  1. It's a world gone wrong, no news there. But what's not being asked is WHY? Personally, I think we're trying to force/encourage too may square pegs into round holes, so to speak. It's a world where people are encouraged, and quite often pressured, to go against their natural selves, to cut themselves off from their inner nature and instincts inorder to just get by. All sorts of religious/spiritual/economic/political/etc ramifications there. But bottom line - for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
  2. So, did you ochee mochee cochee pop?
  3. Frivolously? Why do you say that?
  4. There you have it, as far as I'm concerned. Love ain't always pretty, but it's the strongest force in the world.
  5. Whose quote is that, Dmitry?
  6. Tom Wilson was in the mix somehow, A&R, owner, I dunno. Cecil Taylor's first album was on the label. I have that particular Byrd side on a somewhat scratched original LP (found it for a fin about 20 years ago and bought it to satisfy my geek fetish). The cover is just pasted on a generic blue jacket, which I thought odd until I found out a few years ago that there was a liner note booklet included (and which was seperated from my copy somewhere along the way). I'm guessing that this was S.O.P. for the label. A cheapo webcam pic of the label is attached. My copy only has a label on one side, and it's held on by aged scotch tape. The label on the other side is missing. Also of interest is that the record is totally flat - no raised outer edge or anything in the center. That was the norm for a while for all labels, I believe, BTW - in very fine print in the lower right corner of the cover photo, there is a credit to "Rimson - Wilson".
  7. I recall reading some pretty geeky Internet debate (if that's not a redundancy... ) over whether or not Trane was actually on those sides, but I forget who made the better case. Seems that I remember the "no"s doing so, but I could well be wrong.
  8. The Navy recordings were braodcast in toto on WKCR not too terribly long ago. Recordings of the broadcast are circulating amongst collectors.
  9. Same here - he finally seems to have gotten his musical ADD under control and is playing very well if that new album is any indication.
  10. I'm just about convinced! I agree - this is a pretty innovative use of vault material. I'd prefer "real" CDs, but this'll have to do until the real thing comes along. What do y'all think has gotten into Verve anyway? Not too long ago, they weren't doing shit, now they're all over the place putting stuff out in all kinds of ways. And Maybe Mark got a promotion...
  11. Miss ya', bro. Happy Birthday.
  12. I thought the HDCD light was signifying "Here's Duke, Come Diggit". Guess I was wrong.
  13. One would indeed think so...
  14. Weren't they touring as "The Three Tenors"? Seriously!
  15. "Playing For The Benefit Of The Band" should be ingrained into the subconscious of every musician alive from now into eternity, by force if necessary. For real.
  16. That jaw-moving TOTALLY freaks out every saxophonist who sees it! (but it's also an object lesson in getting the tone from the diaphragm and throat and keeping the embouchure totally slack so as not to impede the airflow/reed vibration as well...)
  17. Here's a verse of a stop-time John Lee Hooker ala "Boom Boom Boom" thing I've composed. Follow it's advice and follow it well. Ochee mochee cochee pop. Do the bop until you drop. With a bucket full of slop, Do the bop until you drop. Do the bop until you drop. Ochee mochee cochee pop.
  18. Chet's singing is a case-by-case thing for me, but I swear - I'm beginning to think that a lot of "jazz fans" are vocalphobic!!!!
  19. When they're all dead everybody WILL want more. Buy now, take your time, enjoy forever.
  20. When I went to the iTunes page, it tried to install software on my computer? Is this normal/safe?
  21. Never cared for SPECIAL all that much myself when I had it (other than the drum solo on "Trio"). Sounded like the last gasp of an exhausted format, like they knew a change had to come and were killing time until it did. But it's been years since I've owned it (sold it at the tail end of the 70s, when I went through a dogmatic purge of all non-"great" jazz albums from my collection ), so maybe my opinion would be different now. But the other Columbia/Impulse! Hamilton/Lloyd things I kept/got later, after Szabo & Stinson had gotten on board, are uniformly excellent. Fresh, creative, and exciting music. Anybody heard the Reprise date?
  22. Not only on this board ... SCD-1 + Ultra Khan 2 (his new $4500 power cord)

    Blue Note SUCKS!!!!!

Well, for one thing, you'd be buying sides by Jacques McLean & Henri Mobley...
  24. Here's a seemingly comprehensive list of all the Tristano school contrafacts: http://www.uni-duisburg.de/AVMZ/frohne/marsh/standard.htm
