  1. There's a boatload of free jazz interview footage that shows really alarming sets of teeth. I find it striking and more than a little scary. As a fan of many of the musicians, will pass on dropping any more names.
  2. I'll put in a word for McPherson's Xanadu recordings as well. I like the Arabesque recordings that I've heard. Particularly fond of this Prestige, one of his recordings I listen to most often:
  3. I couldn't help noticing Silva's teeth in a free jazz documentary. [I thought I had it bookmarked, but apparently not...was it "Inside out in the open?" Somebody once posted a link on the forum and I watched the whole film.] Not sure how leverageable! They certainly wouldn't serve as a recruiting poster for free jazz as a career. 😢
  4. Me too. Some ambitious quant should develop a "vinyl price index". 😄 Something analogous to various crypto indices, S&P Global Luxury Index, fixed-income (bond) indices, etc. Maybe it already exists, but I'm not into vinyl and haven't seen anything. There's already a luxury watch price index, for instance, but that was probably easier to set up since it uses 60 models from 10 well-known brands. I'd be interested in seeing graphs of a "vinyl index" vs. luxury watches, housing prices, crypto, etc. [Added] Scarcity of the underlying vinyl seems much more important than the art. For instance, Alan Silva's 4-CD "Treasure Box" package doesn't sell at much of a premium to the 4 plain vanilla CDs. Hmm...maybe I should buy a bunch of the Silva boxes? 🤣...No way!
  5. Lee Pan Geun Jazz Quintet (Korean)
  6. I actually own this. Good one!
  7. Judging from age-group sports, there are plenty of folks who, via juicing with HGH, other hormones and God knows what else, think they are holding the aging process at bay. 🤔
  8. 🤣Heading for Kind of Blue status? I think it's somewhat risible that all these megabuck "Audiophile" releases seem to be targeted at aging boomers with deteriorating hearing...but they sure got disposable income!
  9. It's happening in many areas, not just LPs. For instance, high-end bicycles have become absolutely ridiculous. Every mfr. seems to have a $15,000 (or more) flagship model, and $500 seems to be the number for high-zoot handlebars, or shoes, or saddle, or helmet, or "oversized pulley wheels", ... And you're hopeless without hydraulic disc brakes and electronic shifting! Rim brakes and mechanical shifting are practically extinct. 🤣 I used to play hockey, and same deal. I recently noticed to my astonishment that high-end pro hockey skates top out around a grand. 🤔

    Billy Harper

I have quite a few recordings of BH as leader, old and new. Capra Black remains kind of a Holy Grail, have heard it only on Youtube and think it's his best, but recordings hard to find. I saw BH live around 2016 or 17 (forget). Played great, exceptionally nice guy with impressive presence, incredible physical condition and appearance for his age.
  11. I got a scratched copy and had to reorder from DG. Took a couple of listens to appreciate, but I like the disc very much. The Vlady Bas piece is nice indeed, but overstays its welcome a bit (slightly too long) IMO. The only track to which I'm kind of indifferent is Elia Fleta's vocal piece Remembrance to Madrid, but that's just me (don't listen to much vocals). This CD and the Ruben Lopez Furst Jazz Argentino en la Universitad, also a $5.99 VampiSoul special from DG, are two of my top recent sleeper purchases.
  12. No big deal, just pedantry on my part. Grateful for the info on the book at hand.
  13. Thanks, Mark. I tried to investigate, noticed the page difference but stalled out. SUNY Press is not particularly "small" IMO, though their Excelsior Editions subdivision may be. I've read a number of good SUNY publications and even own a few, though they're on rather arcane subjects.
  14. Liner notes to Dexter Gordon's True Blue said that Sam Noto played primarily in Vegas for a long time, and Noto's website says 1969-76. Wardell Gray of course died mysteriously outside Las Vegas. I assumed he'd played there, but the only concrete thing I found (WIki) is that he had been hired by Benny Carter to play there, attended rehearsals, but missed the opening date and was found dead the next day.
  15. Thanks. I posted this recently on an existing Grex thread, but it sank without a trace. 😅
  16. Off-topic for this thread - sorry, didn't know where to post - but I just saw this upcoming date: GREX (Margaret Rei Scampavia/Karl A.D. Evangelista Duo); Allen Lowe/Lewis Porter Duo Tubby's, Kingston, NY, August 2 Surprised nobody posted it anywhere.
  17. Because it's such a low-priced item, they (DG) are crediting my account rather than sending a replacement. So I plan to throw a copy (if still in stock) in my next order. The scratch is at the end of the last track, so I can listen to around 95% of the disc straight through. In the meantime, I ordered this from elsewhere
  18. Excellent. I knew little about Melling, but have been enjoying the Skidmore box and impressed by his playing!
  19. Got the disc. Sounded very good on a first listening. Unfortunately, the CD arrived scratched and has to go back.😢 Hope to say more if / once a replacement copy is received.
