Really enjoying this so far. Have some vague ideas, but #8's got to be early Hank with Horace and Blakey, maybe Hank's Prank. I know I have a recording, but not sure of album/take.
  2. Perusing this on bandcamp. Having recently acquired the excellent Alan Skidmore box, it definitely appeals. A sensational, previously unheard session by legendary British free jazz saxophonist Mike Osborne, recorded in December 1970 at London's famous 100 Club. From Osborne's personal tape collection. Features two compositions currently thought to be unrecorded in any other setting. Lineup: Mike Osborne - alto sax Alan Skidmore - tenor sax Harry Miller - double bass Louis Moholo - drums
  3. I think #6 sounds like McPherson (now that I've been told), but didn't recognize him in real time, which is my bad since I have and listen to some fairly recent recordings. Number 4 was an even worse miss; clearly Blue Note hard bop but I'd never heard it, my Hank '60s listening being confined to the Mosaic. Agreed I'll have to check out the album. Thanks for the BFT. I didn't chime in earlier because I didn't have anything bright to say re. IDing the tunes, but I enjoyed listening.

I'm not familiar with the anecdote, but it very likely refers to substance (ab)use IMO.
  6. Believe it or not, I've heard a boatload of her music. Live in a rural area, like to listen to radio while driving, but there are very few stations in my immediate area (have to drive a half hour to get within range of decent programming). One of the available stations plays her songs with astonishing frequency. There's worse stuff to listen to. Some lyrics come off as whiny / self-indulgent / narcissistic, but I don't suppose that's unusual (or ever has been within the "singer/songwriter" genre). As far as social trends, I dunno...I've been way out of touch with "pop culture", whatever that is, for decades. She seems to be making more money than God, so must be doing something right. 😄
  7. CD of this, Super Fuji FJSP-207, recently appeared at Cdjapan. Motivated me to put together an order.
  8. There have been a whole lot of Mingus reissues the past several years. Hasn't been easy to keep up, and non-completists have had to make decisions. Much of this set is music I have to get, but I haven't decided whether to spring for the box or selectively buy some key albums.
  9. Big on this box, strongly recommended. I really enjoy it, though to be honest I don't expect to listen to the interview disc again.
  10. Interesting that producer Michael D. Anderson is the same guy who's involved with the Sun Ra Music Archive and put this together:
  11. I noticed an upcoming reissue, was watching for release and listened to samples, but decided against it...matter of priorities as I've spent a lot of $ on recordings recently.

This is not particularly exotic, just straight-ahead jazz, but I think it's very good.
  13. I decided to take a (black) Sharpie* and write the disc number on the clear plastic ring in the center of each CD. *don't have any green Magic Markers...🤣
  14. Preordered in Feb., shipped today. 🤷
  15. Never heard of the group before, but saw an article in an e-zine and had to check them out due to the funny name.
  16. This one (Yamashita Trio + Schoof) got my attention, but not readily available so it's on the wish list.
  17. Don't know, but IMO highly probable that it's a Euro-PD label. Also possibly CD-R instead of CD, if that matters.
  18. I received it today, just cued up disc 4, enjoying it so far. Can't attest to stereo vs. mono, defer to the label. One peculiarity: the non-playing sides of the CDs are solid black, no printing whatsoever, thus no indication of the disc number (1-6). I use a CD changer, and this means I have to be particularly mindful of the order in which I insert and remove discs. 🧐
  19. I also like it. I sometimes attend concerts of Indian / Pakistani music, and these sitar / tabla players are seriously good.
  20. Bought this obscure disc because it was cheap, but it proved to be a sleeper and I really like it. Mix of piano trio and quintet (w. tenor, trumpet). Straight-ahead, he's obviously influenced by Bill Evans but for whatever reason it all works for me.
  21. Confident that I will, based on the samples I heard and the (almost shockingly, when I reviewed last night) many recordings I own and enjoy on which Skidmore plays!
