    Gary Burton

Originally on Vault, I see...https://www.discogs.com/Larry-Bunker-Quartette-Featuring-Gary-Burton-Live-At-Shellys-Manne-Hole/master/809584 Recorded earlier than 1967, read the liner notes. I'll always give Larry Bunker a fair listen. That guy could play. And did!
  2. I dunno man, the older I get, the longer I live...
  3. Well...only if we define "funky music" as any and all music to which "black people" have, do, and will dance...otherwise I don't see how that's a forgone conclusion into eternity. What happens when we get all into cloning and interplanetary colonization and conquering peoples and genetic machinations and all that stuff? This game ain't over, these battles is not over, which is one more reason to call bullshit everywhere and know as many true facts as possible. Sir Nose ain't dead yet...
  4. You can dance to damn near anything if it's what you want to dance to.
  5. I think the Pettiford is the Birdlanders(?) that has been on Period/Everest/etc. or related to it anyway.
  6. and a drummer's dream - max, elvin, tootie, louis hayes, no more, no less.
  7. more than 30 years too late to be of any real use to me, not that I've ever lived in Berkley, but still.. They should at least offer gatefold LP jackets as an accessory. talk about an opportunity missed...
  8. Sounds like he's blind to the fact that film "soundtracks" became the new source for hits, until they didn't. He's talking about an art in terms of the industry around it, which seems like asking Peter to pay Paul to call Mary, or whatever that expression is. No matter, as even an amateur electrician can tell you, connecting two loose ends does not in and of itself make a circuit.
  9. whoa...talk about draining the swamp...that swamp is damn near turned into desert...even the dead fish have been picked clean.
  10. See, if you would have been in America during this time, I'd have to say, geez, that's a pretty random, one might even say dumb, decision, why didn't you just listen to the black radio stations? But I get it, because of the BBC, y'all didn't have any black radio, right? So you had to fend for yourself, do your own math, I totally get it. Lsiten outside that one box and go from there. But Americans and other citizens of the world today - use your radios! Realize that if you hear a station playing songs sung in Spanish, it might well be a completely different type of music than the next on, and/or the one(s) after that. Listen to a language that sounds like "Asian" long enough to find out if they play music, or if it's just a talking community service talk format and/or an evangelical infomercial of one kind or another. Listen to some Bollywood, old and/or new, there's a BIG evolution there, the more things change, etc. and learn to love microtones in your pop culture that are intentional and highly controlled. Radio today is sorely lacking in some ways (i.e. - black pre hip-hop R&B, rural classic C&W pre-Urban Cowboy, modern classical, any kind of African) there's more, probably). But DO NOT GET BBC-ed! As you can see here, as a service, they deliver admirably, but as a provider, they're not going to do your exploring for you, are they, right? Just sayin' - your curiosity is on you. Use it or lose it.
  11. Nobody's mentioned Harvey Mason yet?
  12. Please, by all means, do! Tell her she's got two big fans in Texas, and that we appreciate everything about the show the dryness of the humor, the ongoing development of the characters, as well as the cleverness of the individual plots. For our money ($5.00/month!) it's a TOTAL winner! And the scenery...my wife has always wanted to visit Canada, and this show just stokes the fever. I already have, and would gladly make a return visit.
  13. KD HATED Cecil. The other guys, not so much. IIRC, there was a thing on Wolfgang's of Bill Barron playing with Cecil that is A-OK. Bill Barron had a great musical mind, maybe a great mind period, all I can vouch for is his musical mind, though. So where's that Mosaic gonna happen?
  14. I gave up on Daedelus years ago, once their jazz selection was overtaken by the cheapest of the EuroMusiPorn stuff. I keep waiting for them to turn that around, but I'm in no hurry. Will keep an eye on Ernie's to see how he does.
  15. Currently enjoying Season 11(?) on Acorn TV via amazon Prime. New episodes every Monday! Have to say, the show is staying fresh, quite a trick, imo, right up there with Perry Mason in terms of they're all the same, they're all different, they're all fun to watch.
  16. Didn't Stan Kenton win a Grammy for his WSS album?
  17. Their jazz inventory is reminiscent of Daedalus' back in the day. Any connection? Is Daedalus still in business?
  18. Oh, West Side Story. Standards aplenty out of that one, although not many of them except "Maria" worth a damn. But didn't Trini Lopez have a hit with "America"? Or was that just on his Fresca record?

  22. i need money and time. when it's there, so will i.
  23. Or maybe it was because Julie Andrew was on a BIG winning streak when Sound Of Music hit the screen and by then the OC was already well known from radio, tv, school choirs, you name it, those songs were already known but yeah, for sure, more people go to the movies than do plays, every town has a movie house in those days, it was a case of momentum momentum momentum, is there a real point here? Me, I'm not a fan of the show, the movie, the songs, none of it. But god if it wasn't forced on me for god knows how many years, even by Our One Lord & True Savior John Coltrane.
  24. Looks like mine has as well, and at the originally offered price. Vive la france!
  25. Maybe Elmo Hope will be our 21st Century Herbie Nichols. Or maybe not. Either way, this guy generally did not write simple "blowing" tunes. Seems like some sort of "reclamation project" could be had if there was an appetite, plenty of meat there.
