Dang, I recognized Santana but not Abraxas, which is one of the albums I'm most familiar with. I saw Bill Ware play live in fall of 2024. I got the impression he's currently NY based. Didn't know about the Philly background.

Hadn't listened to any Nimbus West recordings in a long while...enjoying these:
-
#6 is this cut. I have a studio version of this on the Straight Ahead album. As Jim noted, it's a Wes tune.

Thanks for presenting the BFT. I enjoyed listening to it. Couldn't guess much (if anything), and it was a busy work month so I didn't have time to post much. I'm somewhat of a Francophile when it comes to classical music, but hadn't heard #4 and couldn't muster a guess, though the actual composer was one of the main suspects that came to mind. #3 definitely worth the price of admission, and there are several others I intend to follow up on. Have heard loads of "Barbara Song"s on record recently (the tune seems to be popular with Euro jazz musicians), but wasn't familiar with the recording of #2.

Really enjoying this BFT so far, though I don't connect with a couple of things. I usually post in bits and pieces b/c I tend to mess up long posts and have them vanish into hyperspace. 🥴 I peeked at the thread, so won't drop names of things that have been ID'd. Love #2, the pianist is also a big favorite of mine. Wasn't familiar with this recording. Saxist plays more notes than I generally prefer, but the package works. Of course #5 is Santana. I never heard this tune, or maybe I did once but forgot. Always enjoy his music when I hear it, though I have to admit I no longer own any recordings. #6 has gotta be Brian Auger? At least I think so. I don't have any of his live recordings but the tune is very familiar. I may have a studio version (which I enjoy) on the shelves somewhere. Have to do some detective work. Looking forward to hearing more of the BFT.

It's good, but different. I bought it expecting something like his earlier free material. It isn't really free, and is eclectic and relatively quiet. Some excellent playing and arrangements by Tyler. Some vocals that also were unexpected. I recommend with the proviso that it's not like the earlier free jazz dates. You can audition it on Youtube. I also have this, which is good and more in the free mold:

I have that one but haven't listened in a long time. I'll give it a spin.

I prefer HIP and like the Mosaïques, so nothing new to suggest. If you do downloads, the Festetics complete set (first one using HIP) DL is available cheaply. I've seen it at Presto, for instance. Also on streaming outlets. On the negative side, I've never been fond of "The Lindsays" due to bad intonation (although their playing has a certain intensity and spirit). My first hearing of Seven Last Words was their recording, which nearly put me off the work entirely. Culled it straightaway.

Nice find! That Bangalore album has been on my discogs wish list, but I haven't been keeping up. No doubt you got DG's only copy. 😁

"The Greatest Jazz Piano Albums of All Time" & My Favorites
T.D. replied to HutchFan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm not sufficiently erudite to post lists, but some other names I'd consider are: Muhal Richard Abrams Sonny Clark Gene Harris (not the first name that comes to mind, but his Maybeck solo album is great and displays serious chops) Elmo Hope (!!) Masabumi Kikuchi Tete Montoliu Sun Ra Howard Riley Horace Tapscott John Taylor I think your list is excellent, though. -
What Classical Music Are You Listening To?

Not to be a shill*, but Dusty Groove has a bunch of Black Jazz titles (far more than on the Real Gone site) @ $6.99. Extra two bucks but more options. Check "CD Deals" on their site. *I am a frequent customer of DG but have no relationship to them.

I had no idea the 1982 recording was "in a legal limbo". Definitely worth hearing. It is on Youtube. I bought the Enja 2-CD set several years ago and there was no scarcity premium; discogs currently has it as low as US$10 + shipping, (which might not help you in Canada, of course). I'll try to listen to the forthcoming BBC release, but it'll have to be really good to merit a purchase. Thanks for posting.

Mavericks GM Fired After 3-8 Start, Fan Uproar Over Doncic Trade In the "I'm shocked!!!..." category. 😁 No link...I saw the story on Bloomberg, which probably has a paywall, but it'll be on every sports site.

Ian Carr's Miles Davis
T.D. replied to GA Russell's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
That's long been rumored and I think it's plausible. I read Davis/Troupe first, then Chambers. Yeah, Troupe is the guy who should take the rap for any plagiarism, sloppiness, etc. -

I've been waiting in vain for decades, but the long hoped for classical album Iannis Xenakis for Lovers has never appeared. 😭

Damn, that's right about the 15th, thanks for the reminder. I overlooked the Ted Daniel event. But the Lace Mill is half the travel, so that's probably what I'll go for. -

Thanks. Wow, that was recorded in 2019, released in 2020 and AFAICT (admittedly via Wikipedia) is Carla Bley's last recording. -

Based on the foregoing posts, I'll venture that my first thought for the #5 vocalist was Rickie Lee Jones. It does kinda sound like her IMO (I was a fan of her first couple of albums, but then lost track). I dismissed that as unlikely and resolved to listen further. Busy weekend so haven't gotten around to it yet.
