  1. Big trade up for the J-E-T-S to take Sanchez. Al Davis makes another puzzling draft choice. JJ will have to work hard to match that one, Big Al.

There's In Style as well as 12.
  3. Great great album! Just managed to snag this one for $5 and Dupree is on fire! What a surprise to get such great jazz at this price! I once hemmed and hawed at $40 for an original; I think it was a little worn. I should have bought it and have been kicking myself since. I watched for it on eBay for a long time and wound up buying a copy for around $15 iirc. Isn't Katanga on the Curtis Amy Select?
  4. "I've never heard of Granta before. Do you have any other information? " Granta's a well-established "magazine of new writing" published four times a year. Pricey, but back issues are readily available on Amazon Marketplace, for instance. I bought the issue with the Bolton article for under $1 (iirc) plus the Amazon Marketplace S/H. [Added: Lots currently available for a penny plus S/H. Disclaimer: I'm not one of the sellers.] Granta's standards are high: other authors in #69 include Hanif Kureishi and Paul Theroux.
  5. Probably not news to many, but there's an interesting 20+-page Bolton article (no interview, however) called Gifted, by Richard Williams, in Granta #69 (Spring 2000).
  6. By my green candle, here I am, the King of this country and I've already got myself indigestion and they're going to bring me my big head piece.
  7. PM sent on Johnny Griffin - Grab This! - Riverside OJC CD-1941-2 $5
  8. Me too. But I think NBC tried it once (not an option, they just bagged the announcers) as an experiment, around 1980 iirc. The broadcast wasn't considered a success, so I doubt it'll be done again.

Bird of Red and Gold (solo) is easy to find used. Some Spanish (?) pirate label has released a Complete Tokyo 1976 disc (I don't buy these, but YMMV).
  10. Isn't Het Nieuwsblad a major Flemish newspaper? I've read that Flemish is a dialect of Dutch; they certainly look alike to this nonspeaker. (Yes, I know Flanders is in Belgium. )
  11. Chris Leak Pudge Heffelfinger Hans Brinker
  12. Couple of authors were recently recommended to me: Henning Mankell, who writes popular Swedish detective stories. I've read some (Kurt Wallender series, in English), and they're pretty good, though I prefer the full-length novels to the precursor (though subsequently written) novellas. I'm trying to track down Larry Devlin's Chief of Station, Congo, may be able to borrow a copy this weekend.
  13. Formally OT, but this is the only hockey thread I could find: Son of 'Slap Shot' Star scores in Toronto win NEWARK, N.J. (AP)—The son of one of the notorious Hanson brothers from the movie “Slap Shot” scored his first NHL goal, and Martin Gerber played a spectacular game with 47 saves as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the suddenly inconsistent New Jersey Devils 4-1 on Tuesday night. (Slap Shot is one of my all-time favorites)
  14. This is very exciting news! I gasped when I scrolled down to the price, however.
  15. Ouch. I threw in the towel and tuned out at 38-18.
  16. Moira Shearer Elvis Costello Diana Krall
  17. Didn't he post Temeuzen?
  18. Interesting. I recall Torben Ulrich as a tennis player, but didn't know he was a musician.
  19. Midge Ure Harold Urey Ian Dury
  20. Mars Blackmon Spider Sabich Claudine Longet
  21. Joe Page Elroy Face Phil "The Vulture" Regan
  22. I never heard of the dude (thank God; there are definite benefits to not watching TV), but he's lucky not to have gotten uh, more than his tongue bitten.
  23. Z-list infomercial "celebrity" gets his schlong bitten by hooker...
