  1. David, Halfway through the post, I gave up on that idea . However, I do agree with Vibes. He really expresses my (and probably most of our) sentiments. Alexander, What did your therapist say. I'm curious, if it's ok to let us know.
  2. Only 34! Man, you've still got a lot of teeth to pull Have a good one. Don't splurge too much at Academy
  3. I'm guessing this is probably the point/joke. Well no one said I was ever the brightest bulb in the planet
  4. I guess I'm thick but can someone explain this to me because wasn't he a fairly obscure trombonist (I have to admit that I never heard of him until I saw his name here). Here's his AMG bio: The nickname of this trombonist, spun off of his surname, makes him sound like someone about to run amuck with a pair of scissors. Cutty Cutshall was armed with a trombone, however, and the main cutting he did was either besting other bonemen in jam sessions or simply making records. He evolved into one of the grand old men of the swing revival of the '60s and is on the list of journeymen musicians who passed away alone in their hotel rooms while on tour. Cutshall came out of the Pittsburgh music scene and was pulled away from that town in 1934 to tour with Charley Dornberger. The trombonist worked for two years with Jan Savitt beginning in 1938, then was in and out of the Benny Goodman band through the first half of the '40s, at one point pressed into service by the American military. In the late '40s he was a regular collaborator with Billy Butterfield but also skimmed the New York City freelance cream, filling up several pitchers with discographical entries. By 1949 he had begun a long term relationship with Eddie Condon, whose work in the name of swing included not only bandleading but running a club in which he ruled the bandstand. Cutshall toured England with Condon in 1957; he was also with Condon in the thick of a stint at Toronto's Colonial Tavern at the time of his death. The trombonist also performed and recorded with clarinetist Peanuts Hucko, singers Bob Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald and the great Louis Armstrong during a contract with the Decca label.
  5. Hans (J.A.W.) is correct because when I looked at the website yesterday evening, Audio Park doesn't take paypal whereas Hiroshi does. This cd does look like it won't be cheap, however, $25.
  6. Al, Is it too late to sign up?
  7. I've been a little tardy in reading this but I've just finished the Dizzy Gillespie article. The only thing I can say is that you know how to write because there is some beautiful expressive writing. I skipped ahead to the Sonny Stitt article and what you wrote really summarizes Sonny. This and the Morgenstern book are required reading. I hope your father is getting better.
  8. Ahh, tongue in cheek. Probably that's where Dex's would have been if he had played it 50 times in a row.
  9. Hans, Quite interesting but I think as you noted in your review this has been reissued and is available from other sources. I know the Chubby Jackson material, for instance, is available on a Cool 'n Blue Cd of Chubby's. And as you indicated the Serge Chaloff material is on the Mosaic. However, the more interesting might be the clarinet cd. Has any of that been reissued or is this a first?
  10. I can't think of 5 off the top of my head but one that made me very happy was getting Dizzy's Verve Big Band sessions, a double cd. Very, very nice.
  11. I'll let Dan do most of the recommending but I'd start with Moods (his avatar).
  12. Yes, fortunately, I had sold a bunch of items on ebay, including cds. That is the only way I could do this.
  13. I am without a doubt a Jazz-aholic. I usually buy a normal amount of cds but lately I've been on a binge and just like alcoholics I can't kick the jazz buying habit. Here's the haul: On Monday I received a Beehive LP from Euclid, which was followed the same day by a Pepper Adams cd I purchased on ebay. Then on Tuesday, I received three cds I ordered from the Groove. Yesterday I was in the City on a seminar and before I left I stopped at Academy Records and picked up 8 cds (although I'll probably sell a couple of them). Today I received 3 cds I bought from a board member. Over the next week I'm expecting 3cd each that I bought from two board members, plus 4 other Uptown cds that I ordered from Chuck. I also am awaiting two cds of Harold Mabern that I bought on Ebay. Count = 1 LP and 27 cds. That is a huge number. I should stop. Trouble is I don't know if I should or want to . Other tales of woe (or happiness ), please post here.
  14. Did you guys get me any . Come on, man!

    Art Farmer

All the Argos (on the Mosaic) are fine, better than that. There's also some good ones on Prestige like Farmer's Market with Gigi Gryce and When Farmer Met Gryce.
  16. I don't mean this criticism but Dexter considered Go a classic but I know other listeners don't necessarily feel the same way. Blue Note put out a two cd set called The Classic Blue Note Recordings, Blue Note 80658 (catalogue number 73243 5 80658 2 4). That will give you a taste of Blue Note Dexter. You may also want to check out some of his SteepleChase work, mostly live but good nonetheless. But you may want to start with The Classic Blue Note recordings. It's quite a handy two cd set.
  17. Any one of those looks like a strong enough opponent. It depends on the class of goods in which they're registered. You can have many people use the same name but if they register in a different class of goods, there's no infringement and hence no possible chance of confusion.
  18. What about the Three Sounds stuff or do you already have that. If not, let me know and I'll see if I can help. BTW, I think Michael C. is planning to reisse a Three Sounds cd sometime in the near future.
  19. Happy Birthday David. You've got one cool show
  20. Don, Thanks. Go ahead and send more. If you want to email me, my email is lewinb@wyeth.com Also is that Mercantville or Merchantville?
  21. Ya know everything loooooks great here but the Columbia and Verve/Mercury/Clef sets look like they're going to be outstanding.
  22. I just received this a few minutes ago as well and the only thing I can say is that I hope I get a good bonus in January because there's nothing on here that I don't want to buy It looks the Perkins session was previously on the Pepper lp box but it's good to have it in cd.
  23. My thoughts exactly. I imagined that if I closed my eyes I might be listening to Dex.
  24. We Three is on ebay for a buck right now. Man, you can't go wrong there.
  25. Food was great. It was certainly kind of weird with him that he didn't connect. In fact he didn't even really try to connect. When he could have done so, he would look off into the distance. At first I thought he was being smug but I guess that's just his style. He was certainly into his music, that's for sure.
