  1. Miles was always into change so it's no surprise that he kept changing. He got rid of Philly Joe, didn't he? Regaring Wesbed's comments about Evans being better than Red, you can't compare them. They're so different. As for the ludicrous comment about Evans being overrated, that's just...ludicrous in my book.
  2. I'd suggest a different tack on Miles. Why not listen to some early Miles when he was getting his act together with Charlie Parker. He takes some good solos on these sides and he even had his first leader session for Savoy while with Bird (who's on tenor). I think this was more of a way for Savoy to record Bird without Bird having to pay royalties to Dial, which gets me why don't you get Bird Savoy/Dial sessions. Even if you don't love anything, there's lot of Miles, it's a great introduction to both Bird and Bop (although that's probably synonomous).
  3. Metronome magazine collaborated with several labels, I remember Capitol (Cuscuna included some on the CD Birth of the Cool Vol. 2. Having them all in one package regardless of the label would really be a perfect fit for Mosaic. Unfortunately, based on what I've been able to find out, there's not enough there for a Mosaic. The Metronome All Stars recorded between 1939 and 1961 and usually they only recorded a couple of songs a year, at least in their heyday. There are basically four lps and one cd that contain Metronome materia. There is the Bluebird (RCA) cd that contains 15 cuts between 1939 and 1950 (including the famed Overtime and Victory Ball) and some of these are alternate takes. There is a Tax lp, which contains the Columbia sessions for 1940, 1941, 1942, 1946 and 1950. The Camden lp is the RCA material on the cd and there is a Clef lp of the 1956 All Stars which has 6 songs. A search turned up this CD. Since the Bluebird is OOP, this is probably worth getting. I'm not even sure there's enough there for a Select.
  4. I don't know when this was released but I definitely vote for the Latin Bit. Really fine album.
  5. Wow! That's a hell of an improvements. Hat off to them.
  6. I guess it wasn't important to mention but he's also done tons of liner notes. I most recently ran into one of his liner notes for Kenny Burrell's Bluesy Burrell, originally issued for Moodsville, and reissued in 1997 by Fantasy, where Chris supplemented Robert Levin's original notes. Great disc by the way.
  7. I'm going to plead ignorance here but I'm not familiar with Bagatellen. Does it just cover jazz and (does it cover all kinds of jazz) and how do I subscribe?
  8. It would be interesting to see who voted no or yes, my theory being that most nos have big post counts and vice versa. For the record, I voted no, I think.
  9. I'm waiting for this too but since I coupled the order with the new Bud Powell cd I won't get it until sometime next week. Regading the Metronome All Stars, I don't know if there's enough there for a Mosaic or even a Select. I have a Bluebird cd and an LP that has some of the same material as the CD and I think it covers most of 1940-1949.
  10. I've noticed from a couple of ebay auctions that they're ripping off certain Blue Notes like Modern Art and a Hank Mobley session with Lee Morgan (which they're publicizing as a Lee Morgan title).
  11. Email sent!
  12. I've tried this too (I thought it was Lon's suggestion originally) but I have been lazy to change it back. At any rate, JRVGs by and large tend to be good although there are a few clunkers like Blakey's Night in Tunisia. However, I think the US RVGs are good too so I wouldn't go out and blow a big wad if you can get the US ones.
  13. Never had that happen with a Mosaic but it's happened with ebay items and I've always (happened twice) sent the items to the right person after consulting with the seller.

Is someone going to do a master thread like Mike has done for BTF? I'm willing to do it if no one steps forward
  15. Actually, the rule is 7700 posts. Aw, shucks you're just under that. Bummer
  16. Perhaps Chuck was right, maybe not. However, I think what elicited the reaction was how he it said it. But that's just Chuck. However, Mr. Mingus doesn't know Chuck (not that I profess to, just his style). I don't think we would have had 4 pages had Chuck made the above statement originally. Anyway, although it was a rough introduction, the more members the better and I hope you stick around.
  17. This is an open forum. There's very few rules here, other than registering and you like jazz. It's not a private club and so if some guy wants to register for the purpose of trading his Mosaic. What's the big deal. He obviously knows Mosaic and what he would like to get so he's got bona fides. He probably saw as fellow jazz brothers. I wasn't offended but I don't think Chuck's reaction was very welcoming. I'd get pissed off also. Did Chuck wake up on the wrong side of the bed today? As usual, we've wasted some cyberspace over a lot to do about nothing.
  18. Nice, just set it as my background, until the corporate gnomes get rid of it.
  19. How about a suggestion for the Bush inauguration costume?
  20. All the Bill Evans material that they've put out in the last couple of years is fantastic sounding as is the Monk material. I try to pick up all these K-2s.
  21. I kind of like the idea almost more so than the BFT just because it doesn't get us into the arcane plus you're giving the potential listeneners what kind of music they're getting into. It's sort of a combinatio of the AOTW and BFTs.
  22. I think this offends family values
  23. For the holidays could you change your signon to "JazzBlitzen," JM? Hey, no stealing my avatar What about 3 Kings Day, January 6. That's a nice day.
