  2. I think we need to clarify that "not that big a deal" is only referring to the potential for some kind of impending nuclear holocaust or some such. Obviously the lost of power is a big deal for, not just the citizens immediately impacted for it, but for the country as a whole.
  3. I have a copy of it & find it most enjoyable. I even saw a copy of it in the late 70s in a dusty (weren't they all?) mom & pop shop but did not have the good sense to buy it on the spot.
  4. You can't dive-bomb some that's never really been there. So by all means, do carry on. Or even better, carry out. It's all the rage these days, I hear.
  5. I don't know if Tony Asher is a great lyricist or not, but you couldn't ask for lyrics more suitable to the topic at hand than those he wrote for Pet Sounds. I mean, "Caroline, No" - . "Where did your long hair go?", "It's so sad to watch a sweet thing die", ""Will I ever find in you again things that made me love you so much then?"....in context, as the end of an arc that goes from eternally optimistic teenage to devastated uncertain young adult, that's one of the most devastating lyrics ever written. Hell, they all work perfectly on that album, not just individually, but as a cohesive whole. From "Wouldn't It Be Nice" to "Caroline No"....wow... But what else has Tony Asher done that's that great? Nothing that I know of.
  6. That's the Live @ The Museum of Modern Art side, no?
  7. I'm not convinced that it was ever actually recorded. I think it just showed up in the record stores one day, kinda like the Easter Bunny on a jazz run.
  8. That just comes with the territory of Van Dyke Parks (at the time, anyway). All the explanations I've heard are that it's a song about a hardened could confronting its own near-death of spirit and, having done so, deciding to spring back to life. Have you heard Park's Song Cycle? Way, way waaaaaayyy over the top lyrically & musically, but still brilliant. Nothing quite like it, even to this day.
  9. That was a JOKE. I thought it was well known that Love largely derailed Smile (along with Brian's meltdown), and that the Pet Sounds box was held up because Love wanted the liner notes revised. Yep.
  10. Bill Nye The Science Guy was just on CNN definitely dropping some science about the potential meltdown. He came across as pretty skeptical - but not wholly convinced - that something bad was not happening. For somebody who only remembers Bill Nye as host of a PBS science show that both kids watched, it was a jolt to hear him being for real, in a cool kind of way. Too bad the subject matter was so damn dark...
  11. ..and with Smile you won't be starting up again. I guess you're right, although even Brian referred to it as a "teenage symphony to God." Wasn't that Pet Sounds? In which case it would be a no-longer-a-teenager-and-totally-freaked-out-out-what-may-and/or-may-not-lay-ahead symphony to God.
  12. Can't say I'm obsessed with it, but it is really, really good. O'Day's voice & McFarland's arrangements are both very "dark" in hue. Usually some kind of contrast would be called for, but hey, what works, works.
  13. Eh, not really. It's just not "angelic" anymore, which is as it should be. ..and with Smile you won't be starting up again.
  14. How legit was Iron City in the first place? .... hmmmmmmmmmmmm.......
  15. Too late. The actual finished version is the end of this story. Everything else has been booted so much and anybody/everybody(almost) who has an interest has gone there and done that. Besides, the finished version is so damn good....
  16. Last time I looked at the TV before this evening was early this morning, not a lot of video then and reports were, I guess, very preliminary...had no idea then of the scope or scale of how intense this whole thing has been...best wishes to all affected, for real.
  17. Word is that Greenberg went rogue too often. Anecdotal evidence seems to support this. Sorry it came to that, but this is the guy that (allegedly) freelanced the last trip to Arkansas, delayed JD's contract renewal, and meddledin the Michael Young affair to the detrement of all. Ryan/JD, otoh, were through pursuing Lee & were ready to shop young earlier than later. Plus, Nolan stood up to his money guys, who expected Wash & JD both to be gone as soon as they took the reigns. So Nolan will not be arbitrarily pushed around by big buckage, not at the expense of his baseball instincts. But he does have his limits, & apparently Greenberg went over them. The last thing we need is another Jerry Jones/Mark Cuban type, especially one who doesn't really control the purse strings. Greenberg was a delightfully convivial "face" of ownership, and darn it, too bad how he was always upsetting those poor, put-upon Yankees, but I do believe that his departure leaves the ownership/management group in better, more capable baseball hands now that a proven freelancer/probably ongoing distraction has left.
