  1. Jimmy Carroll is a name I remember from some of the Little Golden Records I had when I was a kid, 78s that weren't even 7" in diameter.
  2. indeed.
  3. Did you not get your Blue Note Decoder Ring?
  4. mmmmm....mas cabrito, por favor!
  5. Robots are the new scarecrows!
  6. Not ever living in a market where he played, I can't comment on the "headline-grabbing" thing. all I know is that every time I saw him in the media, in uniform, he seemed like a guy who was really enjoying himself playing the game. Gotta love that, always. R.I.P.
  7. So, A B-3 is a robot!
  8. Better you to say it than me. For that matter, did you ever see a drum machine get out of the box ad start playing all by itself?

  11. The trio record is Talkin' About! Grant was pretty much a "local" type guy who was into playing clubs and getting high, not a really "career-minded" individual. Could he have been "more" with some effort and/or motivation? Maybe. but he was who he was and he played how he played. Me, I'm a fan, all caveats fully stipulated to. There's a definite Grant Green Zone, and how many players have a zone of their own? Not very many, that's how many! We could all be "more" than who we are (and who we set out to be, and who we end up being), but oh well. Comfort in one's own skin is nothing to be sneezed at either.

  13. Hittin' that Gerald Wilson one more time, this time focusing on the drumming. Mel Lewis, no surprises there, and Frank Butler kicks a big band as well as he did a small group (well, this big band, anyway), but...can't say that the names Chuck Carter, Mel Lee, or Carl Lott are in any way familiar, but there they are, and they are doing quite well.
  14. I thought hip-hop was the new jazz? But now it turns out that rock is the new jazz, which makes hip-hop the new rock. Damn, that's a bummer, because in general, I can get with good hip hop more than I can good rock (in general, rock stopped swinging decades ago), but now good hip-hop is good rock, so there goes that. I guess I just wasn't made for these times.
  15. Passed this one over for literally decades, because of Frankie Laine...just didn't seem like it would be anything more than token. Then yesterday, I finally touch it, decide to glance at the liner notes, and...WHOA - Budd Johnson & Big Nick Nicholas, so,,,YEAH! Turns out, it's essentially a Buck clayton "little big band" date w/Frankie Laine serving as band vocalist, not center attraction. Frankie Laine is still a little "funny", but it's really no problem, since generally puts in his one chorus and out, the rest of it being a Buck Clayton jam session w/charts. And Budd Johnson & Big Nick. HELL yeah!

  21. After the lunch I had today, I think that after some pressing, there will be a poop that packs a punch, after which there will be a feeling of liberty. How's that for a contrasts?

  23. Was America the same when Whitney came onto the scene as it was when Aretha signed to Atlantic? Would The Cosby Show have gotten made when Aretha signed to Atlantic? And, great skills aside, how long was Aretha's reputation as "the Queen of Soul" a mater of image rather than reality? Also, does assimilation come at the price of freedom come at the price of identity? Or is it all really nothing more than what you choose make of it at any given time? Can one have a new identity, or is the one you get the one you keep, anything else being fraudulent? Stuff like that. I guess the question is, how long (and how realistically) can one "look back" when one's circumstances start one further towards the from end of "success" than the back? And how right (not understandable, but right) is for those on the back end to clamor "stay, don't go" when those on the front end are pretty much all saying "c'mon in!"? If Whitney wasn't conflicted at the beginning of her career, I'd wager that she sure as hell was before it was all over (and that she's not been the only one...). I don't claim to have any answers, none at all. I don't think there are any answers, truthfully. America is like that. I just don't think that it's as easy as saying that "soul music shed its roots" or something like that.
  24. You should get Tupac to do this one.
