  1. Nobody else for In the World? I beg to differ, then!
  2. The Astros have the best record in baseball now + Rick Ankiel is Triple Crown...sure that wasn't an exhibition? An April Fool's joke from tomorrow that wormholed it here a day early? Season not real until thread exists here. Matt Harrison & I would agree on this.
  3. No 2013 season thread yet, so....that game I just watched was actually an exhibition? Yes? Please?
  4. Madame Bovary Madame Butterfly Herbie Hancock

    Buzz Gardner

    Same guy.
  6. Oh yeah, this new Wilbur Ware thing, Clifford, yes, very nice.
  7. I will say that besides creating a music that damn near compels you to follow along as the logic unfolds, the momentum gathers, the energies coalesce even tighter, and you eventually "get there" (where indeed you always were from the first note), all at a pace that is deliberately deliberate, playing the gambit that yes, this is RIGHT (and indeed, it always is), Roscoe Mitchell is a very visually compelling artist as well. I've never been in a position to really observe his posture, horn-holding positions, body movement, and footwork before last night, but there was a body-dimension at work that was nothing short of being as musical as the music. Nothing overtly "showy" or anything, just...there. And the guy knows how to wear a tie, let me tell you that.
  8. And to be clear, if need be, he was being used as a engineer in his own studio then, not as a producer. I've enjoyed a fair number of hip "pop" productions, though, Very well done and well-thought out, not too dissimilar from Creed Taylor's concepts. I'd be surpassed if there wasn't at least some "influence" of Taylor on Ramone at some point.
  9. Check AMG. He was often used by Creed Taylor for Verve dates. http://www.allmusic.com/artist/phil-ramone-mn0000334243
  10. Yes, strongly advised to use the little snowflake-looking Advanced Search Thingy (just to the right of the magnifying glass) to initiate any search.
  11. Yes to all that. Just took a few hours to eliminate several decades of bad feelings about Houston. Roscoe is indeed a Miracle Worker!
  12. Huge Clifford Jordan love here. In the World.
  13. No, not that at all. Just that this is a good time for each to partner in this way, they're both established, they both are known to be "free thinkers", and there's no real risk involved for either. What there is is a market freedom borne of success and stability, which is one reason I'm not automatically down on cats who seek success and stability. Risk is cool, and so is freedom, but sometimes those two happen independently of/parallel to each other, and sometimes they actually get in the way of each other.
  14. All I can say is that I heard The Delfonics in real time, and as a result, this is some of the most purely weird music I have ever heard. People talking about Metheny/Zorn like WOW, didn't see THAT one coming! and no, but not surprising, and probably won't be disorient you, hey did I just have a concussion and not ever going to recover weird the way that this is. I get that it might be satire/dark humor at some The Weeknd-esque level, and possibly bullshit as well. And I do get that maybe having heard The Delfonics in real time sets me up for this the way that somebody who's always known them as Oldie Music wouldn't be. But I'm not talking that, I'm talking undressing Minnie Ripperton to find out that she's got two dicks, one for you and one for her and you don't want that but wow, not your call now that you got her undressed, you SURE as hell didn't see that one coming, and even if it is a dream, ain't no waking up from THAT one, upsetting weird. This isn't "updating a classic sound" or anything like that. This is molesting it with a willing adult participant being the one getting molested. Not sure if it's healthy, not sure if I should be watching, but eyes once opened can never be shut again, that type thing.

