Caiman.com on amazon Suspect cdrs sold as new.
robviti replied to Jazztropic's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I can see that. Still, what happened to me recently was that Caiman suddenly listed an item (on Amazon Marketplace UK as it were) which had previously not been available. Suddenly Caiman indicated it as "in stock" (which of course it wasn't, as they have no stock). So how do they suddenly decide that they will be able to get an item? In the end, it costed me a dollar because of the varying exchange rates so it was no big deal, but still... perhaps caiman's distributors/warehouses list a title as in stock, but when it comes time to pull it for a sale, it isn't on the shelf. later, the distributor lists it as being available, and caiman naturally relists it. i agree it can be frustrating. regardless of where i am or what i'm buying, when the salesperson says: "it shows we have one (or even two) in stock," i hold my breath and hope, since inventory systems are rarely exact. an outfit as huge as caiman is bound to have this kind of problem in spades. that being said, i don't ever order out-of-print titles from them. i have enough disappointment and rejection in my love life. p.s. :tup -

From the Economist: The Case for Death Duties
robviti replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
my father is first generation italian american, one of 13 children. he fought in WWII, bought a gas station and fixed junk cars until he got a rambler dealership. he worked his ass off all his life to provide for his family, and he did quite well. he's paid taxes on all of his earnings for 65 years. he employed many workers over the years (who also pay taxes), paying half their social security taxes and contributing toward their retirement. so when he dies, the federal and state governments feel they have the right to take 50% of what's left, money that he already paid taxes on? he has to pay a "death duty" to prevent creating a dynasty of the idle rich? fuck that! because my father did well, i was able to go to grad school and become a psychologist who works for less than $40,000 a year helping people with little or no money. my brother is a librarian and is very involved in local church and civic activities. there's no idleness in my family, and i resent the idea that my dad's money might go to fund the war, subsidize tax breaks for corporations, or prop up some politically corrupt venture. you want to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor? provide real opportunities for people's health, education, job training, career guidance, and retirement investments. -

Buying OOP used vinyl vs. download of same
robviti replied to six string's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
what about the idea of supporting your local record store when it comes to buying used vinyl/cds versus downloading? i know the number of brick-and-mortars is dwindling fast, but while they're still around they deserve our consideration. -
i didn't know that goulet appeared in a funny emerald nuts commercial that originally aired during last year's superbowl. check it out:

this is a hot, but hardly new, debate, and it's interesting to read members' reactions to this rather flimsy article that's three years old. when i was in grad school, a woman in my abnormal psychology course claimed: van gogh would not have been van gogh had he not been mad! this assertion inflamed me (owing in no small part to the fact that i didn't like this windbag). anyway, i decided then and there to write my final paper on creativity and madness. coincidentally, i used schumann as my main case study. it was very enlightening research as it helped me understand how mental illness has been diagnosed and treated (or mistreated as the case may be) over the centuries. additionally, i learned how the concepts of creativity and genius have also changed dramatically over time. i believe this fact is very relevant to this discussion, and yet few authors address this issue in their arguments. there are scores of books on this subject, including Touched with Fire by Kay Redfield Jamison, a psychiatrist who has bipolar disorder. there's even a creativity and madness conference held in santa fe every year! please keep in mind that many professionals who explore, write, and talk about the possible connections between creativity and mental illness do so because they want to help the general population understand that the mentally ill are real and sometimes extraordinary people. although this hidden agenda can influence their argument, it isn't a bad goal, is it?

okay, maybe my subtitle was a bit over the top. when i read the article, i was pleased to see that a character who is powerful, intelligent, honorable, and kind - a character who is beloved by tens of millions of readers - is homosexual. his sexuality is not a big part of the overall plot, but it is significant in that it helps explain a pivotal relationship in his past that altered his life and came to have an impact on the rest of the wizarding world. rowling's disclosure wasn't grandstanding, it was a gesture that helped make dumbledore, a character shrouded in mystery, more understandable, more human to her readers. closets are for clothes, not people.

as of last july, that figure was roughly 59,420,018 people.

J.K. Rowling outs Hogwarts character By Hillel Italie, AP National Writer | October 20, 2007 NEW YORK --Harry Potter fans, the rumors are true: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay. J.K. Rowling, author of the mega-selling fantasy series that ended last summer, outed the beloved character Friday night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall. After reading briefly from the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," she took questions from audience members. She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love." "Dumbledore is gay," the author responded to gasps and applause. She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. "Falling in love can blind us to an extent," Rowling said of Dumbledore's feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down." Dumbledore's love, she observed, was his "great tragedy." "Oh, my god," Rowling concluded with a laugh, "the fan fiction." Potter readers on fan sites and elsewhere on the Internet have speculated on the sexuality of Dumbledore, noting that he has no close relationship with women and a mysterious, troubled past. And explicit scenes with Dumbledore already have appeared in fan fiction. Rowling told the audience that while working on the planned sixth Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," she spotted a reference in the script to a girl who once was of interest to Dumbledore. A note was duly passed to director David Yates, revealing the truth about her character. Rowling, finishing a brief "Open Book Tour" of the United States, her first tour here since 2000, also said that she regarded her Potter books as a "prolonged argument for tolerance" and urged her fans to "question authority." Not everyone likes her work, Rowling said, likely referring to Christian groups that have alleged the books promote witchcraft. Her news about Dumbledore, she said, will give them one more reason. The first one of you that makes a pedophile joke is going to get an Avada Kedavra curse hurled at his head, so watch it.

has anyone thought of applying a matte spray varnish or lacquer to their rusted box to preserve its current state? i mention this because it seems to be an accepted method of treating/preserving rusted artifacts.

many owner's manuals are available online. you could download them and save them on your hard drive or on the removable storage device of your choice. if you have a scanner, you can save bills, receipts, and manuals in a similar fashion.
