Those early Wynton tunes were kind of interesting, I tried to get a few people to play them, but nobody here wanted to (then again, a lot of people here then wanted to play either all original or all established, very little interest in other people's new tunes, very little, you gotta way for somebody else to "give it the ok". I suppose, by which time, gee, why wait?), and then their moment passed, Wynton turned into Evil Jazz Dick, and then, who cared? was even less. Really, what they are is a formalized codification of the 60s Miles band's devices, but at the time the 60s Miles band hadn't become the Archetype that it since did. So, yeah, there will likely be some "good" stuff played, but, hey, good for that then, I caught it first time around, and it was old-fashioned but "fresh" to the general audience then. Now, it's just old-fashioned. Hell, I had some hopes for it as a "direction" until it actually became one. Then it was like oh....my.....god....NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! The moral of the story - you can rebuild Humpty Dumpty, but you can't put him back together again. So, proceed accordingly, and preferably with fresh eggs.

Heard a quickly passing, almost under the radar "wink-wink" reference to "the Lane Bryant catalog" on some sitcom last week, thought to myself ok, this is trending mainstream, so, let's see.

Kind of Blue Question for Members Who Were There At the Time

Am I correct in thinking that Bitches Brew went gold before (and much quicker) than did Kind Of Blue? -
76 yesterday, currently 19, predicted overnight low of 11, about a quarter-inch of ice fell this afternoon. But forecast to be in the 70s <10 days. So, no sense to fold up those swimsuits just yet.

Vaguely familiar with Arthur Russell...more familiar with Arthur Baker. YouTube research for Russell has me hearing him as maybe part of the "No Wave" scene, same vibe as James Chance/White, and some of the Ze Records crowd? Disco as conceptual music, not dance music, first? I had started moving out of an "active" interest in Disco around the time that scene came around, but what I got of it was interesting...haven't really revisited or re-investigated, though. -
I had general knowledge that Toni Basil had had some kind of a career as a choreographer prior to "Micky", but had no idea what kind...so, I'm watching The T.A.M.I. Show last night & noticed that Toni Basil was Assistant Choreographer. And according to this http://madamepickwickartblog.com/2012/02/semina-culture/ she and Terri Garr were some kind of cutting edge dancers on the L.A. scene of the time (and both can be seen in The T.A.M.I. Show as well). This is pretty interesting too:

How do we know who was tripping, and when? It's possible that Trane was tripping on Interstellar Space, same as he was on Om, the whole "that was the only time" thing can just as likely be PR as truth, and that we have one masterpiece and one novelty, which proves nothing except that some days (and some trips) are better than others? So what do we know? That people were dropping acid in the 1960s? That a LOT of people were dropping acid in the 60s? That genius always goes its own way? That some people were crazy anyway? That LSD has no fixed set of responses? What do we know here, and what conclusions are we trying to draw in spite of it? Tell you what, take Side One of East Broadway Rundown, play it loud and freak dance all the way through it. There's some psychedelic jazz right there, but afaik, no LSD was involved.

The two Andrew Hill sides from this period are very good as well. Good to see at least one of them being restored to circulation.

LSD? You mean the Mormons? I think they're called LDS. LSD is a drug.

Did you catch Terry Hinte from Fantasy Records? Sylvester's big hit "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" was on Fantasy. People think they made all their money off of CCR and then just lived off of that to do jazz, but no! Their was a whole sub-culture of funky/disco-y music on Fantasy going on the the 70 as well, and with that one Sylvester thing, they had a hit. Maybe not a huge national "breakout" hit, maybe a somewhat "underground" hit (people forget how disco was underground before Travolta & Bee-Gees exploded it out, and the best - yes, there is such a thing as really good disco music - remained underground, too hardcore for pop, it was) but still, definitely a hit. So there was some money coming in from that as well as from all the McCoy Tyner records and 24000 2-fers. Who knows, maybe Sylvester's sales funded the launch of the OJC line? Or maybe not, but the point is just that he brought the label income, that much you can be assured of. -

Why not? Sylvester had chops, and his impact on today's world-at-large is probably exponentially larger than Oliver Nelson's. I'd think one would want to at least know. Knowing his music need not translate into liking it, but...I think he should be known as a musical talent and as a cultural figure. In some ways, this guy was Prince before there was Prince (and Little Richard after there was Little Richard, etc. this guy did not exist in a total vacuum)...and in other ways, lots of other ways, he wasn't. But I can tell you that when Prince first started hitting, comparisons to Sylvester were not uncommon. Prinve eventually (soon, really) showed a much broader skill set and palate, but still, Sylvester had already gotten to at least some of there, and people who knew noticed. in terms of moving the bar culturally, Sylvester mattered. And as a singer, most of us wish that today's pop/R*B singers had half (or even some) of the skills this guy did. Now when it comes time to choose between Oliver Nelson & Sylvester, I'm going with Oliver far more often than not. But I will listen to some Sylvester from time to time, yep. . -

Sylvester? A wholly unique talent, an incredible voice with an even more incredible falsetto, never really fully crossed over because of his...."flamboyance". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oigd_qs4rNY -

Well, hey, this actually worked. They picked up on the second ring, told me it was a known issue discovered about three weeks ago, that repressings of the defective disc are in the pipeline, and what's your mailing information, we'll get that to you as soon as they come in. So - so far, so good. I guess the repressings came in, because I got one in the mail this week. Hooray for phone! -

Understand the collective distrust of tripe, but don't share it...when it comes to gelatinous flavor delivery systems, it's a darn good'un, at least for my tastes. It and tendon. Another worst thing for me...Chester's Fried Chicken in Hillsboro, Texas. Chicken so bad I couldn't give it away to the vanload of blues musicians with whom I was riding. Learned lesson - if something sucks so bad you can't wait to be shut of it, DON'T proclaim to all within earshot that this is the nastiest tasting shit you ever ate. Odds of successful transfer are significantly reduced when you say that, especially repeatedly.
