  1. Interesting thread. I've only heard a little of Curran (on compilations), have heard lots of Rzewski (including live) and a little Teitelbaum live. I don't want to nitpick, but was Elliott Carter really involved in the founding of MEV? I find that very hard to believe!
  2. Happy birthday!
  3. Happy Birthday to the guy who always remembers others' b'days!
  4. Interesting! I do a lot of crossword puzzles, but only the "British cryptic" type, viz. the ones in the Guardian and London Times newspapers and Private Eye magazine. These puzzles occupy their own little world, and it takes a while to "learn the rules", but they can be a lot of fun. A good summary of cryptic composing/solving devices is at http://www.ukpuzzle.com/crypticxwordguide.htm
  5. +1 in spades. As often happens, I agree with Moms's general drift, with some reservations about her (?) particular wording ( on "turd", though ). Years ago, I bought Dyer's But Beautiful on the basis of some enthusiastic Internet reviews. I couldn't stand it (a "catastrophic" purchase subsequently donated to the local library), which may go to say that Dyer is capable of offending when writing about straight-ahead as well as avant-garde jazz!
  6. Pretty wild, isn't it? I have the Boulez recording, also saw a live (J. Levine) performance. Haven't listened in a long time, but passages like Du hast eine halbe Million geheiratet stick in my mind. If you're not familiar with Wozzeck, I strongly recommend it too. Not quite as bizarre as Lulu, but definitely out there. Weirdly, that was the first opera I ever attended!
  7. Thanks, GA! Much appreciated. I'm a lurker these days, but visit the site pretty often.
  8. I don't know enough about cycling to comment on all the team/TdF issues, etc. But I saw this interesting Wiggins interview today: http://velonews.competitor.com/2014/09/news/metamorphosis-interview-bradley-wiggins_347224
  9. RIP. I've recently been enjoying the Jazz Crusaders Mosaic.
  10. CD arrived, fast shipping and very careful packaging. Thanks. Agreed on the Wallington, but I already own the release on Wounded Bird.
  11. Goodell is accused of having been too lenient. He originally suspended Rice for two games as penalty for knocking his (then) fiancee unconscious (in February), at the same time he was suspending players four games for recreational drug abuse (pot, MDMA). There was never, from day one, any dispute about Rice KOing the woman. All hell has broken loose (and Rice released / indefinitely suspended) after the release of the videotape, and all sorts of coverup/conspiracy theories have been concocted. "What should Goodell have done?" Consensus seems to be that the original suspension should have been longer and that the NFL should have investigated more fully.
  12. The Associated Press is knocking the cover off the ball concerning the Rice story: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ap-newsbreak-source-says-rice-210004857--nfl.html Making a lot of prominent sports "reporters" look like dopey shills (shocking...).
  13. IMO, a lot of this sudden disgust after leaking of the tape is PR spin-doctoring BS. As the Associated Press's story yesterday points out, it's basically always been known that Rice KO'd Palmer: ...The action [baltimore's termination of Rice's contract] represented a complete reversal for the team, even though an Atlantic City police summons stated that Rice caused ''bodily injury to Janay Palmer, specifically by striking her with his hand, rendering her unconscious.''... Meanwhile, is anyone surprised by the fact that Rice was sponsored by Nike? http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/24702700/report-nike-terminates-endorsement-deal-with-ray-rice
  14. PM sent on Sonny Criss: At the Crossroads (Peacock/Victor, MVCZ-54)
  15. I gave up on Arby's back in the late '70s, when I would eat just about anything (which says a lot). I hope the chain's improved since then. I wonder what the "nutrition information" numbers look like. Seems like the perfect item to be written up by FOX...Arby's probably paid for "product placement".
  16. I finally decided to spring for the Jazz Crusaders set. Was really torn on this one: lots of fun to listen to, and there's considerable personal nostalgia value, but OTOH there's so much heavier / more "serious" stuff out there that I ought to buy...hey, what the heck.
  17. I can't say Epstein's way is bad. Seems to me that modern baseball free agency is the ultimate real-world application of the behavioral economics concepts of "winner's curse" and "buyer's remorse". To sign a marquee (position) FA, a club has to spring for 10 years at Brobdingnagian salary level (see Pujols and Cano deals), and the back end of the contract's certain to be dead wood with the player around 40. For top FA pitchers, the base salary is no less (see Kershaw deal), contract years are fewer, but injury risk (see the rash of elbow reconstructions) is much higher. OTOH, to have sustained success the Epstein way, the club has to be really smart, because the young players developed tend to leave as free agents after five years (see Tampa Bay Rays). So there has to be a constant flow of top prospects. Maybe Epstein plans to make the club a contender with young home-grown players, and then fill out the roster / stay at the top level with judicious FA signings.
  18. Lance Berkman summed up Wrigley nicely: It's one of the worst places in baseball for, well, just about anything. I really don't like it. I read where they got approval for some more upgrades. Count me in the group of people extremely happy to see that. I guess I'm just spoiled. There is a tremendous history associated with it and there is something special about playing on the same field that guys like Babe Ruth did. But really, what kind of history is there? It's not like there has been one championship after another. It's mainly been a place for people to go and drink beer.
  19. I agree!! My dental hygienist suggested that I switch to an electric toothbrush, and I've been using one (a competing brand) for a few years. I think it's been effective (though I'm a moron and likely tend to autosuggestion).
  20. On general principles, I won't click on any FOX link. I expect they'll recommend something like French fries. Or toothpaste with Triclosan: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-08-11/in-35-pages-buried-at-fda-worries-over-colgate-s-total.html
  21. This piece? http://blogs.artinfo.com/blunotes/2014/08/sonnygates-spawn/
  22. Yes, with Steve Martin as Vladimir, 1988. I was living in NY at the time, sorry I missed it.
