  1. Strange coincidence...I just purchased (rec'd Saturday) from felser a twofer of 2 of those 3 albums (Fast Last! and Rope-a-Dope) on a 32Jazz reissue (American Gumbo). Even more weirdly, the 2-album American Gumbo and 3-album Mirage compilations were both released in 1999. I don't get it.
  2. And throw in a synthetic rant or two! 😄
  3. Sorry, John. No intent. I posted the Chinmoy stuff because I had a funny recollection, deleted the post. I don't care to comment on the rants, don't know any details.
  4. If you Google the character string carlos santana rant, just those alpha characters with no punctuation surrounding them, you'll get more than you could imagine on the recent trans thing. If you enclose them in quotation marks, "carlos santana rant", Google will return additional references to a variety of prior rants. Disclosure: I didn't bother to visit any of the links returned.
  5. Google reveals a recent brouhaha concerning an "anti-trans rant". I'm completely out of touch with popular culture, so have no idea what any previous rants might have addressed. In any case I've never looked to popular figures' onstage remarks for philosophical, moral, ethical, ... guidance. 🙄
  6. I knew Mayo Smith only as long-time manager of the Tigers, including '68 World Series title. Had no idea he managed other teams. Looks like Mayo's big league playing career consisted of only 1 season, so he must have been playing ketchup for the most part.

    Bob Dylan corner

[Emphasis added] Me neither. I agree with the above sentiment that John Wesley Harding was the peak, and Blood on the Tracks is my personal line in the sand. But as a youth I was so heavily into those early albums that it became impossible for later releases to have the same magic or live up to my expectations. So while there have been many good and worthwhile Dylan albums over the years, my attention drifted elsewhere. Hear plenty of his music on the radio, but don't play recordings at home.

  11. Mayo on frites is a big Euro thing, I think especially in Netherlands/Belgium. I like it! Also vinegar.
  12. The one time I had poutine, it was definitely genuine. Way up the St. Lawrence in Quebec, somewhat Northeast of Tadoussac. If the ketchup was served as a side, I wouldn't doubt legitimacy. That way leaves the ketchup decision up to you. My experience (somewhat faded by the fact that I was slightly loaded on super-strong Trappist style beer )was that poutine is really heavy, and I had difficulty finishing the (large) plate. Vinegar and/or (possibly) ketchup would have made it go down easier, actually. I think I went for some mayo, which I enjoy on frites, but I just didn't love the cheese curds. I subsequently visited Montreal a bunch of times but never again ordered poutine.
  13. Thanks.
  14. I'm tempted by many, particularly pianists and Euro/Dutch musicians. Might even take a flyer on some of the funk-type releases. But it's gonna take some parsing and research. Where do you see the Sep 27 batch? I only find dates up to the 20th.
  15. A link is DG coming soon Scroll down slightly.
  16. "The Bastards" are showing a bunch of upcoming (soon) 3-CD Ultra-Vybe 1800 yen reissues from various labels incl. Mainstream, Enja, Timeless and others. Pretty diverse, interesting and off-the-beaten-track selection. CDJapan also has 'em, which could be a cheaper route in sufficient quantity.
  17. Live at Macalester College? TM must have found that by now, unless he insisted on the pre-release hand-made cover. For non-vinylites willing to wait 13 years or so, the Porter CD released 2008(!) eventually became easy to find; even I own a copy.
  18. Yeah, I just re-read much of the thread. Agreed that the substance of the article was solid. I sometimes go overboard about matters of style. I've been trying to focus (and not just in music reading) on what's being said as opposed to how it's phrased, but being an old fart I don't always manage to. No comments on Doyle, I haven't heard anything by him yet (combination of scarcity and a certain amount of negative reviews). I have no beef with the recordings on TM's list, in fact it's grown on me over time.
  19. I found the thread and edited my post. In hindsight, TM's writing wasn't really all that bad, nor was the forum reaction all that negative. But the "hipper than thou" style of some prominent list compilers does grate on me.
  20. I sometimes enjoy reading lists, but they can be also be irritating. Not to troll or anything, but I recall Thurston Moore posting some list of free jazz favorites that got absolutely roasted on this forum (there's a thread somewhere in the archives, it was quite a while ago). [Found it] I think the big problem with that one was the writing, which seemed somewhat pretentious and poseur-like. I can dig suggestions, but please spare me the self-parodic ramblings. 😉
  21. Yeah, I remember liking that one...back in the '90s I used to regularly visit the Perfect Sound Forever website.

  23. No, it's a different release. I have the a Live at Pit Inn - that album has some standards and no Sato compositions. https://www.discogs.com/release/9652328-Masahiko-Togashi-JJSpirits-So-What-Live-At-Pit-Inn-Shinjuku And there's yet another (different) Live at Pit Inn which has two different Sato pieces: https://www.discogs.com/release/13040324-Masahiko-Togashi-JJSpirits-Update-Live-At-Pit-Inn-Shinjuku-On-December-16-1995 I can't find this particular release on discogs.
