  2. I've got the Fresh Sounds issue of this & agree w/Larry. The only thing I might add is that I sense that this is a "battle" in the truest sense, you got two notorious cutthroat tenor players who were known to be brutal to anybody who dare to seriously challenge them, and I think that with these two, there's a sense of "wariness" by both parties at going too far for the jugular, b/c they both know how far it would end up going, and it is a Birdland gig, after all, etc. Very high-level playing by both men, but not a "free for all" jam, not by any means, but a strategic battle nevertheless, and one well worth observing and analyzing as such, as well as just plain ol' digging it.
  3. A BIG Word on that one, Chuck.
  4. Yeah, I realize that there are no absolutes & that everything is relative, and all of that stuff, but...this set is as much of a no-brainer as there's going to be for anybody who wants to know about jazz and not just listen to it. And even if that is just my opinion, it's also the truth! CARPE DIEM!!!

  11. I wondered about that too...several thoughts crossed my mind, none of them anything I'd put too much money money on - maybe because this was a "concert", and you could see these guys in a dance environment anytime? Not sure if the idea of salsa concerts aimed at "the community" was really an established on by then or not...one comment on YouTube described the event as the "Woodstock of Salsa", not sure how that was meant, and if it was an observation from afar or from one who was there...then there's the time, 1972, "salsa" was beginning to emerge as a lifestyle with some socio-politico implications in NYC, so it would only be right to be "serious" into the music...also, note the male/female ratio of the audience...you know chicks, they wanna go out, not go to some park to sit down ... no idea how late in the afternoon it was then, nor who else was on the bill...but the end of that second clip shows that dancing or not, there was electricity in the air that extended beyond the bandstand.
  12. Quality at "for collectors only" level, but LORD have mercy, the energy is palpable, as is the sense of time and place...Eddie may be known as "the crazy one", but Charlie's organ solos have always gone waaaaaaayyyyy out there. Two prime examples here, and perfectly audible. Don't know how commercilayy available this is, even at bootleg level, but...this, as a document, not a documentary, is the real deal. Barring anybody uncovering home movies with audio of a club date somewhere during this time, hey...feel the power. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zAMjFzafAI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eozZ_f9YVk0&feature=related

  18. Yeah, it's always there, it never goes away. You might, but it doesn't. That's why you gotta be ready!!!! I love it man, that's the brightes thing I've heard in a long time...then be ready.
  19. Best wishes to all!
  20. ...then be ready... Ladies and gentleman, there you have it - the essence of jazz, not just as music, but as life itself!
  21. Earlier for Tico, that's where the original La Perfecta stuff can be found, but...let me stroll over the the wall and see...hold on, brb......yes, Coco records, produced by Harvey Averne. There's a story about Palmieri, that label, and Unfinished Masterpiece, but damned if I can remember the details. All I know is that it and The Sun Of... it's like when you hear somebody hit that zone, that apex of unimpeded creativity, and you know it probably won't last forever, but it's just so STRONG that you let yourself believe that it will, and damned if that doesn't make YOU feel strong too...Good stuff, good place for everybody to be.
  22. So now what?
