  1. You also have the arranger!
  2. I'm kinda creeped out that Wayne went before Sonny. Sonny is only 3 years older, but came on the scene and boomed everything up a decade or so before Wayne got public. I wonder how much of the opera with Esperanza Spaulding got finished. That might be a fascinating piece of music if there's enough there for it to become one.
  3. Austin Cromer!!! Eckstine as drawn by Bob Clampett!!! And Melba Liston!!! There's a lot of lost history in that cut.
  4. That cut stirred a memory of a story I was told by an older lounge pianist who had attended college with Mose (U of Miss?) for a little bit. Apparently Mose had a sunrise ritual of getting up on a hill with his trumpet, playing some sort of Reville-ish fanfare, and then reciting different beat type poetry, something like good morning citizens of planet Earth, the new day greets you anew" or some shit like that. So - shades of "Hello Universe" and oh yeah, Mose was playing trumpet then, and by this one guy's account, playing it well. So, originally gobsmacked, but only until that story came back, and then gobsmacked in yet a different way.
  5. Wayne's not gone. ALL that music ends up being full-sized life, and it will hopefully always be here. RIP
  6. Try this one instead:

So who DID play tenor on that Shirelles record?
  9. I very much like the with Strings albums, some really ravishing Ben Webster on it, but I recommended it here a few weeks ago and reception wash, shall we say, not enthusiastic. 💥
  10. Zero theological problems with the vocalist on #14, just totally tuned off by any and all of that type of singing. Sounds like some kind of a bad circus talent well past whatever prime there might have been. Walter Norris is a real sleeper of a talent, btw. Good to learn about that record!
  11. Any thoughts on Ego? Ted Dunbar seems the most counterintuitive replacement for McLaughlin possible, but it works, imo. Totally different too!
  12. Life should be protected, not just jazz. Malevolent spirits are to be guarded against. That record is epic!
  13. They don't owe me. They owe the cosmos
  14. This will be PBS?
  15. If Gorodi Pulholmes can get ALL of the MGM material stolen from Japan (if it's even there...) I'll hold my nose. As far as Mosaic doing anything King...even in the best of times, probably not. My own sense of moral outrage at the usurpation of all things "jazz" by the unsavoriest of predators has calmed somewhat over the years with the gradual realization that we're all crooks and liars sooner or later if only at our worst moments, but dammit, Mosaic STILL owes the galactic forces of rightness for that The Four Fucking Freshmen set. Talk about an unrighted wrong with NO sign of regret or remorse whatsome ever, there one is.
  16. Is it just me, or is Sinatra adopting an Eckstine-ish approach to his harmony/intervals on this one? He certainly did some amazing things on ballads over the years, but this one seems more overtly "boppish" than usual? Or maybe it's Riddle putting it there
  17. In the future, will they put three tracks on an acetate side when the record only has two? And in the future, will Savoy/Medallion Studios engage with some kind of Capitol facility? These are my questions to the past from the future.
  18. And by 2047 there will be a superdooper dogears digitalmicrochip implant where everything is available on demand, although whose demand is yet to be determined.
  19. Did I read somebody wishing that Blue Note emulate Contemporary covers? 🚫🚫🤪
  20. Yeah, but .. compare the timings, and # of tracks/side...curious ..

Was he a secret tenor player? Pretty good one then!
