  1. Thanks. Missed it the first time around. Was hoping for a laugh today :-)

    jackie mills rip

He played good drums on some jam session concerts that appeared on Crown Records in the early 1960s. I enjoyed those.

    Henry Red Allen

He wrote a blues that goes chromatically down from 5 to 1 six times with a one note variation the fifth time. Anyone know what the tune is called?
  4. He was my Jr High music teacher and a hell of a trumpet player. with Charlie Barnet, Prez Prado, Rene Bloch, etc. Jay Corre told me Marvin was the most natural jazz player he every knew. I would like to know more about him.

    Jo Stafford

Yes they were married. The parody records were made using the names Jonathan and Darlene Edwards and in my opinion they are worth having because they are funny. It is fun to play them at a party when nobody knows what they are listening to.

    Chico Hamilton

Interesting. Another trivia category. Alan Arkin's brother is bass player Bob Arkin. Yes, on "The Dealer" Shepp plays piano on his tune which he brought to the session. Just that tune.

Albert Stinson plays bass on "The Dealer".

    Sonny Cox

That makes nine in my trivia list of sax players who's first name is Sonny. Hidden answers. Run the mouse over (copy) to see them. Rollins, Stitt, Lewis, Simmons, Fortune, King, Redd or Red, Criss, Cox
  9. funny
  10. He's just a troll.
  11. probably with a 1 at the end :-) Stéphane Grappelli used to drive me crazy with his octave harmonics at the end of a phrase. Apparently I was not the only one because he stopped doing it so often near the end of his career.
  12. This record is in a class by itself. It is not representative of his general releases. You don't need to notate. Just give the notes. For instance, sometimes he plays 8 6 -3 3 1 :-)
  13. Chewy (and other collectors) - a recommendation Pete Fountain Day! I so much wish this record was available on CD. There was more music recorded that day. It is in a university library in Louisiana. The CD would be great. It is the best JAZZ record Pete Fountain ever released. The concert date was October 24, 1959. Coral records CRL 57313 Pete Fountain, clarinet Godfrey Hirsch, vibes Merle Koch, piano Don Bagley, bass Jack Sperling, drums When I was a kid learning to be a jazz clarinet player (1960) I had at least 14 Pete Fountain records. I still believe this is his best jazz record. Why it was never released on CD? If I ever have the chance to speak to Mr Fountain about this, I will. The music is similar to a Benny Goodman quintet of 1958 (except much more drive than Benny at that time). Of special interest is the wonderful drumming of Jack Sperling, one of my favorite drummers. Notice how he shifts the "set" and the way he plays time behind each soloist. His own solos are very technical, swinging, interesting and fairly unique. You should have some Merle Koch in your collection! Don Bagley is perfect and plays GOOD solos. It was my turn to be passionate (without the caps) :-)
  14. "his solo on the Ellington Jazz Party album blows my mind." Yes! That's most of what I have knowingly heard. He worked with many singers. "I have a special regard for his contributions to some of the best Sonny Stitt recordings: 'New York Jazz', 'A Little Bit of Stitt', 'Stittsville'..." I used to love Stittsville and often played along with it when I was young. I often wondered who was playing with him. :-)

    Harry Carney

A friend of mine, Maarten Stuurman, has Harry Carney's "Frustration" piece memorized. He plays it on bari.

    Louis Armstrong

    Yeah, ain't that somethin'?
  19. That pic is how he looked when I heard him at the BimHuis in the late 1980s. He played very good. Edit: Looking at the photographer's name, the pic may have been shot at the concert I went to.

    Mal Waldron

Hello, The Magnificent Goldberg, You don't have the Five Spot recordings with Dolphy and Little?
  21. Thanks. Drummers: during Billy's solo you can watch his left hand.

    KD ON Tenor

I have been aware that KD started on tenor but have never found any recordings to check that out. There are recordings of him singing I believe. I don't know of any recordings of Jimmy Hamilton playing trumpet either. or of Lester Young's sister playing sax. or of Bird playing clarinet. etc...
  23. An interesting test case for the song title :-)
  24. Sure makes you want to dance. (I left a comment)
