very expensive.
  16. Happy Birthday Matt . When you turn 34 will you change your name to mgraham334?

What is this Blue Note Perfect Takes? I note it's not issued by Blue Note by Angel.
  18. As someone who has been listening to jazz for less than 10 years (which I guess makes me a newbie in this thread), I generally subscribe to what wolff generally said. I know what I like and I don't like. However, critics do help and have helped to guide me, as Dan Morgenstern said. What he said about guiding the listener and to make the listener aware of what to listen for and why they're listening to is the essence of it all. I would also what they're listening as well. To guide is the most important. I think Larry does this well in his job and that is why I find liner notes and analyses (esp. of the Mosaic type) important. That is why I pay special attention to what he, Allen Lowe, Chuck and Jim S. have to say. The most important thing is not the what (that I can figure out myself) but the why and the context.
  19. Do you think I'd get special mention if I say I bought some cds from you once? It may not be spectacular to you Reinier but I'm impressed . Preordered this one also. There's no way like an expensive Mosaic to bring in the new year
  20. I can actually almost visualize Jimmy Rushing saying that.
  21. Yes, it's true that this could be said of many artists that after that intial burst of inventiveness they put it on automatic pilot or at least stopped taking chances. Not an apology but sometimes 85% of somebody (Bird, Bud, Sonny Stitt, etc.) is a lot better than 100% of others.

I have every one of these but this may as fine a reissue list as I've seen. I may upgrade on many of these however and ebay what I have.
  23. The Monk Black Lion/Vogue set. I've had this for years but barely listened to it (can't tell you why).
  24. Well, you only have to worry about the Mobley, Parlan, Joe Pass and Django sets since the rest are OOP and since only Mobley and Parlan are BN, you only have to worry about those two. I'd go for the Mobley if you don't have the individual albums.
