  1. I dig it...and it's got Marvin Cabell...but it's Creed Taylor/Kudu, meaning that it's not aimed so much for the "jazz audience" if you know what I mean. But it does have a groove, and it does have Marvin Cabell, so that's good enough for me. Your milaeage may vary.
  2. Up again...the more years pass, the more awesome this thing gets.
  3. That IS Darrin's mom, Mabel Anderson! http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=6643357 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mabel_Albertson
  4. Is that her who played Darren Stevens' mother on Bewitched?
  5. Sometimes, yes, for differing reasons. But overall, not as much as it used to.

  9. Good goddamighty!
  10. You ever notice how Harold Land with a tenor in his mouth looks like Smokey Robinson (at least in that photo)? Weird...
  11. Bird's quote was (depending on who you hear it from) was either "first you lean the blues, then you learn Rhythm changes, then you forget all that shit and just play" or "first you learn your instrument, then you learn the music, then you forget all that shit and just play", meaning that the ultimate realization is to internalize the knowledge to the point that the expression comes fully and effortlessly. The Tristano thing is all about that too, although they got all psychoanalytic about it. Same goal, though. Can't but a very few people reach that level, though, especially when what "it" is supposed to "be" increasingly becomes a predetermined outcome. But when it happens, where the music just flows like it's being channeled rather than "played", it's a beautiful thing!
  12. That Christian McBride is trying to quote Charlie Parker without quoting him?
  13. I wonder if you sit through it once...
  14. I'd never have guessed it, but GA put the idea in my head.
  15. Ok, I still don't get Alicia Keyes, but...you gotta be pretty anal (or Anglo, if there's a difference, and I sure hope to god there is) about pitch to find fault with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGHH7VqKpQQ&feature=related "Howling vulgarity", eh? Two different worlds...
  16. Sorry, Jon. My bad for not being disciplined enough to maintain the Ignore function. No more.

  18. I'll go with Alice Cooper, just because of the eyebrows.
  19. The problem I have with later Russell isn't with anything but the bands. I just don't hear the individual orchestral personality that I like to hear out of big bands. But that's quite possibly my problem, and listening objectively to the writing, it's still in a class of its own, imo.