    Grant Green

Grant's one of those guys onto whom you can project any and all of your own personal attitudes, pleasures, hangups, kinks, thrills, etc. and make it work. That's true of most Dead Heroes, but with Grant, you really don't have to work very hard. Whatever you want/need to hear, it's there. Right there. In that regard, I'm kinda like, if you yourself don't dig Grant Green, it ain't Grant Green's fault for being so fully Grant Green, so yeah Grant Green wins at life afaic.
  16. Hell, in Mingus' mind, he's probably all I punch guys, that's Part Of What I Do, so for me to NOT punch you out because you're blind, hey, that's me thinking of you as just Part Of A Man, an a Big Part of who I am is based on anger and not being viewed as a Whole Man, so how can I treat you like less than a Whole Man and still hold my dignity and you yours? You mightbe Blind but you're still a Whole MAn, right? And if not, WTF you doing in MY band? So, yeah, crazy, but in its own way, right as far as it goes, even it that Far is Very Little Far. But you know it and I know it - these men were not like you and me. Sometimes that causes me to be humbled, sometimes humiliated, sometimes befuddled, sometimes distraught, sometime elated (for them), but very seldom can I say, hey, you guys GOT this, leave me out of it. Just leave me out of it. This would one of those times, though. But still, the story has been related. The information must be processed. A new responsibility is incurred, to figure out WTF? How 'bout that, eh?
  17. Oh, it violates every rule of decency. But a blind man had never been in a fight? Sure about that? FWIW, a source I trust told me that they walked into a men's room, and there was Kirk sitting on a toilet, taking a shit, door wide open, daily newspaper wide open, talking to somebody about something in the paper. I have3 zero reason to doubt the source, even though the story itself begs to be disbelieved. But... So yeah, any normal guy going at it like that with a normal blind guy, sure, that's fucked. But Mingus was not a normal guy, and Kirk was not a normal blind guy. It's still probably fucked, but since I really don't understand the world(s) that either guy lived in, hey, I like it at the level I like it at and make no claim beyond that. But have you heard the stories about Ray Charles driving? They are legion enough that I believe them. So if Ray Charles is getting a ticket for going 70 in a 30, does he get a pass because he couldn't see the speed limit sign? Or what? I mean, these are questions that we'd like to think that shouldn't even have to be asked, but there's enough of those type questions that after a while, hey, maybe yes they should be. Don't ask me what the right answers wre though, because they will be based on the premise that they shouldn't be, and oops, here we nevertheless are. And consider this, as long as we're asking questions, who all was it who actually blindfolded Mingus, drew the shades, and turned out the lights?
  18. And it's also not true that Teo put together all those live bootleg tapes that show that band in totally kickingass mode. But I like that Mingus called Kirk's bluff on the blind card. That's why Kirk was the sideman in Mingus' band, but Mingus never a sideman in Kirk's. I mean, on a "common decency" level, that's some fucked up shit, but on an "ok motherfucker, what's your excuse NOW?" level, that is pretty hardcore real.
  19. Zorn & Metheny are at this point both established business entities of not-wholly-incompatible interests, so this would be what the business-heads like to call a "synergy".
  20. Not sure why this would be thought of as a joke, although each guy's "quotes" reek of Stale PR Urine. But as far as Metheny & Zorn having a serious collaboration, yeah, sure, why not? Both guys are serious musicians with wide-ranging interests, never mind what kind of records they "typically" make.
  21. Solved? I'd say that Miles figured it out, nothing left for him to solve. Everybody else, though, they at least had to think it over, same as with Bird & Trane. Wow. This is like reading a boxing report. RRK took him in the fourth, RRK KO'D him in the seventh, RRK won by technical knockout in the tenth, RRK's 'opponent(s) threw in the towel in the twelfth, RRK in a special promotional match with a woman, ripped her bleedin head off... what a load of shit. Where's Celebrity Death Match when you really need it?
  22. THE JAZZ GIANTS Dudu Pukwana - alto sax Goodman "Tete" Mbambisa - piano Martin Mgijima - bass Early Mabuza - drums Nick Moyake - tenor sax Elija Nkwayane - trumpet And that explains everything, then. Jazz is probably more "African" than it is anything else, but "African"is not "jazz", any more than a root is an apple. These guys are having to "guess" at where the "blue notes" are, just because the African-American Experience ended up moving them in a different place than they were in the Motherland (never mind were they "blue" in the first place?). But never - never, NEVER, would I think that these players were "white" or any other kind of "European", for no other reason than the odds would overwhelmingly have those guys putting them in the right place but not really "knowing" why they went there. Going forth, all such bets are incrementally but increasingly off. But this was 1962, so, different...everything. Wow. Fascinating cut.
  23. http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/17811-the-delfonics-adrian-younge-presents-the-delfonics/ I'll better be able to know what I think/feel about it when I get over just how left-field WEIRD the whole thing is. The above reviewer references Tarrantino, but David Lynch is more accurate. Yeah, a Defhonics album with only one of the Delfonics singing (albeit often overdubbed) and songs/productions that are equal parts Dark/Suicidal Sweet Soul, Bad Trip Sunshine Pop, and Raphael Saadiq on a lude-fueled acid trip. Even if it really sucks (and again, as of now I have no idea if it does or not, the shock is nowhere close to wearing off), it's going to be one big fun figuring that out, Consider this equal parts Recommendation & Warning, and maybe that's the best combination of all?
