  1. For what it's worth, Presto Classical (UK) has an online box set sale expiring today (1/16). Shipping rates to USA are low, and some prices are favorable relative to Amazon sellers. I bought 4 items (Bavouzet's complete Debussy solo piano music, "Flemish Polyphony" by various artists, "Complete works of Guillaume Lekeu" by VA, and "Scarlatti: 50 Sonatas" by Pierre Hantai), which is a big splurge for me. [Usual disclaimers apply: I have no relationship to Presto Classical, etc.]
  2. Going to see Jack DeJohnette (playing solo piano!) Friday. I don't have any of his recordings as leader, so ordered
  3. I came across the following box (on the Ricercar label) by accident, while searching for something else. It looked so compelling that I had to order it! [Added: Not all the music is sacred (some of the secular stuff is even off-color), but there are a lot of excellent masses.] Review and track listing here
  4. Good article on the NFL's stadium-building insanity, prompted by the Chargers' just-announced relo. " These buildings [lavish new stadia] are in use no more than a couple dozen days each year, and they are built, in most cases, with substantial contributions from taxpayers. They are incapable of achieving many of their supposed purposes—creating economic stimulus, providing public space—but they sure make imposing if not especially enduring monuments to NFL owners." [Sorry, I couldn't find any other NFL threads.]
  5. Just ordered, waiting for delivery.
  6. Sorry I'm late, but hoping it was a great one!
  7. Strongly agree on Berio and voices! Re. the non-vocal music, my experience has been highly mixed. Maybe I haven't heard the right pieces.

    RIP Victor Bailey

Very sad indeed. Regrettably, I only learned of this yesterday (5 Jan 2017).
  9. Discs 1-3. Hope to get through the whole box the next couple of days.
  10. Will do, but it will take a while, possibly 2 weeks or so. In the meantime, I see that you heard the Goldbergs on Opus 111. Hope you enjoyed them.
  11. These were both well-done, though somewhat predictable.
  12. It arrived, but was defective and I've already packed it up to return tomorrow. I very much liked disc 1, which was done in a lively style, but track #8 consisted of static (though all others were fine). That pissed me off so much that I couldn't form serious impressions of discs 2 and 3 (though I listened). My erudition in the area of harpsichord recordings is insufficient to make significant recommendations. I definitely enjoy Hantai's Goldbergs (older release on Opus 111), and he's long been well-regarded. The reviews I've read of his Scarlatti are excellent. I will almost certainly order a replacement set. In purely economic terms, the big complete box by Scott Ross (34 discs for $54 + S/H from Amazon sellers) has a good reputation and is a far better deal than $22 + S/H for this one. But I avoid mega-boxes (most of the discs never get played), and 34 CDs is serious overkill for me in this repertory.

  14. Happy birthday! And the Browns won!
  15. I read a lot of the books on "behavioral economics" and this is a new one (about the Kahneman/Tversky collaboration, if that helps).
  16. Happy birthday! Sorry I'm late. Interesting, but will pass on the mathletics.
  17. Happy belated birthday!
  18. Can't comment on Kenton/Neophonic, but a couple of Euro serialists I find enjoyable are Barraqué and Dallapiccola. The "Complete Barraqué " on cpo is very good except for a horrible performance of the Piano Sonata (Woodward and Henck are in-print alternatives; I like the OOP Chen). There's a good recording of D's Il prigionero by Salonen on Sony (haven't heard the obscure Ulisse).
  19. I'll Remember April (feat. Bud Powell) from this:
