I thought we had a good discussion about Huss Charles last year... And I also liked the detective work around the second tenor player or about what went wrong with the licencing of Palo Alto... Those discussions were not off topic when they happened... And I do think that these problems happen a bit too often to this particular producer - then again, he's quite productive ... Be all that as it may, what I wanted to say is this: a dedicated thread for negativity about Zev Feldman would not solve any problems, it might even create new ones.
-
The outsized ego might or might not deserve a separate thread but the QC issues like Denis Charles last year or the uncredited tenor player the year before are still best discussed in connection with the releases to which they belong...
-
No worries, even though I am in the mood for a new Dolphy release...
-
Which new release? (Fully agree with the first sentence)

Noodling is also quite specifically what jazz sounds like to those who don't get it - either temporarily or just in general... When people don't get Terry Riley or Wagner or Death Metal, they probably don't talk about noodling... Be all that as it may, what matters is that we don't lose further members to stupid discussions that got harsh just out of nothing

Now that is a bottle that gets my attention... Know the beer well from the small bottles but never saw the big ones, it looks beautiful... (Musically, that Joe Henderson is a bit closer to home though, a long time favorite)

I'll prefer an orchestra over a quartet that's being called a trio any time... Now playing, one of today's finds:

thanks for sharing! -
I have the limited edition of Lester Young Vol 1, the number is somewhere in the 1200s iirc... good to know it also exists in an unlimited version in case I lose it

I remember when the entire series was on display at the big Saturn store in Cologne, as a group they actually looked kind of nice... that label made some pretty weird choices for cover art... here's more (often you need to click on the record to find the cover in this design) https://www.discogs.com/label/59478-Jazz-View

That CD is an exact copy of Ambrosia 010 I believe... One big plus of those Ambrosia LPs is that on the back cover there is a nice overview of the contents of about 20 different bootleg LPs of this type (Ambrosia, Session Disc, CP records, ESP Disk, Session Disc, Queen Disc etc etc). Unfortunately, that list does not come with lineups... So those must have been added later and with possible mistakes

That was one of my very first CDs as a kid 30 years ago, back then I didn't get it... But following our recent discussion, I bought a handful of those Boris Rose LPs and it didn't set me back by much (except shelf space)
-
Thanks! Will stick to my Ambrosia LPs then...

Brownie's photos are here https://www.ayler.co.uk/html/judsonhall.html The photographer in the pictures is W Eugene Smith whose pictures from the session could include brownie but I don't think such pictures are known...

Yes, he did, I've bought quite a few albums with him in recent years, often because of him, and many were excellent... RIP

Just play the first seconds of "My name is Albert Ayler"...

Bob Crosby Mosaic Mentioned on Jazz Messengers
Niko replied to colinmce's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Fwiw, Steinmann mentions that such a set is in the works and that he's kind of involved here https://jazzlives.wordpress.com/2025/02/04/a-swing-concert-for-joe-sullivan-april-18-1937-congress-hotel-chicago/ -
Hampton Hawes with Denny Diaz, Sonship Theus and an unidentified bass player...

Frank Sinatra - In The Wee Small Hours LP (Tone Poet Vinyl Edition)
Niko replied to dougcrates's topic in Re-issues
Indeed, I got my first Tonepoet recently (Picture of Heath) and while a lot of it sounded great, there were those spots that taught me that I better stick to old-time vinyl until the next major upgrade of my system which is not planned for the foreseeable future... -
Yes... Vinyl24 and Plaatboef are super close to each other on Oude Gracht and both worth a visit (we combined it with visits to Nijntje Museum or Speelklok Museum which are close...). Plaatboef is similar to their shop in Rotterdam, not spectacular but very decent (think of Recordmania maybe), Vinyl24 is a strange one, compared to 10 weeks ago, they had sold most of their stuff and replaced it, it's mostly priced to go... You can follow them on insta and see what their recent acquisitions are... The Hines was from Dig It, in a different part of the city center, it's a small store but I found cool stuff at great prices like this and the Asch Recordings of Mary Lou Williams .... Will go again....
-
No, that was Mary Lois... that Msc thesis is really quite amazing in its comprehensiveness, making it, e.g., quite clear that Ellen Brooks was neither the one who shot him nor the trigger for Mary Lois shooting him

The beer I know very well, one of the most easily drinkable Belgian style tripels but I do admire the glass.... One of the results of going to Utrecht with my daughter today and sneaking in some time for record shopping...

I've been buying loads of Hampton Hawes in the last few days (At the piano, Art Farmer's On the road, Art Pepper's Early Show, Dexter Gordon's Blues a la Suisse) and replayed what's in my collection.... that one is still missing...
