    Billy Harper

I have quite a few recordings of BH as leader, old and new. Capra Black remains kind of a Holy Grail, have heard it only on Youtube and think it's his best, but recordings hard to find. I saw BH live around 2016 or 17 (forget). Played great, exceptionally nice guy with impressive presence, incredible physical condition and appearance for his age.
  2. I got a scratched copy and had to reorder from DG. Took a couple of listens to appreciate, but I like the disc very much. The Vlady Bas piece is nice indeed, but overstays its welcome a bit (slightly too long) IMO. The only track to which I'm kind of indifferent is Elia Fleta's vocal piece Remembrance to Madrid, but that's just me (don't listen to much vocals). This CD and the Ruben Lopez Furst Jazz Argentino en la Universitad, also a $5.99 VampiSoul special from DG, are two of my top recent sleeper purchases.
  3. No big deal, just pedantry on my part. Grateful for the info on the book at hand.
  4. Thanks, Mark. I tried to investigate, noticed the page difference but stalled out. SUNY Press is not particularly "small" IMO, though their Excelsior Editions subdivision may be. I've read a number of good SUNY publications and even own a few, though they're on rather arcane subjects.
  5. Liner notes to Dexter Gordon's True Blue said that Sam Noto played primarily in Vegas for a long time, and Noto's website says 1969-76. Wardell Gray of course died mysteriously outside Las Vegas. I assumed he'd played there, but the only concrete thing I found (WIki) is that he had been hired by Benny Carter to play there, attended rehearsals, but missed the opening date and was found dead the next day.
  6. Thanks. I posted this recently on an existing Grex thread, but it sank without a trace. 😅
  7. Off-topic for this thread - sorry, didn't know where to post - but I just saw this upcoming date: GREX (Margaret Rei Scampavia/Karl A.D. Evangelista Duo); Allen Lowe/Lewis Porter Duo Tubby's, Kingston, NY, August 2 Surprised nobody posted it anywhere.
  8. Because it's such a low-priced item, they (DG) are crediting my account rather than sending a replacement. So I plan to throw a copy (if still in stock) in my next order. The scratch is at the end of the last track, so I can listen to around 95% of the disc straight through. In the meantime, I ordered this from elsewhere
  9. Excellent. I knew little about Melling, but have been enjoying the Skidmore box and impressed by his playing!
  10. Got the disc. Sounded very good on a first listening. Unfortunately, the CD arrived scratched and has to go back.😢 Hope to say more if / once a replacement copy is received.
  11. This (Kikuchi / Togashi / Peacock) is really good.

    Mose Allison

His early instrumental In Salah became a standard of sorts and was a favorite of George Wallington.
  14. [Italics added] I hope so. But if you pass by a month from now and find the free library box is gone...🙄
  15. I was really impressed by the outstanding Invisible Man, read some other fiction that didn't measure up, and Ellison dropped off my radar screen. He certainly deserves fame based on that one work. In Florida?...I hope the young woman doesn't get arrested. I'd also consider the possibility that she took the book in order to burn it, or to report its presence to local "authorities". 🤔
  16. Interesting question, hard to say. I took a look at the Luaka Bop page, and they claim to have been working personally with Sanders on this release (when he passed). So as far as India Navigation goes, I'm inclined to think it's a one-off. But that's mere speculation. https://www.luakabop.com/products/pharoah-sanders-pharoah-deluxe-2-lp-box-set-harvest-time-live-1977
  17. Got this solo piano recording recently, with very high expectations. First listen didn't impress, so I set it aside for a couple of weeks. Listening again and enjoying it much more.
  18. I've never had any interest in the Hoffman board - no disrespect intended, I already waste enough time on Internet forums and am not looking to increase - but a recommendation including "by far the sanest place over there" doesn't exactly come across as glowing. 🤣
  19. Sure, if I can remember...😄 Not sure I recall that thread, but the disc was also recommended in a thread on the Vampi Soul label. I recently picked up another Vampi Soul disc from DG for $5.99 https://www.discogs.com/master/430576-Ruben-Lopez-Furst-Jazz-Argentino-En-La-Universidad and liked it so much that I resolved to buy Fetén in the next order, same vendor / price.
