I get it - composition vs improv has been thought of as separate disciplines, you do one or the other, and/or you bring one to the other. Roscoe "problematizes" them by asking that the players don't think in those binary terms, to improvise the composition while composing the improvisation, not either/or, both and, or more accuately, just "one thing". If you look at "problematizing separatist notions" as simply "shaking it up" then maybe that's a more "earthbound" way to look at it. But not nearly as descriptive and actual. Actually doing things with a purpose...you figure that out on a granular level if you really want to do it yourself, "Impressions" are not going to get you to doing it! It's a maybe inartful phrase (but maybe it is quite artful!), but that's what he means - realigning the mindset of "what are we doing with this"...and quite relevant to Sorey's own work.

Not saying that Texas is worse than any other state in this regards, but...do not trust their "official" numbers about too much of anything. The COVID data on the county level was very clear and reliable the first few months, but then a new state-imposed methodology was imposed, and...all of a sudden it got weird. That's all I feel like saying about that. I was already working from home and had sense enough to learn to live at home and to take all precautions when venturing out, so their "data" was no longer relevant for my lifestyle. Just saying, though, it got weird, and that was not comfortable. Just as the February Freeze-o-Rama was not comfortable, and for some of the same reasons - people saying shit that does not reflect reality.

That's why they were able to repackage it as Succotash - Herbie was huge, Willie Bobo was more visible than ever, and the record was not in catalog. I'm, like, let's get young women in general to build up the inner core to call bullshit when it happens, not after it happens. And maybe even how to have the smarts (and support systems), to not get in so many of these bullshit situations to begin with.
