Soft, even when it's loud!

Well, no of course not! But those could be just names, I mean Alice made plenty of records with a lot of "names" and they didn't get here, to this place. I slept on that record for a looooong time, not because I was anti-Alice (not at all), but I just figured that she had said all she was going to say and that this would be more of it only in a trio setting. Well, no. So much more than that. Plus, you know, there's always been this contingent of "Alice Coltrane couldn't really play shit blahblahblah that is really....whatever. I want those people to listen to this record, it's very much a trio of equals, Alice is feeding them and they are feeding her and it's just...playing. Very much everybody fully engaged, no equivocation from anybody about anything.

Don't remember where I bought it, or when, or why, but I've been listening to the Sepia Tome issue of Transfiguration most of this morning, and that is about as good an Alice Coltrane record as there is in terms of it being a "jazz record". BURNING!!!!

Hardly a new thought, but it's the DK that makes the V.

Where I stand is that a society will always need a mechanism of protection against malevolent actors, of which there will always be, street thugs, con-men, jewel thieves, back alley blades, hedge fund managers, whatever, they WILL be there. And a society needs an organized mechanism to engage against them. You can call them "police" or a "civic patrol" or whatever you want, but an organized society will have such a tool in place. I am not at all in favor of disbanding or otherwise eliminating the "police" as an end unto itself. I am in favor of seriously fixing - redefining - the police. The current model of law enforcement (and note that "law enforcement" is a phrase that does not necessarily imply protection or service) is adequate in neither efficiency, purpose, or execution. We are not protected, we are not served, we are used as pawns in a racial/economic/class hustle that is part of a game that most of us are set up to never really win. At best, we get to not lose. But you don't just "disband" the police unless you have something better (and lord knows there is something better) to go with. Otherwise...what have you got other than a complaint without a solution? So if the plan is to disband and replace, sure, let's do that. But this"defund"/"disband" talk, yeah, ok, then what? I've lived too long in a world of valid complaints turning into silly slogans accompanied by zero visions of what to do after. That's a perfect recipe for nothing to happen except more of the same, only worse. Because, they have a vision, they have a plan, they know how to execute. How the hell is a slogan going to beat that? If you take it apart and don't put something better in its place, they will be back. Yuck.

I'm kinda lie, you know, fuck it. At this point, the illusions are all gone. We need Loel Passe to tell us that we're in for a big year, haven't even scratched the surface yet. Now that's baseball! But don't take my word for it: Check out Bob Aspromonte's "satisfying poke"....

COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee

Boomers suck. Which is why directionality matters. Two rights, and you go down. Three rights and you make a left. Four rights, and there you are again, Be we Billy, or be we not Billy, this is the question that must always have the correct answer at the ready: Nevertheless, hey boomers. Boomers suck. We all getting old and can't predict which way we going, because we can't tell up from down or all around, we're like a see-saw, we see a saw and don't know when or what to cut out. I blame it all on our history of following blindly. -

So? Two wrongs don't make a right, although three rights do make a left. -
How long has Harry been on Verve, or put another way, how long has he been off of Columbia?

Interesting how few of his own compositions Weston had on his first few Riverside LPs. I wonder if he hadn't written that many yet, of it the label was being, uh..."cautious".

I am very much a fan, but keep in mind that that specific band began in 1966, before the move to impulse! although most of their output on Ago/Cadet gave no real inking of what they were all about. However, this 1965 album, with Nasser & the returning Vernel Fournier, certainly does. I continue to find it fresh and stimulating, and a little surprising, still. Here's their first record on Cadet that shows what they were going to be on with, skittish/vampy/harmonically static until not/etc. Just very much a playing band on a gig that really might have just required competently showing up and executing the replications. But yeah, the impulse! albums tend to be very strong, check this out, this is the crux of all things Jamal - at once totally the same as before, but also totally different. That was/is how he improvises, not with licks or lines, but with architecture. Very subtle, and once cannot be faulted for shrugging and walking away. Same thing, only different. I like it.

http://heightfiveseven.com/ Her activity has slowed considerably, but she still has a few new offerings a year. Vinyl, like any other narcotic, is measured in weight to truly assess its value. I went on a digging excursion and got so much vinyl that it made my goddamn car’s passenger seatbelt sensor go off. And that, my dears, is how you know you’ve had a successful dig. -
