  1. What is the story about the Ran Blake record? Was that owned by somebody else? I see Katz/Keepnews involved, but who else?
  2. I've got either LPs or cassette dubs (transferred to CD-R) of all of it, so that's my PD set. What to hope for (and hope is even less a strategy now than it ever has been)...is that when Max made these dals on the run that he negotiated either ownership of the masters, or a copy of them. And then the estate would have it, maybe, and then...is anybody talking to Maxene about all of her dad's holdings? Does she want to talk? Best place for all this to end up would be the Smithsonian.
  3. aHA! That makes sense...and am I correct in thinking that the chalk is an overlay, not actual chalk on the surface?
  4. I also looked at CD releases, OJC/etc. Nothing given there, either. I thought there might be a credit buried/hidden in the cover itself, but if so, I can't find it. .

  6. Sonny Stitts and Art Blakesly, they made the records with the linear notes.

  8. Oh yeah, check it out - I grew up in amsmall town, population 6K, and we had three grocers, four pharmacies, one movie theatre, a JC Penny store downtown, a men's clothing store, a women's "fashion" shop, all that. you'd think you were in a city except everything was small, small, but self-contained, and the community was there to support it. Driving to the next town wasn't really an option, because they'd have their version of the same things. But getting from one town to another was a matter of taking two-lane roads sith intersections, so....not really efficient for routine tasks. Grocers, we had one Piggly Wiggly, one Brookshire's (strong local-regional chain), and Gray's which was an Affiliated store. Independently owned, and famous for the Shur-Fine brand of anything canned or bagged. They had a meat market too. Different time, different palce, and yes, segregated water fountains. Yep, still remember that... Oh yeah, three hospitals! One "major" and two owned by doctors, one of them upstairs in their creaky ca. 1930X office building.

  10. Maybe like what Americans of a certain time/place might remember as Affiliated Groceries, on the buying end? A lot of independent grocers banding together to leverage for purchasing power? At one point, if you lived in a small town that had a grocery store, odds were good that it was an Affiliated. Not too many of them left, because Wal-Mart is the small town grocer now, and for all the towns, one store, everybody drives miles instead of minutes. Or would this have been bigger than that?
  11. Forces In Motion is "required reading" if you want to even begin to develop an understanding of the things that Braxton is "up to".. either that or being around him personally for however long. The guy is deep, and he's consistent. But he's not easy, if only because his "all at once" view is not what most people have. When mos peolle start sensing the wholeness of the whole, it gets,,,disorienting, probably. But not this guy.
  12. Does anybody get credit for the cover design on Groovy? Any likely suspects? That's a really, uh, groovy cover.
  13. A sobering reminder that life is fleeting... https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/brattleboro/obituary.aspx?n=rege-anders&pid=2609419 and one more again: https://www.shiva.com/resahimmelblau/
  14. It beats working, even if it does take forever to finish a book!
  15. and here's one that looks like it's all the same article, just with different titles:
  16. Amazon delivered via USPS in about 28 hours from ordering, just in time too, as I finished the last book I was reading. Since all the reading I do is on the can (and only sometimes to I need to stay extra long to reach a good stopping point...), I think this one will make it until the new Weather Report book arrives. First glance, lavishly footnoted, always an encouraging sign!
  17. I miss the days when Fantasy would reissue titles from the Fantasy Catalog...and all the other labels they ended up owning. The good news is that they did uberbuttloads of it, so it's in the wild, if you want it and can't find it, look harder and don't settle. The bad news is that they didn't get all of it, so...same thing. Still wondering about those contemporary classical records on Contemporary (no pun intended) but most of the other stuff...it's out thereif you know about it and want it, and all things considered, there's not that much that didn't get out legit at some point. I am thankful for this!
  18. Uh, slavery (ditched if only at morally correct gunpoint, but it sure looks like it's becoming a luxury missed by those who enjoyed it...and still alive and well in the modern world)? That's "good riddance (for as long as it is rid). Now, of questionable riddances of betterments - Live customer service? Maybe soon, vaccines? Objective reality? Facts? Life gets lived with or without any of those (alternate facts!), so hardly necessities, and only luxuries until deemed disposable. (DISPOSABLE!!!!!) at which point they do get disposed. And anytime something is constantly negotiated downward in value, it eventually gets disposed of. But I NEED that!!!! So...go get it. Do the work. Otherwise, It's not exactly like you can trust us to always do what is better over what is easier. I remain very skeptical of the innate wisdom of our instincts, especially where getting more for less is involved. If progression is inevitable, so is regression. And there's always an "inflection point".
  19. Sounds like Sergio Mendes on CTI. (and I mean that as a compliment)
  20. Don't worry, I'll put it in a digital comp of one million other people's and sell it for $0.02...and not one penny goes to you! Don't worry, I'll put it in a digital comp of one million other people's and sell it for $0.02...and not one penny goes to you!
  21. Well, there you go. Thus begins the thinning of one segment of the herd. If believed, that is. Sounds like more droll 50s RetroMod FuturePast drivel to me, Ironyzed yeast! What is a true necessity? Water (UH-oh, Earth, getting kinda dicey there!), and some kind of food, some kind of clothing, and some kind of shelter. Past that, everything else is negotiation up or down, including how much crap our lazy asses are willing to negotiate down (aka "settle for") in the name of "convenience". Tipping point, anybody? It is, but if you have digital files yet complain about not having a CD of them, that's on you, all the way.
  22. In the future there will be no need for anybody to work, somebody else will do it for them!
  23. Well then, they are not your real friends. Go to their house and prevail upon them to get that shit done, asap. Or else go to K-Mart buy a bag of cheap cassettes and do that. That works too. Because if you wait for some halfass shankerdanker to do it, that's probably what you're going to end up with anyway, more or less. Being a bottom feeder means eating, not feeding, unless of course you get caught. And if that's lucrative enough for long enough they'll start farm-raising your ass.
