Not ever living in a market where he played, I can't comment on the "headline-grabbing" thing. all I know is that every time I saw him in the media, in uniform, he seemed like a guy who was really enjoying himself playing the game. Gotta love that, always. R.I.P.

The trio record is Talkin' About! Grant was pretty much a "local" type guy who was into playing clubs and getting high, not a really "career-minded" individual. Could he have been "more" with some effort and/or motivation? Maybe. but he was who he was and he played how he played. Me, I'm a fan, all caveats fully stipulated to. There's a definite Grant Green Zone, and how many players have a zone of their own? Not very many, that's how many! We could all be "more" than who we are (and who we set out to be, and who we end up being), but oh well. Comfort in one's own skin is nothing to be sneezed at either.

Hittin' that Gerald Wilson one more time, this time focusing on the drumming. Mel Lewis, no surprises there, and Frank Butler kicks a big band as well as he did a small group (well, this big band, anyway), but...can't say that the names Chuck Carter, Mel Lee, or Carl Lott are in any way familiar, but there they are, and they are doing quite well.

I thought hip-hop was the new jazz? But now it turns out that rock is the new jazz, which makes hip-hop the new rock. Damn, that's a bummer, because in general, I can get with good hip hop more than I can good rock (in general, rock stopped swinging decades ago), but now good hip-hop is good rock, so there goes that. I guess I just wasn't made for these times.

Passed this one over for literally decades, because of Frankie Laine...just didn't seem like it would be anything more than token. Then yesterday, I finally touch it, decide to glance at the liner notes, and...WHOA - Budd Johnson & Big Nick Nicholas, so,,,YEAH! Turns out, it's essentially a Buck clayton "little big band" date w/Frankie Laine serving as band vocalist, not center attraction. Frankie Laine is still a little "funny", but it's really no problem, since generally puts in his one chorus and out, the rest of it being a Buck Clayton jam session w/charts. And Budd Johnson & Big Nick. HELL yeah!
