  1. Doesn't this happen every year (or very nearly so)? I always assumed the risk is part of the reason for daring to make the run.
  2. Going back to the original video,
  3. No doubt. But my experience in the Northeast is that fans get tanked up before the game. I went to the first Yankees-Mariners playoff game in 1995. Taking a pregame walk down River Ave., I was terrified by the immense number of obvious drunks walking around. And the game featured constant fan fights popping up, not just in the stands but in the walkways leading to concession stands and restrooms. At a NY football Giants game, when entering the stadium I passed by a monstrous dumpster into which fans were tossing their last pregame beer bottles. Every gate had one. It was a little unnerving to contemplate the number of inebriates at the game.
  4. Whew. Makes me happy that I no longer (a) drink; (b) attend sports events. Off-topic, but I couldn't help noticing a distinct lack of slender people in the video. No doubt a lotta heavy beer drinkers.
  5. Thanks! Will look for download tomorrow. I take it Part II doesn't require the original Stealth Jazz as prerequisite?
  6. Yes, this is outstanding and beautifully produced.
  7. On the subject of "warts and all" portrayals, Donald Maggin's bio of Stan Getz might be of interest. Plenty of warts on view; I didn't know that much about Getz before reading and was quite shocked. Overall probably not at the same high level as other recommendations on this thread, however.
  8. Straight Life by Art Pepper, Raise up off me by Hampton Hawes. Both "warts and all" autobiographies which address addiction issues. Don't know about e-book availability. The Monk biography by Kelley is excellent. Isoardi's bio of Horace Tapscott, The Dark Tree - if you can find it. I enjoyed John Szwed's biography of Sun Ra, Space is the Place. Szwed's work impressed me, and I expect any of his writing on subjects of interest would be worthwhile.
  9. Starting with the early ones, discs 1-3.
  10. Used CDs from a brick/mortar shop yesterday:
  11. I just pre-ordered on Monday, very generous offer via the link.
  12. Thanks, interesting story. I occasionally drive by the Iron Mountain facility in Rosendale, NY (Sony archives per story). But of course they'd never let me in to peruse the vaults.
  13. Just noticed that Valerij put this up on eBay, so went for it.
  14. "Woodstock 50" looking increasingly shaky: Troubled Woodstock 50 festival will need a new location
  15. https://www.saratoga.com/summer/jazz-festival/ Heard a radio commercial and was unimpressed, but there are some interesting performers. Couldn't help noticing "Django Festival All-Stars with special guests Edmar Castañeda & Grace Kelly" and "Allison Miller Boom Tic Boom", a couple of preferred acts on this forum.
  16. There's always Sorabji, about whom opinions vary widely but whose music I've enjoyed in limited hearings. Strongly agreed on Hindemith. Nancarrow's Three Canons for Ursula (for regular piano) is interesting. Rodion Shchedrin is an excellent pianist as well as composer; he wrote a Polyphonic Notebook and a set of 24 Preludes and Fugues. I like his music but some dislike his politics (rather cozy with the Kremlin in the USSR era). In the composer/pianist category, is Busoni's Fantasia contrappuntistica too old to count? Busoni's music definitely deserves attention. Funny thing about the Shostakovich P&F: I enjoy them, but in the old days when I used to read rec.music.classical.recordings, a number of the Usenet savants regarded them as practically pianistic doggerel. But I suspect many of said savants also waxed enthusiastic about Joyce Hatto's pianism (I'd given up Usenet by the time that hoax was exposed).

  18. Thanks for the comments! A while back, I read an article (forget where) that discussed The Man Without Qualities and thought I might enjoy the novel. Then I perused a used copy of Vol. 1 in a bookshop and held off because it looked like very tough sledding. Will definitely skip it now.
